for someone who had come into this a skeptic, there's a certain sense of dread that sinks into kasper's stomach and confirms they won't be walking out of this one. if they walk out of here at all. one of the fenelles- they've long since given up on trying to label which one- agrees, and they start to open their mouth, to figure out anything that would confirm they're real.

and then the light above them flickers, brightly, and kasper doesn't have to. they squint against the sudden lighting change, but even then, they can see the differences. the fenelle that had spoken, the one with der chilling smile, didn't seem to look right in the lighting- and neither did their own doppelganger, suddenly, face distorting into a snarl that makes them feel suddenly almost powerless, sure they're not getting out of this that easily.

it's gone just as quickly, then, and their- it's- voice keeps that awful, casual tone, like it's just making conversation. "y'know, i would have thought you'd bring our brother. he loves this stuff, doesn't he?" this time, they don't think it's fear that causes them to freeze, their breath catching awkwardly, heavily, in their throat. "where is he, kas?"

their hand brushes against the pokeball to release the tyranitar almost instinctively, and even the larger pokemon between them hesitates, torn between the shaken look of his trainer and the lookalike he's standing in front of. "use- bite. or something. please."

okay. so there were no real witnesses. kasper could...work with that, maybe. if they felt like lying to themself about it. their only chance was a pokemon that was long gone- and, from the marks, it had either been picked up or the pokeball was stolen.

or it had done this. kasper wasn't sure how, but in the face of a mystery murder, they weren't about to ignore any potential, and the lack of marks could mean it flew. or would there be marks? that didn't explain the lack of anything fire-related, either, but it wasn't like they had been part of a crime scene before.

"okay. um." they try to wrap their mind around some explanation, but the most that comes is their mind blanking for a second. "do we know if he had the pokeball with him? for his partner pokemon?" maybe, if it wasn't gone or destroyed, it could give them something to work with? they weren't sure what, exactly, but they could play it by ear.

and if it was....they were probably just fucked, to be honest. kasper wasn't meant to be a detective.

kasper was not a detective. in fact, most of what they knew came from shitty detective shows back when they were thirteen, and after seven years and the obvious gap in reality it was clear they wouldn't work the same way.

they did know that they had to get the facts in order, even if said facts started and stopped at i'm standing in front of a dead body. there's a sort of numb realization to it, like it hasn't entirely sunk in and they're waiting for the man in front of them to cough and sit up.

"not at all. i haven't even seen- this. before." it feels weird, referring to the guard like that, but referring to him any other way feels no better. they pause, trying to get their thoughts together, even if they're certain this is a sink or swim scenario where they'll undeniably sink.

"there has to be a witness, right? someone who saw something? heard something?" that was how these things worked, right? it all seemed too perfect otherwise.

if kasper hadn't been sitting against their door, they may have winced a little with the pokeball snatched out of their hand. as it is, they do drop their gaze, as if hoping their phone would light up or somehow teleport them away from their (honestly terrifying as fuck) superior.

it maybe gives them a little confidence- or not, honestly, considering they're a rambler- to not shut up despite the look that would have killed if cillian had been capable of it. "yeah. that."

at least, this time, they know better not to continue, and keep their head down, trying to figure out the logistics of texting death threats to someone while his weird monster husband was right there. probably not a good idea, but it was tempting.

their rescue- or not- comes in the form of the lycanroc being released. immediately, he wheels around, with the beginning of a snarl- just to stop, like nothing had ever happened. or maybe, like kasper, he was absolutely terrified of the man in front of him.

there's something odd, kasper thinks, about the fenelle standing near their own doppelganger. der smile is too wide, or too sharp, or- something. a tiny part of kasper can't help but be put in mind of some sort of predatory, hunting pokemon given human flesh. is it even human flesh?

the other fenelle interrupts, claiming they're doppelgangers, and if it weren't for the fact that they were staring down a version of themself, kasper would have laughed. their own doppelganger has a mirror, distorted and twisted somehow, of their own expression, like it would laugh if it wasn't too afraid. "we have to get rid of them, then, right?" it starts, and it's more than enough to send kasper into action.

"no. no. i'm not-" they don't know what they're not doing, but they do know they're half-looking for a way to escape as they reach for a pokeball. they trust carnation- the tyranitar can shield them, should something happen, and fenelle-

they don't really have any confidence in which fenelle is the real one. they have hope, and a belief that it's probably not the one with the twisted voice and the chilling smile, but even then there's a whisper of doubt in the back of their mind, and they really, really don't want to know what happens if they get this wrong and end up trapped with two doppelgangers on their own.

there's a moment where kasper can almost see the gears turning in fenelle's mind before it clicks for dem. and- yeah, maybe if it had been someone else, they would have almost been embarrassed being caught making scones. but there's baker solidarity there, and even if kasper doesn't know dem, it's more than enough to stop that.

