get over it still. her boyfriend was on the news. rhian's on her fourth or fifth re-read of the hoenn news article online, blindly following after the young man in question.

"hehe it's like you're a celebrity now, leo," rhian giggles despite herself on her way to answer the backup signal. she glances up to compare the photo they'd taken of her beloved physicist versus the real deal— yup, the real leo is way grumpier.

it isn't until they reach the crash site (if one could even call it that; it actually looks more like a slumbering site) that rhian takes in the

gravity

of this invasion. pun intended. vegetation is dying all around it, replaced by extraterrestrial vines that remind her of the thorns surrounding sleeping beauty's castle.

"she looks like she's sleeping," she mutters under her breath.

[break][break]

were they all supposed to save the sleeping beauty, or were they going to be the ones ultimately succumbing to eternal slumber?

[break][break]

the message from leo's alakazam brings her back from her daydream. she blinks. a nod and her sylveon is called out from the comfort of her pokéball. "princess, please lend them both a hand."

rhian's pokémon may not know the move requested, but the sylveon would at least try to lend some of her mental strength with

helping hand

. the ribbons on her head flutter as she concentrates on the alakazam's and lickilicky's goal.

she turns to the behemoth in front of them. it takes a moment for her eyes to process the blinding light coming from its two appendages. even then, she's forced to avert them upwards, towards the rest of the long cylinders. nope, still too bright.

"i can't see anything from how bright it is! cherub, can you do something about it?"

the blissey raises both of her pink arms and immediately a

light screen

appears before her, @leonardo, and a small group of league officials standing not too far away. the glass-like screen is opaque, but whether or not it would be enough to shield their eyes remains to be seen.

her slurpuff

friend is not the only one that the durian mochi lures to them. a lilligant —perhaps the same one from before, perhaps not— waddles over for a taste of the delicious-looking, disgusting-smelling treat.

rhian blinks. "what a surprise. with how smelly the mochi is, i really didn't expect anyone but slurpuff to come."

the flower lady reaches up for the sweet. it seems to really want it. and so does her returning slurpuff.

rhian looks down at the two pokémon and feels her heart break. she couldn't possibly pick between each set of baby-doll eyes.

lips pucker into a queasy pout. she couldn't just give the entire mochi to her slurpuff, even if she was meant to be the original recipient of it. she pushes down on the gelatinous dessert until it breaks off in two. "hey, why don't we split?"

but wait. she couldn't tell the slurpuff she had no rights above those of a wild pokémon not even in their team, either.

"pretty flower lady, i think you're obligated by safari zone laws to join us now."

this time, the last of her safari balls would be put to use. rhian extends her hand.

her head at those words. she's been caught offering more treats to new friends, that much she can tell. with him being the one paying, she can understand why the thought would be alarming. however, what did her nono have to do with this?

her answer comes so naturally it's clear she hasn't thought things through, hasn't stopped to consider how leo may be feeling about it.

before she can ask, a small scaly pokémon surprises her from behind. it's there for only a fraction of a second before it rushes off to leo. rhian giggles. standing side by side, the similarities in their expressions are undeniable. the little pokémon has the same tired frown that leo does.

"it seems to like you, leo. ooh, we should bring it with us, too!" in her biased mind, it's a perfect plan. then rhian would get to dress both of them up and take adorable pictures for the new scrapbook she bought only the day before. she really wants it to happen.

there's a cave

at the base of the hill that looks pretty inviting. rhian pokes her head in and so does her newly befriended sylveon. almost simultaneously, both recoil back the way they came at what they find inside.

it's not a bad sight, per se. the cave appears to be the home of a swoobat. the only thing odd about it is that it's rampaging around the cave, trying to stamp as many hearts as it possibly could on the walls. no doubt it would go for them as soon as it saw them.

"let's get going, yeah?" she proposes. the sylveon has no complaints.

the slurpuff? well, that's a good question. rhian seems to have lost her somewhere along the way.

[break][break]

"slurpuff?" she calls in a whisper, careful not to attract the attention of the swoobat. "where are you, girl?" she... couldn't have gone inside the cave while she and the sylveon exited it, right? oh dear.

rhian has a better idea to guide the slurpuff back to them. out of all the sweets she'd brought today, there is one in particular that is wrapped up in a thick layer of plastic. its odor is pretty strong, so rhian really only brought it on a just-in-case basis. that just-in-case happened to be now.

the durian mochi is unwrapped. she waits.

it feels like

a dream. like she and leo have been hand-picked by a power greater than either of them and then placed in the watercolor pages of a fairy tale book, where she is the bashful princess and he the charming prince.

the movie moment lasts only a few seconds, but rhian would be feeling like the protagonist of her own fantasy romance for way longer.

