the eevee doesn't seem to see anything wrong with amaryllis' behavior, instead just batting back in return. kasper turns their attention away just before their audino looks up with big, pleading eyes, although they can see the way he watches them from the corner of their own. in return, before they can think twice about it, they give him a halfhearted can't do shit, dude, sorry sort of shrug. he had picked this battle, and he was going to have to see it through.

much like kasper was going to have to deal with their own battle. even if they wouldn't have picked it in a million years.

"you don't think going into their territory would give them a reason to attack, do you?" and, more concerningly- was it just them, or was the air around them already cold? cassidy doesn't seem bothered by it, and, as they turn on their own flashlight, they manage to muster a weak smile.

gym challenge: quick badge

even with the way carnation's teeth land on the side of the luxray's face, it looks rough. kasper was the one who had ordered the move, and already they almost feel bad for the lion pokemon. almost. from what they can tell, blitz seems almost unbothered, and the gym leader himself doesn't look angry at suffering such a blow early on.

the order for the luxray is given, and, even though carnation is quick to release the lion pokemon and begin to back off, it isn't fast enough. this time, kasper does wince. it hadn't loked pretty, and, even after it settles, they can tell it's done more than just rattle carnation.

"use payback." the time it takes for the ground type to react is, they fear, a bit too slow- they think they had underestimated the speed of the electric types they were battling. regardless, carnation throws himself back into the battle with only a slight pause to really recover.

even if they lost, they'd have to tell him that he did good after this. maybe go out to get a treat, if they all felt like it.

if kasper's already been marked as a lost cause, they can't tell- which, considering the way the conversation has been going, is probably the point. instead, the older rocket turns away, and they're left tapping their side as a silent order for their pokemon to follow before they're scrambling after her, themself.

it seems like a lot. they're not sure they're as good of an actor as ameena seems to think they could be, but they think they will be. they think they want to be, eventually, if things work out like that.

when she offers her rotom information, they're quick to pull out their rotom and note it down. the more stubborn part of them thinks that they'd rather not have to ask for help, even if they're not doing this alone, but they know they'll have to. so they swallow down the shreds of their pride and- unconsciously- stand a little straighter.

"where do you think a good place to start would be?" because, from what they can tell, a nineteen year old befriending a bunch of middle-aged league members would be awkward unprompted. or close to middle age? who knew. kasper wasn't keeping track of the ages of league members.

by the time kasper had dragged themself away from the battle with the golurk, feeling like they were going to have sand in their hair for the next month, they almost didn't see it at first. mostly because they weren't thinking to look.

"you're kidding." but a look around confirms that no, nobody'ds kidding, and yes, that is registeel. as in...the registeel. they think they should say something as they fumble for a pokeball, but the first words that come from them isn't the heroic thing they were hoping for. "i have an opening shift tomorrow, asshole."

the glowing light isn't anything kasper is used to, but they can make out some of what the others are saying. "it's something about steel, right?" they hope the fact that they've blatantly stolen the answer isn't obvious. just in case it is, they release the sylveon anyway.

"shield the cradlily." and, immediately, yarrow is bounding over to shield the closest cradlily- Cillian Quinn's- with a draining kiss.

the golurk seems tired- they hope- even with the sudden beam of light that comes from the pokemon's chest. between the sandstorm and the sudden light, it's almost impossible to see what's going on. they can't see if hambone had impacted the pokemon in anyway, but from the way temp calls out, he doesn't seem particuarly upset, so they'll have to take that as a good sign in itself.

they'll also just have to take his word for it when he says he can see the golurk cracking. "rock tomb!" they can't quite see where hambone is, but, even through everything, they think they can just barely make out the shape of a rock directed toward the golurk.

kasper wasn't epecting baking club to be a thing. not an actual thing, anyway. when the flyer had been slid under their door, they had spent a few minutes just staring at it, trying to piece together what the actual hell it was.

