Strangers always irritated him. It wasn't so much as their fault, just what their inclusion to an area entailed. No longer could he devote his attention onto those possibly struggling to reach another breath. Now, in an awkward hellscape of conversation, his thoughts had been scrambled. Diverted far from the objective that led to their meeting in the first place.

His beating heart recoiled back behind a distant mask of cool expression, with dark eyes staring back at the apathetic woman as though to say what he struggle to say himself.

"What else is there to care for," he replied, his voice clipped. With his lab coat flowing behind every step, and his ninetails trailing beside him, the veterinarian drew himself closer to the other, eyes already caught onto something lurking just behind some bushes.

It was a Sawsbuck, munching on some sparse pieces of burnt grass.

Cyrus offered him a handful of food, then a home.

This was a laboratory paid and created for Rocket executives, admins, and all other chess pieces of Hoenn's underbelly. If not for his presence, there would most likely be another, far more cruel and stringent, with a sharp curiosity as to why a defect might be sniffing around the area. Even with him here, there was always the danger of Desmond making an appearance.

And, in that same vain, there was no one more aware of his deficiencies than Cyrus.

Their conversation was like clockwork. From the beginning to the end, he expected an awkward break from the casualty tossed between them. His therapist told him it was a sign of his lacking confidence. No matter how bright the sun shone, or how beautifully blue the sky was, caution would always find a way. 'What if it rains,' it would wonder, 'might as well go inside.'

For that reason, when he looked at desmond, now placed in front of him, he partially wish he'd go through with it.

To make him do what his past forbade him against.

Instead, he settled for the reprieve that came in its stead. Sighing, he answered, "Depends on the weather and place. For Slateport, I'm undecided."

Loyalty meant siezed schedules, redefined idenities, and teetering confidence. It meant sacrifice in the face of difficulty, even at the detriment of one's own goals. For so long, Cyrus contemplated this exchange between man and organization. For all that he gave, what was left? A community he'll never connect to? A war whose win condition hinged off destruction of wildlife and nature?

It wasn't equal, and he knew, deep down, it never would be.
[break][break]
So, in the scraps of time given in-between influxes of patients, he tried to give back. Spend time nurturing nature rather than tearing into it. During these times, he would often extend his visits far beyond the confines of Petalburg, or even slateport, finding the entire region far more destressing than he'd ever realize.

Cyrus' eyes traveled across the outstretch of sand. From what he could tell, the flood damage looked significant. It was like a laceration across the shores, with the surrounding forestry uprooted and pieces of wood lodged everywhere. He walked for a bit, taking it all in.

"Damn."

He clicked his tongue against the back of his teeth.

"That guy over there," From behind, his lofty shadow grew, approaching the blonde woman with an outstretched arm pointing at the kabutos. "might be suffering from an infection. That piece between his top right legs looks discolored. Way darker than the area around it."

Just as his body teetered off the edge of the table, so did Cyrus' confidence. It wobbled, it struggled, it fought. It was the most inconsistent piece of him, exacerbated by ticking of his mind. He was constantly thinking of the possibilities around him; what could be, if given the chance, and what would forever remain a fantasy. It was what made him good at his job - regardless the problem, he'd always come to a solution, his mind never failing to stumble or leap into a burst of "ah-ha!".

It was also what led to his downward spirals.

"I am good," he countered, eyes shifting away. They clung onto the doorframe and its odd imperfect state of crookedness.

Beyond the occasional crackle of leftover embers, silence washed the area, cradling the world in a soft embrace. Branches scratched his arms as he pressed past them, moving deeper into the center. He had overheard a coworker mention seeing multiple wounded Pokémon still hiding between the wooden carcasses that made up the woods.

it was the way he spoke about them that urged Cyrus to move. It was so dismissive, nonchalant. As if their distress was just another inevitable casualty in Team Rocket's pursuit of victory.

He couldn't accept it. He couldn't discard them that way.

So Cyrus took the free time he was given and packed up some supplies to make a trip to the woods. For a second, as he shuffled around his apartment, he contemplated sending a text to desmond sloane to see if he wanted to join him. But then he decided against bothering him with the suggestion.

"See anything?"

Glancing around, Cyrus' eyes sought the shadows Aurora, his alolan ninetails, avoided. Together, they swept the grounds, searching for tracks, hunting for a hint of sound.

Only, they didn't find anything. Not even a Patrat.

It wasn't until they pushed back a final thicket of shriveled shrubbery that they came face to face with, not a pokemon, but an emerald woman.

Opportunities were a rarity. Most days, Cyrus was a ghost to the living world. He'd hear conversation flicker between the open doors of the hallway, or from across the break room whenever he left to grab a drink. whether it be between close friends, colleagues, or acquaintances, he always envied their natural ability to connect. It made him feel even more of an anomaly, standing alone on his island.