"wait— you only get to eat the tahini-covered ones until thursday though!"

he's already gone.

rhian looks back at her cooking station and sighs. leo most likely fled from helping her clean up more than anything else. she opens the microwave to start melting leo's chocolate.

the molds wait for her beside the mixer, and after that she still needs to prepare the cocoa powder until it reaches a deep red that could be sprinkled on top of the chocolate cover. not to mention the miniature marshmallows to adorn the batch made exclusively for leo.

somehow, leo had managed to help her and still slow down her progress. she has a long day ahead of her. but that's alright; reminiscing the short moment shared in this kitchen makes her work more happily.

when no

angry outbursts or screams come, rhian braves herself to venture a quick peek at leo's face. he's surprisingly calm. light-colored eyelashes blink a couple times to make sure her brain's not making this up. he's really... not angry with her?

rhian realizes she's only seen him mad once, and that day she'd watched her cousin come home with a bruised eye and a broken nose.

her hands instinctively reach for her nose. she really likes her nose.

she lowers them. "you're getting your own chocolate, of course!" for anyone to even think leo wouldn't be getting valentine's chocolates from his loving girlfriend, they'd have to be delusional. "fifty percent cacao, just how you like it."

the heart-shaped mold is put aside. rhian approaches. she wraps leo in a tight hug, and in that deadly sweet grip, her lips brush against his cheek. a gentle kiss, as gentle as the touch of a butterfly. it's a romantic moment ruined only if you decide to look at her tiptoeing feet.

burrowing her face in his chest, rhian adds in a whisper, "are you mad at me?"

. the smile is fleeting, but definitely there. bright, warm. it's the smile of a man who really cares for his pokémon. rhian can't help smiling back. "that fits you."

at the man's new question, rhian tilts her head. "hm? not really." she stops to ponder for a minute, realizing such an answer may not be the most satisfying. "i'm not much of a trainer, to be honest. cher and i are just on our way to visit the couple i mentioned earlier."

from this point, she lets her mind wander. hands crossed behind her back, she tells him of her last capture. "the last time i caught a pokémon was, i think, in a lake near fortree. a swarm of milotic gave the crowd of trainers there such a beautiful performance that night!"

her eyes turn to his, searching for a hint that he may understand the feelings the view had brought. there were many people gathered there that night; perhaps he'd even been one of them.

a meowl demands her attention somewhere ahead. a big lavender-colored persian looks intently at them before running off into the tall grass.

"you must be a great trainer, though," she adds casually, gaze now fixed on the path ahead. "all your pokémon look so strong and brave. are you perhaps a competitive trainer?"

studying mechatronics engineering, but that has nothing to do with her knowledge of kitchen appliances. what did leo think that her classes consisted of? baking lessons at the local lab?

having also attended lilycove university, leo probably knew about the community kitchens in campus, but rhian's time in their alma mater was not spent there despite what the young man thought.

"my studies have nothing to do with this," she declares, unwrapping a long sheet of parchment paper. once it's lined neatly on the table, she sets off to look for some chocolate molds.

her next words are a careless mistake. "hearts? are you sure that'll be fine?"

oh no, she's about to get caught.

"u-um. sure, you can have a taste! but only a taste, 'kay? these may have higher nutritious value, but they're still chocolates."

the nervous laughter at the end doesn't help. she gives in. "i'm actually making these for mr. lane and everyone else at the research facility."

she looks down, feeling guilty about keeping that information from him for this long. rhian should have just told leo she was making chocolates for Lucas Lane and cait alfric straight away.

. despite the scale looking brand new, leo manages to operate it as if he'd done it a thousand times. or maybe the steps are just so simple that it would take someone really technologically challenged to not figure it out.

regardless, rhian is happy. that was the largest of her concerns and, as you can see, she'd never been all that good at conversions.

"whaaat? since when do we have this magical piece of electronics?"

rhian ogles the metallic platform. the almonds are dropped on the recipient one by one until the screen marks two hundred— two hundred and one. they go into the mixer.

the pistachios are next. "here," rhian picks up the cup and offers a handful of the green seeds to leo before following the same process and dumping them with the almonds. dates, maple syrup, tahini and cocoa powder are mixed in while she prepares the table for the hands-on part.

a small dedenne sneaking around while leo busies himself with the fossil pokémon and decides to follow it, both questions hanging in the air until they're each done with their small individual adventures.

"are you looking for berries all the way up here?" she asks the small rodent. it's cheeks are so big they look like they're overflowing. rhian can hear herself squeal internally at how cute it is.

that said, there's something odd about this dedenne in particular. one of its cheeks looks bigger than the other, which in itself is a pretty huge feat. both are so huge already. rhian tilts her head, intrigued.

the mystery is solved when the dedenne opens its mouth and presents the berry it had hidden inside to rhian.

[break][break]

"oh no, don't worry about me, i'm fine." she shakes her head and waves her hands to emphasize she didn't need the treat. "please go ahead and eat it." after all, she has her doubts about a dedenne's saliva doing well in her own digestive system.

"my boyfriend promised to take me to this super nice restaurant after this. the pinap shortcakes there are sooo fluffy, you should check them out," rhian happily continues.

another idea. "actually, don't you wanna come with us too? it'll be fun!"

since the money wouldn't be coming out of her pocket, rhian has no trouble offering the dedenne a pokéball of its own.
