for every hyperactive trick-or-treater looking to reap the benefits of the generous souls offering their share of goodies ranging from small chewables to large bars of sugar-filled greatness, surely there's a heinous hooligan -- mainly in the form of a slightly older, mischievous kid, perhaps a pre-teen even -- looking to try and sabotage their experience. amongst the crowds of supervised tots with candy bags in hands, there stood some suspicious fellows sporting bags of their own, but not of any sweet delicacies. rather, weapons of mass destruction in the form of eggs and toilet tissue rolls filled their bags.[break][break]

cue the child protective services, courtesy of a nidoking donning a radiant blue hide, for he and his trainer, one silverio eligio delfino, are out in support of the kids above all else. one devious delinquent in particular sought to swipe one poor unsuspecting child's candy bag, only to be met with a massive steel-like tail, knocking them back by several feet, much to the delight of other children. other ruffians are found tossing loose toilet tissue rolls around, enveloping trees and other structures in white, but a fierce roar from the rough-and-tough nidoking would scare them away.[break][break]

seeing this, some kids in their immediate vicinity dared to approach the beast, perhaps under the impression that it was just an older kid in a monstrous costume that almost looks too real. the kids proceed to invest their enjoyment running circles around the shiny pokémon.[break][break]

perhaps 'ring around the rosy' was never any more fun than what it appears to be now, except that no one other than the aforementioned thugs would be falling down here today.

so goes an old saying: 'it ain't easy being green.' little would this garden's caretaker would know that some critters would also be looking to reap the benefits of all the green that this locale has to offer. the suspected critter in a question? a little pink brat sporting a hammer, and needless to say, she's found to be swinging for the fences in pursuit of silverio's berries.[break][break]

she would not go unnoticed, however. a pudgy, grassy friend donning spiny armor - one who has been tasked with guarding this sacred ground - greets the tinkatuff with rutheless aggression in kind. a swift wood hammer puts the brat down for the count. the ranger rushes outside upon hearing the ongoing ruckus, and it wouldn't take long at all for the man to assess what had just transpired.[break][break]

"nice try, little one..." he addresses the pink hammer-wielding misfit. "if you were looking for a quick snack, we'd be happy to share." if she were to ask nicely, that is.

whoa...talking about living larger than life! the next pumpkaboo being showcased is clearly the biggest one yet, quite possibly the largest one that silverio has ever seen. not every guess, however, may sound as simple as anyone else's. regardless, an attempt is made. one thing is apparently certain, and it may be that this pumpkaboo must have been, as the cool kids, 'eating good'.

oh right, she did mention an ariados creeping about somewhere in the household, with eggs nested somewhere. of course, he feels sure enough of himself that he'll be able to unglue the fellow ranger from the sticky scenario that she has allegedly found herself in. his only hope now, however, is that he wouldn't need to contend with a hungry momma spider in search of her next meal. try as he may to shield any hint of concern from impairing his vision, worry continues to cloud his conscience like a patch of thick fog in a dark, swampy marsh.[break][break]

silverio and his crew continue their survey of the mysterious chambers, in search of a sign..."....downstairs!...kitchen...!"[break][break]

"did you guys here that...!?" an audible signal, albeit distorted behind a closed door. the leafeon, with its verdant ears, shuffles over to the area in question. a gentle grazes the wooden structure, as if to say that the trouble may be lurking on the other side. a fine job of detection, precisely one of the key marks in which it's been trained for. in the kitchen lies a door wide shut. silverio dares to reach for the knob and attempts to turn it, but to no avail.[break][break]

"it's locked...[break][break]

but not for long! the combined efforts of the sandslash's claws and the leafeon's blade-like tail are enough to blast the door wide open. at the first crack, silverio treks cautiously, eyes down to the floor as he descends -- wouldn't want to break any eggs open with his feet. and speaking of...[break][break]

"whoa..."[break][break]

surprise, surprise. talk about a potential infestation! with the momma spider nowhere in sight -- at least for the moment -- silv makes haste for the mass of webbing that could be said as being hard to miss, along with a seeminly unconscious elgyem. "sasky...hang on, we'll get you out." with that said, and with gloves slapped on, he goes straight to work. his sandslash offers an assist with his claws to cut down the entangling web, while the leafeon is assigned for babysitting duties.[break][break]

"careful now..."[break][break]

as he weaves through the web, he looks to take care not to mishandle the woman attached to it in any that could possibly make this scene incredibly more awkward that it may already appear to be. suddenly, one snap and a good chunk of the web comes undone. instinctively, silv reaches sasky with both arms. if he's successful in catching her, she'll find his arms linked tightly around her.

"alright, you two...let's run it again!"[break][break]

how he hadn't been deployed here at any time in recent memory was beyond belief to him. the tropical atmosphere of this seaside town was but a calming reminder of some thrills he had experienced in his homeland. although the town where he'd been born and raised was more of an arctic vibe above all else, some parts of the world he once knew were more viable spots where he and his poképals could catch some of the sun's rays. but frankly, not too much of them. after all, too much of a good thing is not necessarily a good thing. in hindsight, some fresh air is needed, especially during these trying times.[break][break]

silverio endeavors to make the most of this rare opportunity for some downtime. much of that time has been spent reshaping his craft -- commandeering his pokémon to sharpen their skills. two of them in particular are eager to optimize their own handiwork as well. the first of them being the paldean's trusted amphibian ninja warrior, and the second being a four-legged plant-like friend that'd been recently designated for field work. greninja tosses a pair of his patented water shuriken at the leafeon as a means of practice, only for the latter to cut them down with a razor-like leaf blade.[break][break]

