the conversation with the ranger is oddly charming, miyako considers as she snaps a few more pictures of the now stationary magnezone. it's not often she runs into someone so... straightforward. usually it's all underhanded deals and backdoor politics. but silverio seems like the kind of guy who would say what he means and mean what he says. a surprise for slateport.[break][break]

but business is business, even with novel concepts.[break][break]

a slow smirk spreads across miyako's face as silverio ponders the idea. "yep," she confirms. "those big eyes just pop. could see it now - him decked out in cute little costumes, playing dress-up. maybe a lycanroc in mareep clothing shoot..."[break][break]

ah, but with one last click of the shutter, the digital card has no more space for anymore photos. sighing, she places the cap on the lens and plods off to the side, where she deposits herself into a nearby park bench. now that she can't take anymore pictures, what's she gonna do now? have an actual, genuine conversation? booooring.[break][break]

on the bench, she lights up another cigarette, idly playing with an empty pokeball in her other hand. "you new to slateport?" she asks finally. "you don't strike me as a city slicker."[break][break]

even as a mawile wanders into miyako's vision, her eyes don't light up, and her muscles hardly tense as she idly throws her pokeball at it. she doesn't seem to much care for the excitement of life.

as miyako adjusts her grip on the pokeball, she flicks a quick glance at silverio. "oh, definitely," miyako confirms with a sly grin. "your good side is definitely on the right. your left is kind of… eh." she shrugs, the motion sending smoke trailing from her cigarette.[break][break]

as she speaks, miyako takes a step to the side, opening her line of sight to the ferroseed. it's still rolling slowly towards her, its metallic spikes glinting in the pale wash of slateport streetlights. miyako flicks her cigarette butt aside and focuses on the pokeball in her hand, which she throws with reckless abandon. the arc of her throw rings true and, before long, the ferroseed is caught, carefully nestled up on the inside of miyako's pokeball.[break][break]

a smile breaks her face as she returns the pokeball to her belt, before turning back towards silverio. she raises her camera again and peers through the viewfinder.[break][break]

"your lycanroc is really photogenic though. you ever considered having it be a pokemodel?" miyako murmurs as she snaps another picture of the wolf pokemon, this time framed by even more wild pokemon milling in the background. "it's good money, honestly."

miyako snaps a few photos of josh and the walking wake posing dramatically, a wide grin plastered on her face. "holy shit, that's dope as hell," she mutters under her breath, already envisioning the kind of prints she could make out of these photos.[break][break]

"i'm miyako," she finally replies, putting her camera away for now. "i work down at slateport, but i'm out here using up some sick leave. heard you were out here, thought i'd check out the legend for myself. never seen nothin' like that before."[break][break]

she jerks a thumb towards the walking wake, her eyes still wide with amazement. she'd seen some incredible things in her line of work, but something about the paradox pokemon just stuck with her. "what's the deal with it, anyway? i don't even know what it is."[break][break]

she assumes josh and the beast will be going somewhere, with all that steam forming—either to the pillar or the race course, she figures. with a glance at the sky, she readjusts her glasses, judging the weather, before glancing back at josh. "so, where are you headin'? and can i get a ride, too? promise i'll be good." she adds with a smirk.

oh, wow. miyako is more than a little impressed with captain shalin and her badass ride. she practically bounces on her feet, eyes sparkling with excitement. "yeah, yeah, i'm miyako, worst police officer this side of mt. pyre," she says, more to herself than anything, evidently distracted with trying to find a way to saddle the tyranitar.[break][break]

as for actually riding the thing, well... miyako grins. she's not a small woman, and she's got decent muscle on her, but compared to this beast, she's basically a sack of potatoes. "well, yeah, i'd expect nothing less. the best part of a rodeo is falling on your ass anyways," she jokes, even as she steps forward, curiosity burning within her.[break][break]

a rush of adrenaline fills miyako as she steps forward and, with a shift of her legs, pulls herself up and atop the tyranitar. as she slips into the saddle, she takes hold of the reins affixed to him, and looks down at jiwari with a wide grin. this will definitely be the ride of a lifetime!