But here, in the comfort of his own apartment, he found it. A chance to practice. To try his hand in the mental joust of wit and humor.

Desmond's attention still unnerved him, but that didn't mean much. He was always unnerved by something.

With his arms crossed and his ass perched against the edge of his desktop, Cyrus' mind fiddled with Desmond's words, raveling and unraveling them between his fingers. It was funny: even here, in the pinnacle of chaos, mundane work thrived. Even to the point of being designated to one of their best. It wasn't a surprising revelation - he'd known Desmond's flow of business ever since they were stationed in the same city back in Kanto. But there was still a certain satisfaction to its discovery.

Worse than the feeling of his own body betraying him was that of Desmond's attention. It burnt him, from the inside out, turning his heart into the sun. Everything felt scalding. Even his own mind, which ran with anxiety, traveling far off into the distance, where only crazy possibilities awaited him. Like one where Desmond somehow discovered what was inside the locket before he could pocket it, or one where he'd have to explain himself, or face the consequences of being shifty towards a coworker who was now permanently within his orbit.

At his words, Cyrus response became a ghostly specter, haunting the graveyard of his mouth. So he did notice. And now he was curious.

He pressed his lips together into a fine line, his brows locking into place. What was there to say to that?
[break][break]

"I-"
[break][break]

"I won't pry."
[break][break]

Then, in one swift swoop, relief freed him. He could feel his shoulders realigned themselves, the burden of stress no longer a weight to be carried.
[break][break]

"Sorry," He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair, combing back the black from his forehead. "Its just some forgotten history."
[break][break]

He'd understand, right? Not many came to Rocket with lives filled with splendor. There was always a reason to their enrollment. Whether it be through purpose or personal circumstances, loyalty never came by chance, only by choice.

Seconds swept by as Cyrus finished filing away the pieces of 'homework'. Only after did his voice reenter the conversation, its normalcy returned.

"Your business in Slateport."
[break][break]

Reborn anew, his eyes flickered to Desmond's.

Curiosity in others wasn't something he'd shown often. He learned early in life of the dangers of the practice. And yet, he asked the question:

The air was salted to taste, becoming of a proper welcome to Kanto's best. Cyrus didn't appreciate the gesture, though. The air was too musky, the sun was too bright; it felt like the world's spotlight was being casted onto his ship, and on his shoulders.

This was never the plan. Life was meant to remain placid and simple, like chapters from a book he's ran through more than a hundred times. The thrills were meant to be predictable, as was the victories that came from them. But then his assignment came in the mail, and reality became a new chapter to a new book from a genre he hardly ever consider before.
[Break][break]
Drumming his fingers along his thigh, he was waiting by the ship's maw, his luggage already slung over his shoulder. They were to dock any second now, meaning the other grunts and doctors would be storming the entrances soon, leaving little time and space for his exit. So he wanted to be the first to leave. [Break][break]

The irony of his plan wasn't lost to him. It slid across the back of teeth as he departed the metal cavarn. On the dock, a familiar face awaited.

He had seen him before. It was hard not to, considering his consistent visits to Rocket's stronghold.

Cyrus' body tensed at the suggestion. He could already smell the rank stench of alcohol. It burned, the imagery a passageway to a past he wasn't prepared to touch.

"I'd prefer it if we stuck to Coffee."

So busied dismissing the light tease, he hadn't realized his own acceptance to idea of traveling together. It wasn't until a breath later, while shuffling between papers, that his movement slowed, and embarrassment crept through his twitching fingers.

It wasn't like he wanted to travel alone. But it was easier. There was no room for awkward conversation or opportunities to expose too much too soon. It was the way he'd always conducted his business within Rocket.

At Desmond question, which came out of nowhere and startled the man, forcing his shoulders to rise slightly in response, Cyrus' hand glided over to the golden locket situated at the end of the case. He pocketed it quickly, dropping it into the pocket of his lab coat.

"Important homework," he corrected, "I've read too many horror stories to let the movers handle everything."

Aurora, much like Team Rocket, didn't care for comfort. Without Desmond's side of the bargain, she would've found herself laying in the exact same position, with the exact same level of oblivious audacity, waiting for a calloused hand to stroke her mane. Luckily, he caught on quick. So after a few sufficient pets, the fox-like pokemon let out a quiet trill and removed herself from the couch, finding the hunk of space next to Cyrus all-the-more desirable.

In meantime, Cyrus had found himself shuffling between the cabinets of his new, shabby desk, the brief case he'd been carrying laid wide open and within his reach. Upon closer examination, either Aurora or Desmond would find a mixture of mundane medical reports and gadgets strung with gold. It was an odd concoction, but so was he.
