The stranger has heard him. For a second, Cyrus is torn between backing down and doubling down on it, but, when she speaks, she just seems to clarify. It doesn’t help much, and he hesitates, finally giving in after a long minute. “Right.”

At the question, something in between a grimace and an awkward smile stretches across his face. It’s mostly more a grimace, he’s sure, before he’s side stepping to allow her a good view into what’s meant to be his room. “See for yourself?”

The larger Pokemon seemed as excited to be around Cyrus as he was to be around it, responding to his glance with…some sort of noise. It takes everything in him not to shudder at the noise- and, as it is, he double checks to make sure there’s more than enough room between them in case the Pokemon decides to suddenly lunge. The other Pokemon seem happy enough, though, even if he doesn’t move to greet them in any way. Or trust them, really.

The ranger he was hired to help was the ranger here? He’d have to keep note of that for the near future- knowing who was where would help him somehow, he’s sure. “It’s nice to meet you.” His attention flicks towards the Pokemon, then, and there’s no lack of hesitation in his voice when he speaks again. “And your Pokemon.”

At the question, he near-freezes. “It, uh-” He stammers, feeling his face flush before he forces the words out. “I don’t really believe in having Pokemon.” It’s a simple enough answer for now, and it means he doesn’t have to get into the specifics of it- that he’s sure Pokemon really hate it, from stories he’s heard from his parents.

cyrus thinks literally anyone else would have been better for this job than he is. he hadn't even really wanted to do it, but it offered pay, and until he could get on his feet, there wasn't much he could do about it. if it hadn't been for the disappearances he had been filled in on (in passing), he wouldn't have had to do this in the first place.

but here he was, hurrying his way to the meeting spot. it's only when he gets close enough that he slows his pace, trying not to seem as rushed as he actually had been. the pokemon beside the help he was hired to go with are given a side-eye, and, before he can think twice about it, a wide berth.

"sorry i'm late." he starts, keeping an eye on the pokemon from the corner of his vision. "there was a delay with the train, so i had to wait." but surely it wasn't that big of an issue, was it? if he had been really late, surely his help would have left by now.

okay, so...he has to do something, right? cyrus really wants to sleep, and preferably without the caterpie crawling all over him some night. it just comes to mind of some story his parents told him- of how a spider pokemon, upset at being raised as a captive all its life, had finally snapped and wrapped its trainer in a tightly-sealed cocoon...

the sound of footsteps breaks him from imagining his likely caterpie-related doom, and he turns his head, probably looking the equivalent of a kicked dog. at first, his attention lands on the pokemon following behind, and his brain blanks. the reasonable thing would be to assume that it's the person's pokemon, but, with a hoard of caterpie, it's hard to be reasonable.

there's also the fact that, on some level, he can't wrap his head around the alternative.

"not another one." it's a barely-audible grumble, mostly for himself, as he frowns at the little flower pokemon. and then at the ranger- he's pretty sure those are ranger colors?- that's not very far from the flower pokemon.

he doesn't mean to be grouchy (this time), but any alternative to the caterpie infestation involves finding another apartment, and he's pretty sure there's probably some legal issues that would come from that. considering he signed the lease and all already.

cyrus hadn't been expecting a welcoming committee to hoenn or anything, but what he had been expecting was for his apartment complex to not be run over with bug pokemon.

the travel hadn't been difficult, but it had been long, and he felt dead on his feet as he hauled his last bag just outside of his room. the pokemon were completely ignored, outside of cyrus' attempts to not step on one of the caterpie that had seemed to gather in the hallway. it felt like he was in some ultra-complicated dance routine; sidestep one, sidestep five hundred.

a few awkward half-steps later, and he had made it to his door. there was a sense of relief as he reached for the keys, prepared to sleep for the rest of the year, and swung the door open-

just to completely pause. and blink a few times.

somehow, through some miracle or something determined to spite him specifically, there were caterpie in his room. seven, actually. the logistics of it don't make much sense to him- someone had to leave a window open or something- but that is, for now, the least of his worries.