miyako is merciful for a second. she likes motorcycles too, after all, and seeing one like june's get scratched up in traffic would probably bring a tear to her eye. the officer waves a hand, an implicit permission passing between them for just a second, until...[break][break]

oh, fuck. miyako can't help but wince as june's face collides with the stop sign. the loud clang of metal meeting skull reverberates through the air, and for a brief moment, the world seems to hold its breath. miyako exhales sharply—june just entered brain damage city. unfortunate for june, but pretty fortunate for miyako. she's a little too hungover to be going on a high speed chase right now.[break][break]

ambling over, miyako positions herself over june and bends down. the sound of metal against metal rings out in the busy roadway as miyako affixes the handcuffs to june's wrists. "dude, relax. i'm not gonna do shit to your bike," miyako sighs as she secures june's new shackles. "i just kinda feel bad for you now."[break][break]

with june secured, miyako drags her to her feet and guides her toward the police bike. she glances back at the motorcycle, sighing inwardly. maybe she can get it towed somewhere safe instead of impounded. it’s the least she can do, considering how this night’s gone.[break][break]

"come on," she grumbles. "let's get this over with."

miyako unclips the handcuffs from her belt and stares at june, raising her eyebrows as if to say turn the fuck around already. alas, she has questions. too many questions. miyako feels like she's in the academy again, getting quizzed about radio codes and felony degrees by a lady with a weird wart on her chin.[break][break]

what did june do again? miyako glances upwards as she rakes her brain in search of the right information.[break][break]

"well, depends on how stupid you are in front of a judge," miyako begins. "but, uhh, let's see... obstruction of justice by bribery,--"if that's even a good word for whatever that was"--which is a misdemeanor or felony, and then... three misdemeanors for traffic violations. so, let's see..."[break][break]

miyako pauses as she adds it all up in her head. "20k at least for bail. probably another 20k for obstruction. maybe an additional thousand for the traffic stuff."[break][break]

miyako looks back down, furrowing her brows. she might have miscounted. if she's being honest, it's probably more like... 21 thousand instead. but who knows cops for being honest?[break][break]

miyako jingles her handcuffs. "hey, did you hear me? turn around. i'm arresting you."

june's hand makes miyako lose grip of her paper and pen, and it clatters to the asphalt underfoot with a resonant thud, causing miyako's brows to knit together. "what the fu--"[break][break]

miyako is about to lean down and recover her supplies when june's sudden movement catches the officer's attention—an understatement, really, as miyako finds her eyes lingering on the spot of june's chest where her zipper demarcates the difference between a plunging neckline and the rest of her jacket. "--uckkkkkkkk...?" her nigh abandoned curse comes out of her throat strangled, a little breathy, rougher than she intends.[break][break]

june bet right. miyako is bi. and, right now, miyako is counting her lucky stars that she is, because dayummmmmmm.[break][break]

miyako feels the heat rush to her face as she tries to process what just happened. her mind is muddled, a mess of alcohol and exhaustion, making it difficult to focus on anything but the image in front of her. for a split second, she's caught, her eyes betraying her as they flicker downward. but then the reality of the situation hits her like a cold splash of water. yeah, she's gotta do her job now, no matter how much she doesn't want to.[break][break]

her expression hardens, albeit artificially, as she straightens up, trying to regain her composure. miyako steps back, breaking the momentary tension, and clenches her fists to steady herself.[break][break]

"you're under arrest," miyako says, her voice firmer now, though the rasp from earlier still lingers. she bends down to pick up her pen and notepad, slipping them back into her pocket with a quick motion. then, she reaches for the handcuffs on her belt. "turn around and put your hands behind your back. now."

the steady rhythm of whiskey’s paws hitting the ground echo through the dimly lit tunnel, each step a comforting thud that reverberates off the stone walls. rusturf tunnel is quiet today, the usual flow of hikers and travelers noticeably absent, which suits miyako just fine. she isn’t here for the sights or the sounds—she is here because she is bored out of her mind and needed something, anything, to do.[break][break]

miyako leans forward slightly, her hands gripping the thick fur of her stoutland as they navigate the uneven terrain. whiskey, ever the reliable companion, moves with practiced ease, his nose occasionally twitching as he picks up on scents hidden in the cool, damp air. the tunnel might not be the most exciting place in hoenn, but it is better than sitting around doing nothing. besides, there is a certain peace in the isolation, the way the world outside seemed to fade away, leaving only the rhythmic sound of whiskey’s paws and the distant drip of water from the tunnel ceiling.[break][break]

"ugh, whiskey," miyako muttered, looking down and patting her loyal steed. the stoutland gives a huff in response, his ears flicking back to catch her voice. "there's gotta be somewhere cool in this damn place. sniff it out, 'kay?"[break][break]

as if on cue, whiskey steers the both of them down a narrower path, the tunnel’s rocky walls pressing closer on either side. the dim light from her flashlight casts long shadows, making the space feel even more enclosed, but miyako doesn't mind. spelunking is kinda hip and cool right now anyways.