and then, despite everything telling them it was some joke, they made their way to the kitchen- just to stop, because there are people already there. not many, but enough to confirm that- somehow- this isn't a joke. or it is and all of them fell for it hook, line, and sinker.

regardless, they're already here. kasper puts on their best customer service face- which, even with their surprise, probably looks better than expected- and steps further into the kitchen, effectively dooming themself to a life of going to a baking club of all things.

so far, the fact that they're bullshitting their way through this whole thing hasn't been called out, so kasper will take that as a win. looking like the equivalent of those nonbinary barista jokes probably didn't hurt. maybe their pride- because the thought comes with an oh fuck am i a walking stereotype sort of sinking feeling- but nobody would look at them and think they were with rocket.

carnation keeps his jaws locked on the gengar, and kasper doesn't really have a chance to question how that really happens before the ghost type is teleported away. with one threat out of the way, they're left with the other, more terrifying, one. their hand rests on carnation's side, both as a halfhearted pat to the tyranitar and to gather their nerves.

"um. not really?" there's their father, of course, but kasper doesn't like thinking about him. "i mean...i could? probably? i doubt it'd be that hard." they're sure some members of the league probably stop by their cafe. they could start from there, maybe? work their way up?

the golurk slams its fists into the ground again, glowing with energy, and kasper sees the opportunity, as much as they hate it. they should just let someone else do it, they think, because there's no way they see this going well. at the same time, however, the idea of disappointing rocket- especially when one of them has literal actual claws- is scarier than the outcome of whatever would happen.

there's a sandstorm already starting up, which helps a little. it makes them feel less like their death is coming from either side, anyway- not much, but enough that they make up their mind. "back me up?" it's mostly directed toward anyone who won't ask why the hell a grunt is asking- if any of them won't- and they can't really wait to make sure.

"hambone- rock slide. go for the shoulders." and as the lycanroc takes off, kasper finds themself silently repeating a mantra of please don't die i think temp would kill me and i'd deserve it.

when kasper first hears about the swarm, they're tempted to just let it be. but then they decide fuck it, just as quickly, and make their way to the route.

by the time they actually make it, they would have thought it to be storming, if not for the clear blue sky overhead. the crackle of electricity seems to be a warning from one pokemon to another- or them, if they're really unlucky- but they don't think twice about throwing a pokeball towards the group.

they knocked it down. they knocked it down? for a second, kasper hopes that, somehow, that'll be it. they really hope it doesn't get back up. they really-

it gets back up, slamming its arms into the ground. the shockwaves are bad enough, but the ground itself splits. trying to keep from falling- and only vaguely succeeding, because they feel like they're being shaken around like a ragdoll- they try to focus on stabilizing the ground, as much as that comes second to not dying.

the best they can think of is stopping the shaking at its source. reaching blindly for the tera orb they had been given, they squint against it and the gleam of crystals as hambone terastallizes into the rock type.

"stone edge!" and because hambone is a good boy, and willing to go with kasper ony trying to survive, a sharp stone is aimed at one of the golurk's arms.

with the first order of their pokemon, kasper looks to temp, expecting some sort of reaction- and getting nothing beyond an eyebrow raise. somehow, that's almost worse than the beast's confidence that they're going to lose, because at least there isn't so much resting on them with that.

when he whistles, the eevee with him seems to do a complete 180 from something relaxed to something they have no doubt would rip their arm off. for the second time in the hour, kasper's thoughts circle back around to oh shit.

it's all they can really think before amaryllis bounces harmlessly off the eevee, who doesn't seem impacted at all as she lunges forward with a dragon hammer. their audino doesn't seem to have the chance to dodge at all, and it slams into him, sending him tumbling. kasper hisses, a noise between their teeth, but the audino is already getting back up.

they think they see the way he's getting ready to retreat before temp does- the little pink pokemon obviously looks trapped- and they're calling to him before he even has the chance. "double edge."

they're almost surprised when amaryllis listens. they're even more surprised when he seems to shake himself off and charge into the battle again. maybe he knows how much this means to them, too.
