miyako squints through the murky water, trying to make sense of kyle's flailing hand gestures. the whirlpool created by the battling gyarados and dondozo makes it even harder to focus. whatever kyle's trying to say, miyako's patience runs thin.[break][break]

forget it, she thinks, her frustration bubbling over.[break][break]

without overthinking it, miyako swims straight toward the massive dondozo. the creature looms like a living fortress beneath the water, its eyes fixated on gyarados. miyako doesn’t care that it’s probably not the best idea, or that kyle might have had something more strategic in mind. she just wants to put an end to this chaos.[break][break]

she propels herself forward with a burst of speed, her fist clenched tight. the dondozo, preoccupied with gyarados, doesn’t notice her approach until it’s too late. with all the force she can muster, miyako delivers a solid punch right to the side of the dondozo’s massive head. since she doesn't have any pokemon suitable for being underwater, she had to take matters into her own hands.[break][break]

miyako's eyes narrow as she pulls up alongside june's bike, the siren still wailing in the background. her head pounds with each beat of the noise, and she can practically feel the hangover digging its claws deeper into her skull. she takes a deep breath, trying to gather what little patience she has left.[break][break]

"you're shitting me, right?" miyako mutters under her breath as she stares at june's nonchalant demeanor. the visor flips up to reveal a pair of eyes that don’t look the least bit guilty. miyako can’t decide if she’s impressed by the audacity or just annoyed.[break][break]

the officer kills the siren, savoring the sudden quiet like a cool drink of water. even so, the relief is short-lived as she focuses on the situation at hand. her voice comes out rougher than she intends, a mix of exhaustion and frustration seeping through as she tilts her head down to look at the motorcyclist from above her sunglasses.[break][break]

"so, like, i think we both know why i pulled you over," miyako begins, every word that comes out of mouth sounding a lot like she's fighting her own vocal chords at every turn. "here's my request, though. can you just, like, not do that? like, you just don't have to. following traffic laws makes both of our nights so much easier."[break][break]

miyako doesn't want to deal with this. she wants to be anywhere else but here. but this is slateport, and the city never sleeps, even when she desperately needs it to.

miyako is still groggy as she dismounts whiskey, taking in the peacefulness of route 114. the air is crisp, and the scent of pine fills her lungs as she reaches up high to stretch out her arms. but, before she can fully relax, the ground beneath her feet begins to tremble.[break][break]

"what the hell…?" she mutters, instantly alert as the distant sound of crashing rocks and thundering footsteps reach her ears. miyako's instincts kick in, her hand immediately reaching for the pokeballs clasped to her belt loops. whiskey stands by her side, growling low, his eyes locked on the source of the disturbance.[break][break]

then, appearing on the trail ahead, is a massive, rock-armored Pokémon barreling toward them, the sheer force of its movement sending debris flying. what truly catches miyako’s eye isn’t just the terrifying beast itself—it is the person riding it. a green-haired woman, clinging to reins attached to the thrashing creature, completely fearless.[break][break]

miyako's eyes go wide. goddamn. that's cool as shit.[break][break]

even so, before the woman can process what she is seeing, a screech pierces the air, followed by a sharp cawing. her gaze snaps upward, where a mandibuzz is circling above, its keen eyes locked on a target down the trail—a small, defenseless mudbray that had wandered into the chaos.[break][break]

oh boy. poor thing. miyako doesn't really wanna see the vulture eat the poor thing, so the officer languorously pulls an empty pokeball from her bag.

miyako adjusts the strap of her camera, the familiar weight of it resting against her chest as she double-checks the settings. the request had come in late last night—a photographer working for the league needed assistance in capturing images of some rare wildlife. who better to send than someone who could do the job and watch their own back?[break][break]