miyako had heard the rumors—josh devlin was in pacifidlog. she couldn't resist the urge to see it for herself. after all, how often did you get to witness someone riding pokémon like it was an extreme sport? while she could often care less about her job, and cutting corners was a way of life for her, she was also an extreme adrenaline junkie, and she knew she couldn't miss this.[break][break]

she arrives at the floating city with a purpose, her camera ready and her mind clear. as she wanders the docks, her eyes scan the horizon until she spots him—a figure with unmistakable spiky black hair, standing beside a pokémon that made her brows raise. she doesn't even recognize it, she only knows that it looks like it just stepped out of some epic fantasy book.[break][break]

"josh devlin, right?" she calls out, a grin spreading across her face as she draws closer. "you ridin' that thing?"[break][break]

she doesn't really want to act like a fangirl, so she tries to play it cool, even if there's a bit of an uncharacteristic pep in her step. "mind if i get a few shots? they'd look cool as hell," she says, indicating to the camera hanging around her neck. the unspoken part of her also wants to ride the walking wake.

miyako lets out a low whistle as she watches the tyranitar finally come to a stop, her eyes wide with a mixture of awe and disbelief. she had seen some wild things in her time, but this? this is something else entirely. as the green-haired woman weakly waves, miyako quickly closes the distance between them, a grin spreading across her face.[break][break]

"dude!" she calls out, practically bouncing on her feet as she reaches shalin. "were you riding that thing? that’s freaking awesome!"[break][break]

miyako's excitement is palpable, her exhaustion from earlier completely forgotten. "i mean, look at this guy!" she gestures to the massive rock-armored Pokémon, her voice filled with awe. ...she kinda wants to ride the thing too. is it like a bucking tauros at all those old rodeo shows? "like, how? and can i try?"

miyako doesn't lower her camera immediately, even as she senses the presence of someone behind her. the absol, though still for a moment,swiftly vanishes into the trees, leaving only the rustling of leaves in its wake. just as it does, miyako clicks the shutter and captures the scene before leaning backwards to lay eyes upon the photo taken. a wide shot of the forest. it is lonely, almost melancholy, save for the hind legs of the absol, diving into underbrush. a good photo, if miyako says so herself. artistically, at least. she's unsure how it will fare for the other photographer's needs.[break][break]

miyako finally straightens and stands to her full height, though still doesn't give the councilwoman her full attention as she quickly runs her fingertips across the smooth chrome surface of her camera in search of adjusting a few settings. "well, i'd say a job done quickly is better than a job done slowly," miyako says finally, a hint of a smile curling up at the corners of her mouth.[break][break]

she looks up to penelope finally, brushing a loose strand of stark black hair from her face. "you got any experience with a camera?"

miyako removes her respirator as soon as they crest above the water. her hair is soaked, her body uncomfortably wet, and her knuckles certainly bruised from the force with which she punched the dondozo (which, in retrospect, did very little), but there's a wide smile on her face.[break][break]

she gets the undercurrent of kyle's question, and the way he looks at the steel lockbox. why even bother? he seems to be saying.[break][break]

"and all i had to do was punch a dumb fish!" is miyako's reply, and the feeling behind her words is also clear: success is so much sweeter when you do very little to achieve it.[break][break]

and truly, they both had done very little. bar punching a fish and digging for a few moments beneath some sediment, the lockbox had honestly fallen into her hands. she'd say the day had turned out to be a success.[break][break]

still, doing all of that was still way more than she was used to. miyako yawns and stretches as she feels her eyelids grow heavier. "tell me when we're back at shore, 'kay?"[break][break]

with that, she reclines on the back of kyle's gyarados, promptly falling asleep with the lockbox in her lap.

miyako closes her eyes, in the arceus give me strength kind of way, as the cyclist begins to make at least a few excuses for running a red light.[break][break]

"if i'm remembering right, the light before red—yellow—means slow down, and not speed up," miyako sighs, rubbing at her temple with a gloved finger. "even if nobody got hurt, it's just reckless. you'll get someone killed if you keep doing shit like that."[break][break]

and that's the whole point of miyako's job, isn't it? to keep people from getting killed? yeah, right. as if cops are actually useful nowadays.[break][break]

miyako sighs again as she pulls a pad and pen out from her pocket. maybe a fine might make a difference? nobody really wants to pay a few hundred pokedollars everytime they run a light. is it a deterrent, though? or just a motivation to be a bit sneakier about it? miyako's unsure. maybe this was the wrong career choice. "sorry. writing you a ticket. didn't really want to, but here we are."
