hideaway

considering the last time seiichi had ended up at something even vaguely masquerade-related, it would probably be a better decision to not be here. which meant that he was going to be here, because there was no way he was going to let the moment slip for any reason other than his health.

this time, at least, the party is fuller, and it's easy enough to get lost in the crowd. which also means there's less of a chance of things going south for him in particular again. probably. hopefully.

graham, decorated neatly in a service pokemon vest, sticks by his side as he navigates the crowd in a bejweled, feathered, eye-catching (or eyesore, depending on who you asked) purple mask and a suit to match. the bar is closest, and, in the end, that's where he winds up.

just in time to overhear a stranger, swirling orange juice in their cup, speak up about the whole thing. he should probably ignore it, but- there's nobody else around, and seiichi would die if he didn't get to talk to someone, he's sure.

"really? i think they're fun." the fact that he's gone all out probably speaks for itself in that fact, though.

there's a second where seiichi thinks- or maybe hopes- that the stillness will convince the mawile there's nothing there. his lungs begin to ache, but the less reasonable part of his brain tells him that if he even dares to breathe deeply enough that the mawile will find them, and that will be it.

he doesn't notice that his companion, the other rocket, has stepped closer to him. he doesn't notice the sharp feathers, either. his attention is just on the mawile, which snarls suddenly, leaving seiichi's mind a mantra of no no no and the desperate hope that maybe it's noticed something else.

a hope that doesn't last long.
[break][break]
the mawile charges through the undergrowth, then, with a speed and ferocity that could catch anyone off guard. it's all he can do to snap his fingers at graham, an unspoken order to fall back, before he is stumbling back and squinting against the brilliant light getting closer and closer. he doesn't get far, though, before the thing leaps.
[break][break]
the light that comes with it is blinding, and the only thought process seiichi can manage is not my face, arceus please not my face, anything else is fine. there's no pain, though, and although he can feel blood splatter across his face, he knows, then, that it's not his.
[break][break]
he blinks, lights still dancing in his vision from how blinding the mawile had been, and takes in the scene in front of him. the glowing pokemon, feathers through its jaw, snarling and writhing in pain just in front of him. and the other rocket, who seemed like this was an everyday thing, appearing to be surprisingly unphazed from the comment he makes.

"you did just stab it through the jaw, to be fair." not that the mawile deserves fairness, after trying to eat his face.

if seiichi said they were expecting maki to answer them straightforward, they'd be lying. they'd mostly expected their sister to answer with something just as sarcastic, but the fact that she doesn't has their brows furrowing in something like older-brother worry. not that they'd ever admit that in a million years, to themself or least of all anyone else.

there's a bit of confusion there, to, as she mentions the ogre. "what ogre?" there's so much going on that their brain doesn't entirely piece together the way she stops leaning on their to kick at the door until it's too late. by the time their brain comes the closest to connecting the pieces- or they decide it can wait- they're moving to try to stop maki from any property (or herself) damage. "hey, wait-"

it's not their awkward fumble that causes maki to stop, and seiichi knows it- she deflates too easily, and looks too disheveled in a way that would almost make them sure they're looking at a stranger instead of their younger sister.

they're not nearly as clumsy when it comes to their phone, and they're moving to dial a number they have countless times in the past almost faster than the words are out of maki's mouth. there's also a preparation to tell their family doctor that they don't need help this time.

as the phone rings, loud against their ear, they have to resist the urge to ask questions. those can wait.

so they had just completely been ignored. okay. that was....well, it wasn't fine, but that was mostly because seiichi wasn't used to it. for a second, they think about protesting- but they take one look at the unchanging expression on the mask, still that grin, and decide not to. mostly because a tiny, petty part of them wonders if something can happen to scare the other rocket.

the glowing light stays where it is, but there's an awful, wet crunching sound that comes from it, and if seiichi is honest with themself, they're sure they can almost imagine the underlying sound of flesh being torn from something. at first, they want to brush it away, to say it's just their own imagination. and then they get closer.

even if it hadn't been for the light, it's obvious that the mawile is eating something. the dark shape is unmoving, probably long dead, and from where they're at seiichi can't tell what it is that's fallen victim to this strange, glowing pokemon. they know they don't want to be next, though- and when it moves, sniffing the air like it's scented them, they freeze, even their breath catching in their throat at the idea of this freak of nature coming for them.

in the corner of their eye, they can see graham. although the lycanroc is just as quiet, seiichi can see the way her hackles raise, fur along her back beginning to bristle in apparent unease of her own.

seiichi liked shiny things. he especially liked when said shiny things were something that could make his outfits stand out thanks to the brilliance of some poor designers. if they had been asked to deal with glitter, or sequins, or anything like that, he would have agreed to it in a heartbeat.

he had agreed to this, but mostly out of curiosity. and now he was already starting to regret it, from the way the masked rocket member is watching him like he's about to be sacrificed. maybe he is.

"not....really?" graham, at his feet, huffs in what he can only assume is apparent agreement. she's not a battling pokemon- none of them are- and he can only hope that the lycanroc's vest is visible through the weird mask.

to seiichi, two days would have been nothing. hoenn is a big place, and there's so much to do- some part of him would like to claim that maki's just gotten caught up in things. the other part of him knows just as well as the rest of his family that she'd never do such a thing, and he can see why they'd want someone to look for her. if they don't protect their own, after all, then who will?

which is why he only grumbles and complains a little when they finally ask him before he gives in.

the travel there is easy enough- this time- but he isn't expecting to see the shape maki is actually in. she's bleeding, and her clothes are torn, and she looks exhausted when she practically falls into him. he reaches out to half-steady her, torn between some form of concern and being unsure of what to do, and says the first thing that comes to mind-

"you look like you've been hit by a bus."