“perfect gig,” miyako mutters to herself as she scans the horizon, the dense forest ahead of her hiding the first location on her list. the air is thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, the kind of place where you need to watch your step just as much as your surroundings.[break][break]

she isn’t worried. this isn’t her first rodeo, and it certainly won’t be her last.[break][break]

there should be a league-assigned partner meeting her right about now. for now, though... it doesn't hurt to get a head start! her eyes narrows as she spots movement in the underbrush—a flash of white and black that she recognized as an absol, its form sleek and powerful as it moved through the shadows. this is a bad omen, she's pretty sure. oh well.[break][break]

keeping her pointer finger on the shutter, miyako raises the viewfinder of her camera to her eye.

miyako can't help but laugh aloud at the stranger's caution. "i'm a photographer," miyako snorts. "sitting in weird places and taking pictures of random shit is kind of in the job description."[break][break]

miyako begins to incline her camera towards the man to allow him a chance to see the shot she had snapped, but pauses as the ranger picks up the ball of cotton. miyako hears the soft cry of the sheep pokémon and looks down to see the mareep nudging at silverio’s legs. the whole situation is almost absurd, but somehow it feels right for a quiet night in slateport. she raises her camera, snapping a few more candid shots of the mareep and lycanroc, their contrasting forms making for an interesting composition.[break][break]

but her attention is quickly diverted by a metallic glint in the corner of her eye. miyako smirks as she spots a ferroseed, half-buried in the shadows of the stall. it’s nestled between a pile of crates, its spikes glinting dangerously in the dim light. the mareep must have drawn it out of hiding with its electrical energy, and now it’s rolling slowly toward them, its spikes ready to launch at any perceived threat.[break][break]

"oh boy," miyako murmurs as she unclips a pokeball from her belt. "sneaking up on me, huh?"

oh. fuck. he actually believed her.[break][break]

she feels kind of bad about it. he looked really tired for just a second. while this is not the first time she's pawned off more difficult work to someone else, this is probably the first time she's actually wanted to take it back. "wait, kyle, i was just--" she stammers, reaching out.[break][break]

he leaps into the water. miyako's hand falters.[break][break]

"...messing with you."[break][break]

damn. once again, miyako faces the consequences of her own actions. miyako curses under her breath as she quickly adjusts her mask and slips into the water after him. the cold shock of the ocean helps clear her head, and she kicks her legs to propel herself downwards, following the faint silhouette of kyle ahead.[break][break]

the water is murky, the wreckage of sea mauville looming like a forgotten beast beneath the waves. they navigate through twisted metal and debris, the remnants of a once-grand facility now nothing more than a decaying husk. it’s eerily quiet, the only sounds their own breathing and the occasional groan of shifting metal.[break][break]

the wreckages they come across sparkle with information. not locked, as they've been summarily avoiding the more carefully protected areas, but of interest to the league nonetheless. passing alongside a room with shelves shattered across eachother, miyako carefully snaps a picture of the wreck, and then zooms in on the books and papers scattered alongside. too wet to bring back to the surface in one piece, but the quality of the picture is at least enough to read what was on them.[break][break]

the floor begins to tremble. miyako's eyes widen as she lowers her gaze to the shifting sand and dirt a few meters below them, and her breath catches as a massive blue fish parts from it. a dondozo, having lain in wait, now very hungry, with its eyes set on the two intruders into its newly drowned territory.[break][break]

miyako lights a cigarette, the ember glowing faintly as she lets the smoke curl around her like the shadows in the alleyways of slateport. she adjusts the focus on her camera, her eyes narrowing as she frames the ranger and his lycanroc in her viewfinder. the tension in the scene is palpable, the kind that made her pulse quicken, even if she never showed it.[break][break]

she clicks the shutter, capturing the moment where the ranger’s face is half-lit by the streetlights, his expression caught between concern and resolve. the lycanroc’s nose hovers close to the ground, alert but hesitant, like it was trying to decide whether this was a friend or foe. pulling back from the viewfinder, miyako searches the newly-captured photo for any impurities. upon finding none, she smiles. it's a good picture.[break][break]