"nice! one more time!" the ranger commands...[break][break]

traversing the aquatic routes, the pokéduo continue their regimen for but a few moments, until the frog lets a water ninja star loose pre-emptively, sending it sailing across shallow waters nearby in an wide arc. where would it land...!? "hey! watch out!!" he calls to a unfamiliar figure in the distance.[break][break]

how silly...the team's job is to protect the environment and its people, not to endanger them...!!

a lot has happened since then...[break][break]

since the last time that silverio has gotten to invest his downtime in some rest and relaxation. at times where he wasn't on duty, he'd been zeroed in on his environmental studies. if not that, then some afternoons were spent engaging in private practices with his poképals. of course, some people have recently learned of his status as a champion. indeed, he has been one, but not here in hoenn. what is he, exactly? aside from being a natural-born dork, that is. suppose it's hard to say at this point in time, what, with the region - no, the world - being threatened by forces immeasurable by any normal means.[break][break]

still...[break][break]

in the midst of an environment that is ever changing, one thing that has remained a constant throughout trying times is his connection to a select fellow peers -- one in particular of which has recently been repositioned in the recreational town of lavaridge as one of the rangers' leading representatives. indeed, airi was well-deserving of such an appointment. or to say the least, she was in silv's eyes. their separation from their previous station together would change nothing in regards to the unique bond that the two colleagues had built and shared throughout their days in the organization.[break][break]

the paldean made a point for himself to arrange a day to visit his favorite medical expert. alas, that day has finally come -- today. the time he seeks to share with airi today would be well worth the winding hike through jagged passageways, a subtle reminder of the last time they had ventured to this town together. a rocky road, indeed.[break][break]

tagging along with silv today is a four-legged friend that he had designated for field work, a leafeon. together, they await their longtime companion, both seated at hardwood bench near the town's entrance. suppose he may have arrived a tad early, but it matters not. forever and a day he'd be willing to stand idly by...to see her again...

a bit off the mark with the first guess. oh well, as an old saying goes 'if at first you don't succeed, try and try again'. but how many tries will it take to nail down the bigger prize? who's to say, but for the time being, the man's got to get his braincells moving! the next pumpkaboo being presented appears to be considerably smaller in size than the first -- lesser in stature than what he had guessed previously, perhaps?

robin's question prompts his attention for the moment, then diverting his eyes to the masked individual in question, to which he shakes his head. "...doesn't look any bit familiar to me, then again, it's kinda hard to recognize anyone while we're all masked up." and suddenly...[break][break]

"ain't no way..." an ongoing development...[break][break]

that of which he may have never anticipated. and yet, who on earth could have expected the workings of what's transpiring now. everyone's pokémon being forced to return to their balls, rendering their owners unable to call them out again. luckily for silverio, however, he didn't bother to bring out of his any own pokéfriends -- perhaps they'd be safer in their spherical chambers.[break][break]

words slipping and sliding downward...[break][break]

uncertain of what to make of them, and with a look that bleeds confusion, he turns to robin who appears all too eager to get herself acclimated with whatever this happenstance is shaping up to be. silverio isn't quite sure what may spook him more: the mystery that's potentially unraveling here, or the idea that robin may be genuinely enjoying it.[break][break]

before his mind can process any bit of it, he is tugged along by her, his eyes directed to a parcel, with the girl being too quick to open it. when asked for his opinion, he begins rummaging through every sheet of tainted parchment -- all of which contained details unlike he had ever written up himself. a theory comes to mind, however.[break][break]

"this does look...strangely familiar..."[break][break]

he continues to scan the pages in search of the slightest inch of a clue as to what the party guests may be essentially cursed with now. "somehow this reminds me of the field work that i used to do as part of my curriculum in paldea." he can vaguely recall jotting down every bit of detail of the things he had encountered out in the wild back in the day...[break][break]

although..."it's like whoever set this up is trying to tell us something...but what...!?"

before long, an eerie presence fills the air around the man and his dark-bladed companion. he silverio hadn't recalled any reports of troublesome 'no-good-doers' in the area as of late, so...what was this feeling? a hunch that something mysterious is afoot? something...spooky, perhaps? whatever the case, the paldea-born ranger braces for any...[break][break]

uhh...[break][break]

anything that could be deemed...problematic...ghostly or not? behind him, a faint thud prompts his attention. he turns to see his spectral soldier being pestered a floating body of plasma to a point where the ceruledge found himself pinned with his back against the trunk of a tall tree. the dark knight would rather not wish to harm the wild rotom, that is to say, not without orders from his commander of course.[break][break]

"easy there..." silv advises his soldier, as the floating plasma sways towards the ranger's direction, circling around him for a couple laps then levitates to meet him at eye level. "...think it needs help?" the man asks nobody in particular. convinced by virtue and instincts alike, he holds a hand out to the creature. "it's alright...we won't hurt you..."[break][break]

and they wouldn't. little would they knew that, for the duration of their expedition, they would find the rotary critter tailing behind them...

the hills surrounding mauville have quickly become a go-to spot for some much-needed respite. silverio may not be able to efficiently explain why if asked, but something about the terrain here had somewhat reminded him of home. he can vividly recall times where he had to traverse lands similar to these, challenging his mind and body to scale upward. despite the fact that he would oftentimes be out surveying the fields at times like these...[break][break]

suffice to say that the thrill of the hunt has never wavered -- the hunt for new pokéfriends to make, that is. although, in the case of his current tenure, it sounds to be more comrades-in-arms rather than pals. nonetheless, silverio and ceruledge scurry along, watchful azure eyes scouting the vicinity as they take refuge for the moment, within a patch of tall greens.
