Aurora, much like Team Rocket, didn't care for comfort. Without Desmond's side of the bargain, she would've found herself laying in the exact same position, with the exact same level of oblivious audacity, waiting for a calloused hand to stroke her mane. Luckily, he caught on quick. So after a few sufficient pets, the fox-like pokemon let out a quiet trill and removed herself from the couch, finding the hunk of space next to Cyrus all-the-more desirable.

In meantime, Cyrus had found himself shuffling between the cabinets of his new, shabby desk, the brief case he'd been carrying laid wide open and within his reach. Upon closer examination, either Aurora or Desmond would find a mixture of mundane medical reports and gadgets strung with gold. It was an odd concoction, but so was he.

"Living at the edge of oblivion, huh," he repeated to himself, his movements dulling for a second as contemplation wrote over his mind.

Wouldn't that include them now?

He shuddered and returned to his shuffling.

"Not yet, no."

It was a half-life that he prematurely spun up during a recent trip to the bathroom. The same way he prepares for most interaction: wild, vivid fantasies of countless possible conversations he might find himself sucked into. But, well prepared or not, they both knew the obvious truth: if given the opportunity, Cyrus would've locked himself in Petalburg for the entirety of their stay.

Anyone who worked with Cyrus for even a second could deduce his distaste for noise. It was as innate to his state of existence as chaos was to Desmond. And yet, there was a certain discomfort hidden between the other man's words.

Gripping onto the handles of his briefcase, the rocket rose back to his full height, towering over the many cheap furniture pieces that decorated his home. The more space he traveled, the easier it was to breathe and contemplate the extent of the other man's perception of him. Why, of all people, was him that he cared to notice?

"It isn't," he agreed. He hated how buzzing the city was. It'd been a handful of days and assignments had already flocked to his inbox, creating a deluge of to-dos on his limited size notebooks. It was as if the region's disorganized nature was so rampant, so pure, it'd leak onto everything within its touch. Including, now, his innocent schedule.

Out from his bedroom, Aurora -- his alolan ninetales -- came. Her maw was left open, splitting into a long yawn, as she approached the couch. Without much warning, she perched herself beside Desmond, resting her head by his hand. She was practically demanding a pet from him.

Rocket had chosen it for him. Hand selected it to serve as an optimal resting spot in between jam-packed workdays. Still, it would've been better to accept the compliment. It wasn't like Desmond was naive to Team Rocket's overbearing nature. They were cut from the same cloth, after all, with years sliced from their freedom and sacrificed to the organization's ultimate goal. If anyone would understand, it'd be him.

Even then, Cyrus' body grew tense at the sight of Desmond. Reduced to a tin man starved of oil, all he could do was stare and think.

His voice trailed off, vanishing into a plume of smoke, as his eyes caught the the slip of brown laying at his feet. His briefcase. He still needed to pick it up.

Leaning down, he extended his arm out toward the slick leather handle bar, his eyes deliberately avoiding contact throughout the entire motion.

Cyrus knew of Hoenn's vigor. From Kanto, it was nearly impossible to avoid. Whether it be through magazine, news article, or internet forum discussion, there was always a new topic representing the state of the region. Often times it only reestablished what he already knew: his place was in Kanto, where life had been pressed into a simple rhythm of work and sleep.

It wasn't until a phone call came through, middle of the afternoon, that these plans were ruptured by Hoenn's never-ending hunger for more. They need support, the gruff voice informed him, they're low on medics.

If it hadn't been for his name - another gift from his parents - Cyrus might've slipped under the alphabetic radar. It might've been Xavier who received the Admin's call.

But fate was fickle and cruel, especially towards those most undeserving of its tenacity. So he packed up his bags, walked onto one of their main vessels, and rode across the ocean, over to the epicenter of conversation.

Only, when he arrived to his apartment, he hadn't expected to see a familiar face.

"Desmond?"

His voice spat out without warning. Quickly, Cyrus heard the sound of his briefcase smacking into the floor, as his hand ran up to cover his lips.

To her suggestion, he went to move the table, letting it's legs to scrap across the ground as he does so. It wasn't his actual laboratory, so wear and tear became an unimportant factor to his decisions. It'll be their problem to deal with, not his.

"It does," Cyrus agreed with a frown. He could feel his fingers flexing at his sides, wanting to pull at the table once more and make an attempt at the other wall again.

Petalburg wasn't home.

It reeked of oil and sweat; a sign of progress far more telling than any news article or tabloid. Cyrus was a piece of that change. A cog handpicked to whirl within the machine. Most would dismiss the necessity of his services - it didn't have the same glamour of bloodshed. But, without him, who would stitch their wounds? Who would patch their bleeding, or numb their pain?

Assignments had been given at the center of Petalburg, handed out through the bleating sound of a man and his megaphone. Cyrus didn't think to argue. What was the point?

Turning, he moved to walk back toward his laboratory when a newly built wall slammed into his chest.

Safety was his laboratory. Safety was white walls, clean instruments , and healthy patients. Safety was setting up furniture and aligning his schedule, as the sun settled into the nest of blue, because hell was about to arrive in the following days, and without organization, there would be no steering through the barrage of mangled bodies set for his office.

When the door opened, Cyrus didn't turn to look. Her aura gave it away instantly. And so did her potent perfume.

"Do you think this table looks better here, or to the right?"
[break][break]
He was standing to the left of the room, broad shoulders overlooking the additional steel table he'd shoved against the wall. The more he stared, the more certainty tugged his heart to the right. Only, when he had first moved the table, it had also looked out of place. Like either position left him wanting something that wasn't there.