“nice,” miyako murmurs to herself, exhaling smoke. she snaps another photo as the ranger approaches the shadow by the stall, her camera catching the subtle shift in his posture and the wariness of his partner. it seems, though, that they've found her. miyako isn't too fond of becoming dog food, so she slowly straightens from her crouched position and escapes the shadows of the stall to be fully illuminated by slateport's street lights. she meets silverio's eyes and smiles. she waves.[break][break]

"hey, man," miyako greets him. "just takin' pictures. wanna see?"

miyako is very asleep when she arrives at route 114. she only jostles awake when whiskey, her stoutland, skids to a decisive stop at the very beginning of the trailhead, almost knocking the snoozing officer off his back entirely. startling into lucidity, miyako slowly untangles her fingers from whiskey's fur as she blinks sleep from her eyes. "eh? are we here?"[break][break]

whiskey barks, as if to say: 'what the hell do you think?'[break][break]

miyako slowly takes in her surroundings. a rugged trail stretches out ahead of her, a long, winding path to meteor falls. she had heard it was picturesque, but wasn't aware just how beautiful it would actually be. the land is scarred with meteoric scars, and a well-worn path has been eroded into the face of a mountain. miyako manages a smile as she gently pats stoutland's head. "nice," she affirms. "good dog."[break][break]

whiskey holds his head higher and shakes out his long, elegantly groomed pelt, as if to say: 'when aren't i?'[break][break]

miyako slowly lowers herself down from her valiant steed, prepared to head out into the wilderness.

miyako glances up from where she secures a camera around her neck into a waterproof camera body. an easy job? "were you lied to or something?" the technician intones. "i mean, easy if you count trying to not get crushed by debris, i guess."[break][break]

satisfied that her camera body is secured well enough to prevent any water from seeping in and ruining the film, miyako gets to uncoiling her respirator and attaching it to the oxygen tank she will soon be strapping onto her back. her eyes are slack and blank, a sign that miyako is truly bored. underwater ruins may not be her usual haunt, but the task certainly is. salvage intel, take detailed pictures of whatever can't be brought up. just like every other day. siiiigh.[break][break]

at least another slacker is with her, an old colleague. kyle's probably more of a curse than a blessing, though. to miyako, at least. she finds it really funny to mess with him.[break][break]

"what? nah, i'm following your lead," miyako lies deftly as she pulls her oxygen pack over her back, though a smirk gives her away. "nah, for real though, we're just getting intel. hard drives and shit. i'm gonna be taking pictures of stuff we can't take, and general scenes. you ready?"[break][break]

this city is too goddamn bright. miyako groans as she squints through her sunglasses, slateport's nightlife doing nothing to help the pounding in her skull. most cops don't rage til the dying light and sleep til' their night shift, and miyako's certain her parents would be really disappointed to see their daughter in the throes of a hangover at the ripe time of 9 pm, but miyako keeps telling herself that she's not like other cops. she's a cool cop.[break][break]

she coughs into her hand, and her nose wrinkles. fuck, does her breath smell like vomit? the officer's expression visibly sours.[break][break]

miyako had prayed to whoever would hear her that this shift would be a quiet one, but miyako knows she isn't that lucky. her stomach lurches as a motorcycle goes blaring past her and through a red light, and adrenaline is pulled kicking and screaming into her addled head. she grits her teeth as she revs her own motorcycle into life and turns on her siren. is this really what's happening right now? is this really necessary?[break][break]

miyako revs her bike into the intersection. when a nearby car looks as if it's about to start off into the intersection, miyako slams her hand on the horn of her bike. she knows she shouldn't do it, but she whips her head around and throws her middle finger at the driver. if they want to be bad at following the laws of traffic, they deserve everything they get. soon enough, though, she's out of the intersection and pulling up alongside her original target: the other motorcycle, screaming through the bike lane ten over, running red lights. the first two infractions, miyako could ignore. the final one, though, she knows she can't. god, she really wants to, but she can't.[break][break]

the helmetless officer rides close behind june, sirens blaring, exhaust screaming. she hopes this doesn't turn into a chase. she really doesn't have the willpower to play that game right now.