"it was a cafe. in sootopolis." if there had been a question brewing of what had happened, or if kasper had been fired, they're sure it's answered just as quickly. "i can make coffee, too, but- i liked baking more. like baking more." because, even now, a part of them wants to wither and die at the memory of being forced to deal with brewing coffee in the middle of an early morning rush. at least they'd had some excuse with baking.

they shouldn't be surprised at the question. they're really not, truth be told, but something about it causes them to falter. "yeah! of course." and then, just as easily as breathing, kasper offers another baker-exclusive show of solidarity. "i can send the recipe to you later, too, if you want?"

the stranger, as they come closer, is familiar- the voice is not. kasper doesn't know the other rocket well, beyond the few times they've stumbled across each other, but they know enough to know that the voice is strange. too robotic for someone who, as kasper squints at dem, appears to not be holding anything to excuse it.

"hey?" they're sure the confusion in their voice is obvious- and, had they seen the real version of who was approaching, it may have come off a bit more like alarm. as it is, any tension leaves them- just for a second, because something else moves, just behind not-fenelle. and while their flashlight beam is weak, and the thing is moving too fast, kasper thinks they can make out the flash of a pink jacket.

their pink jacket, actually- signature stitched tear on the sleeve and all. if there had been any idea that it was just coincidence, that undid it. "what the fuck?"

instinctively, they swing their flashlight up, shining the beam into their face. or...not-their face? either way, the thing staring back at them is the same, save for the way they know their face is paling in the wake of this actually being real.

frozen in place, they can only glance to what they think is fenelle for some sort of help- just to barely catch sight of the real dem, standing just between them and their doppelgangers.

kasper still wasn't really sure how to handle shadow pokemon. or a shadow pokemon, if they were being honest. their pokemon-rtraining skills were maybe not up to par in comparison, and the aggression of the dog pokemon only made things worse.

so maybe this was a mistake. but they had decided there was nothing better than trying to forge a bond (bridge) with the shadow pokemon. and what better to do that than to bring him with them?

except....yeah. they hadn't expected this many people (more than one), and the lycanroc stayed where he was in his pokeball. since they were here, though, they may as well try to catch something.

as soon as the words are out of her mouth, a part of dandelion expects to defend herself and how the berries help. she starts to speak, to explain her reasoning- and then gets a good look at the fomantis. her newfound companion seems like she's in disbelief, sure, but it seems more genuine surprise than skepticism.

it leaves the eevee a little unsure of what to say, herself. anything she had planned to say fizzles and dies in the back of her mind, and she closes her jaws at how the fomantis admits she hasn't tried it. "i'm sure that's your problem, then." she says, instead, with a confidence she should not have.

the fomantis, with this potential solution, seems just as determined to try it as dandelion is that it'll work. and maybe, both because someone believes her and there's the chance of getting extra berries, there's a hint of a skip in dandelion's step as she falls in line next to the other pokemon at her invitation, no questions asked.

the elevator doors slide open, and- kasper is pretty sure they've never seen this man in their life, but they don't give it a second thought. he's probably some neighbor that's either just moved in or that has had a conflicting schedule up until now. it's fine. they return their attention back to their phone, just for a second-

until he stops. and when kasper looks up this time, they freeze. the man is not just a neighbor, and apparently not even real, because in his place stands one of their higher ups, just as intimidating as ever. the game on their phone, gone completely ignored now, makes a little sad noise as their character plummets to their death.

"uh." clever response aside, they pluck the pokeball from where it was resting and offer it to their superior. "be careful. he's kind of-" they gesture, vaguely, still feeling like they're waiting for their life to flash before their eyes. wait. fuck. had even mentioning the shadow pokemon's temperament come off as some sort of insult?

looking for some sort of savior, it comes in the form of their phone, just for a second, and the way they angle it so that cillian can't see the way they start composing a text of what the fuck you're actually the worst to Tempest Quinn. it's left unsent, though.

the other rocket doesn't tell kasper to fuck off, and, even better, dee seems to be willing to make room for their scones. and maybe help- they can only assume (or hope) that it's part of why they don't immediately start packing their stuff up to leave.

with the empty silence, kasper starts piling ingredients for scones onto the counter, only pausing when they realize that it's probably less of an answer than what was expected. a sheepish wince crosses their face, just for a second, as they take it all in and realize- yeah. this could have been anything.

"scones." they start, with a tap of the fillings they'd bought. "i used to make them for my old job, and they were- really good. i sort of got tired of them at the end, but." they shrug, as if that's that, unwilling to mention the fact that it was only their old job because kyogre had shown up in sootopolis and completely fucked everything up.

the movement from the other rocket makes them glance up, just in time to see big words flash across the rotom's screen. "i'm kasper." they feel almost awkward, then, with their own lack of cool nicknames.
