Tempest flipped the tracker closed, slipping it back into his pocket. The hot sun beat down on them, making beads of sweat linger on the back of his neck. The sand whipped around them, harsh enough to be annoying but not enough to sting the skin. He adjusted his goggles again, fidgeting for what seemed like the hundredth time, not liking the pressure it put on his face. (The alternative to sand in his eyes was worse.)[break][break]

He glanced back at Lulu Flint and kasper thaler, then winked at Cillian Quinn before turning back to face ahead of them.[break][break]

Giants in the desert? It reminded him of the Galar Memory. This promised bad tidings for the future.

to say kasper was scared shitless would be an understatement. and it wasn't even because of the giants they'd potentially be facing- although, admittedly, those played a role in things.

right now, though, with the giants absent, they were more scared of the other rocket members than anything. or maybe nervous was a better word? intimidated?

a glance at one of them- cillian- and his shadowy claws confirms that, yes, they're all terrifying, actually. tempest doesn't seem bothered, and neither does lulu, but it leaves kasper feeling like they're themost normal person in the entire group. however long that would last.

"so," they start, "remind me of the plan, again?" it's directed mostly towards temp, because they've at least talked to him before- and they think he'd be a little more likely to understand that they're mostly asking so they're not the one that blatantly fucks this up.

The chatter is nice. He wonders if Cillian Quinn and Lulu Flint would want to eat somewhere together when this is all over. If kasper thaler does well, Temp might even invite them.[break][break]

Nodding to Cillian, Temp glances out over the horizon.[break][break]

"We're just scouting. These things are supposed to be powerful, so none of us needed to come alo- woah!"[break][break]

The sand shifts in front of them, a massive form rising. The Golurk rumbles with malicious intent, ancient clicking and beeping as it scans them. There is a flash of red from one of it's eyes, a signal to attack, and Tempest curses softly.[break][break]

"Well, new plan! Kick it's ass!" It's still pushing itself out of the earth, but a massive hand slams the ground nearby and almost crushes Tempest. He yelps but dodges out of the way, flinging a pokeball as he does so. His Cradily shrieks when she's released, latching to the ground.[break][break]

"Cil, get us some cover! Lulu, see about setting up a trap! Kasper, Riftia, boost yourself! Brace!" The Golurk groused and raised another hand to try and slam down on the group of them again.[break][break]

Slow naturally, the sand doesn't help. She shifts and tries to Rock Polish to give herself a boost of speed.[break][break]

kasper isn't sure what they're expecting from this, but it wasn't just chatter. the other three acted like this was just an every day scenario and, fuck, maybe it was. maybe six months from now they'd be talking about this like it was nothing, too.

they kind of doubted it, but nothing was impossible. they had grown up in hoenn, after all.

that was even if anything showed up. so far, they were just scouting, so it was probably fine? as fine as the circumstances could be, anyway, when they were still certain any fuckup would be horrible for them.

the ground begins to shake and splits, a gigantic golurk rising from the sand, and kasper's first thought is that it's absolutely the fuck not okay, actually. temp has it under control, though, or they hope. he barks out orders, and kasper scrambles for the pokeball of the lycanroc they had been lended.

kasper is pretty sure the pokemon is just as confused as they are, but it rights itself quickly with a howl, already seemingly more prepared for the battle than the person (temporarily) in charge of it.

she didn’t respond to her brother, both in part because she wasn’t so sure they were safe as he assumed, and also because her attention had caught on those strange shadowy claws of his. where had those come from?[break][break]

her eyes lingered until pulled away by the massive golurk who dramatically rose from the sands before them, glowing-eyed and menacing. the terrain shifted, and as she scrambled back a few steps, she pulled a tera orb from her pocket and held it up. more crystals gleamed as her minior TERASTALLIZED into the singular rock-type.[break][break]

”got it!” she acknowledged back to temp, quickly commanding over her shoulder, ”STEALTH ROCK, minior.”[break][break]

the meteorite pokemon drifted forward, sparkling under the sun. stones emerged from the depths of sand around the giant, levitating all around in a sharp barrier.[break][break]

The Golurk rumbles and chatter deeply again, the shield around it shattering. That only seems to agitate it. Now free of the sand, it takes quick steps towards them, intent to crush with massive feet. Tempest feels like a bug but he can spot a flaw here- it is massive and sand shift with each step. Just maybe...[break][break]

they've managed to do...something, although it seems more like they've all just managed to make the golurk mad instead of doing anything important. it's eyes flare, and as it charges forward, kasper finds themself scrambling out of the way with a glance at hambone. and the others with them, because they're just going off of what temp says. they couldn't deal with this on their own.

nobody has been crushed to death- yet- so they'd consider that a win on its own. at least from what they can tell. with the sand, they have to squint to make out the forms of anyone else.

they nod, even if they're sure temp can't see it, before they're directing their attention, just briefly, to the orange form of hambone. "accelerock!" they're regretting even saying it, with the sand that flies into their mouth, but they'll deal with that later. hambone is already gone, rushing toward the golurk, and kasper can only hope that they haven't just sent someone else's pokemon to its death.

the giant didn’t seem to care about the trap they’d set, if it even noticed at all. its lumbering steps led it straight into levitating stones. along whips of violent sand, the rocks carved into glass until it shattered and rained sunglow crimson.[break][break]

as the sandstorm raged harder, she pulled up part of a scarf and goggles and charged through it, doing her best to be light on her feet over shifting terrain. at temp’s command, her finger shot up to direct her minior’s attack.[break][break]

”there!” she yelled over the wind, pointing to the brown seal across the golurk’s cracked chest.[break][break]

a bright light glowed around her minior, energy expanding like a white hot star before firing off its ancient power at their target.[break][break]

The titan seems so small next to the immense Golurk. But there is no fear in the Armor Pokemon's roar as ROCK POLISH surges over its hulking form. Through its SANDSTORM it charges, narrowly DODGING the Golurk's rampage and slamming full-force into the back of its knee.

With a deafening groan, the colossal Golurk's eyes blaze with an intense, crimson light as it taps into a surge of dynergy. Raising its massive arms, it slams them into the ground with tremendous force, sending shockwaves that ripple through the sand. The ground beneath the team quakes violently and splits into pieces.
