silence. vera doesn't like silence. it reminds her of her father's house and of a childhood spent alone. it reminds her of life before alric. so, as she's done countless times before, vera opts to fill the silence with mindless chatter.

"do you come down here often?" she asks. for some reason, vera can actually imagine leonardo scaring away multiple trainers just the way he'd scared her when they met. as far as her own experience goes... "it's my first time in new mauville and i have to admit it's a lot darker and emptier than i expected."

vera's mental picture of new mauville used to be one of postmodern architecture and luxury. fancier even than mauville hills. it's no wonder, too: last time she heard of new mauville, it was an ambitious real estate project where her father had obviously pre-purchased a property.

years later—today, that investment could only be considered uncollectible debt.

"i do like the new mauville, though. a lot more fresh air up there." at least, the indoor city has more fresh air circulating in it than this abandoned one does.

four years can feel like a lifetime at age seventeen. it's exactly 23.53% the years she's lived thus far. a little less, by the time the course is scheduled to start. vera knows this course is what she's always wanted, ever since she was little and her entire world was reduced to an absent father and making mud cakes in mauville's—old mauville's—green pastures.

"four years away from my prince..." she whispers under her breath, to herself rather than to the alolan raichu accompanying her on this walk. vera's feet come to a halt in a clearing, right before a tree stump, and so too does the raichu.

around them, a ring of mushrooms is shaped in a circle, so perfect they look carefully, deliberately planted. but what catches vera's attention the most is not the suspicious way in which those mushrooms grow. it is what hides behind the tree stump that does.

the first spot of unearthed dirt is already worrisome. it prefaces the appearance of a second and a third and vera is in the middle of issuing instructions to her pokémon when she feels the light tremor of a tunnel being dug up right under her feet.

"guys, now!" she calls her pokémon to act.

vera's heat rotom is already by the nearest burrow. with its ability to

levitate

, the tremor would have had no effect on it, allowing it to approach while the drilbur's

earthquake

immobilized its trainer. similarly, vera's oricorio completely bypasses any harm that could have come to her by taking to the air with a jump and a flourish of her pompoms.

having just watered the berry tree saplings only minutes ago, the soil remains humid, so that when the oricorio flaps her wings and summons a

hurricane

meant to push the heat rotom's

overheat

down the underground tunnels, the heat is overbearing enough to force the drilbur out without making it faint.

now it's only a matter of figuring out from which hole it would come out. luckily vera has enough hands to cover every hole already created by the drilbur, and then some. "everyone, to your positions."

with rotom, oricorio, raichu, heliolisk, eevee, ampharos and vera herself all lined up and alert, the gasping drilbur has little chance of escape. its drowsy body soon takes on a light red hue as it's encapsuled inside a pokéball.

speechless. the persona she's tried so hard to get into blurs in that moment with the real vera. she watches with authentic awe that she hopes will come off as the character being taken aback. looking down, she takes an unscripted moment to recover from the surprise of such a good performance.

vera's hand runs through her hair, uncharacteristically down just for the role. "you say that as if i could have done anything to prevent it. you know better than anyone how stubborn she can be." her voice is shaky, not as a result of good acting skills but because it's hard for her to say these words. once upon a time, the one getting drunk beyond recognition was vera herself.

she turns to buck now, looks for the blue in his eyes to show that what she was about to say was true. "grace isn't happy." a pause, dramatic in its own right. "james is a good guy and i'm sure he loves her as much as she claims to love him back, but..." vera's breath catches in her throat. she's forgotten the next lines!

a light tremble but she's back on her feet. vera just hopes buck won't mind her improvising now. "i haven't seen her smile the way she used to when she was with you."

vera doesn't know if her "best friend" really thought he was her current boyfriend or if she never got over the last. the script doesn't specify at any point, and that allows some room for interpretation, allows vera to unconsciously weave the discourse she believes in into the narration.

after the carnivine, brownie supposes the luxio counts as an okay playmate. even if its mane has grown all ugly ("it still has more to grow," vera reminds him) and he's stolen his trainer's attention from him. at least the luxio didn't steal one of brownie's paper boats, the way the carnivine had— nevermind.

. those are paper boats he folded. well, vera folded them and he pressed his paws to seal the deal. that already counts as it being brownie himself the one who folded them, right?

either way, he's not happy and he makes sure that the luxio can tell as much. tilting his head in question communicates that he doesn't understand. vera does, though. she purses her lips and pets the luxio on the head. "do you wanna check out your new room, baby?" she prompts him inside the pokéball with an encouraging smile.

the rest of the afternoon passes by quietly. peacefully. they don't stay outside for long.

"bonbon!" vera exclaims. the signals the oricorio receives at its sneaky trick would be misleading: her trainer is reprimanding her for cheating, yet laughing at the same time. the wind picks up and makes the boat go faster. "you're such a cheat," she complains, though she's far from angry.

the one who's not so happy about the unfair advantage is brownie, the eevee. he jumps up and down, pretty much barking at the oricorio. vera intervenes by picking him up. in her arms, the eevee relaxes. he forgets, for a whole twenty seconds, that he's been cheated out of a first place his trainer would have given up to him simply because she loves him that much.

vera, amused; bonbon, teasing; brownie, mad. the dynamic is still kept that way when the grass pokémon makes its entrance. it floats easily and silently, somehow, across the pond. vera and her pokémon don't see it coming until after it's opened its mouth and taken one of their paper boats inside.

"hey, that's rude!" she starts, but even then it's already too late. the paper boat is now inside the carnivine's odd-shaped belly. brownie wants to jump at the offending pokémon, ready to fight it if need be, but vera stops him. her hold is tight. she turns to the eevee. "let it go, brownie. we have plenty more."

it may be saturday morning and by all means too early to be awake, but vera has a job to do today in mauville city (or rather below it, in new mauville) and that job requires that she be early. so the woman wakes up even earlier to leave breakfast already prepared for her girlfriend, as well as her rotom to help heat up said food whenever @alric woke up; and makes her way from lilycove to mauville atop her vikavolt.

pretzel is so fast the trip feels like a blur. however, if vera thought she'd be the first to arrive, she would be wrong. she is wrong.

the younger scientist is waiting for her outside new mauville. he's accompanied by a rotom, a pokémon she did not know he owned. she makes note but does not comment on this finding. leonardo did always come off to her as a guy of good taste in pokémon. besides, it's not like she could introduce it to her own, given that she left hers back home.

she smiles, but does not go in for a handshake. her feet stop a meter or so from him. "so we meet again."

the joltik pokes its tiny head out from tall grass to stare at them for a good few seconds before continuing on its merry way. the electric spider's so small and its feet so light that it manages to skim through the water's surface as if it were no different than solid.

"that's new," she comments, genuinely surprised by the joltik's feat. "we should ask wafer if she can do that too, don't you think?" a smile is sent the eevee's way before she releases a second of her pokémon.

"we're having a paper boat race, bonbon. wanna join?"

they have a paper boat ready for the oricorio to use if she wishes. it wouldn't have been handmade for the bird, but the gust of wind that pushes the pond water into a light current is very much her doing. the fact that her boat goes faster is also her doing.

last friday, vera had caught brownie sitting on the couch watching a show on tv that explained paper boat racing. vera took a break from washing dishes to watch the documentary with the eevee, whose captivated expression was more than enough to bring a smile to his trainer's face.

"let's have our own race," she'd promised the eevee, cuddling it close, and have their own race they would do.

there is a little pond just outside petalburg city that vera finds to be a good stage for this little race of theirs. they make the paper boats back home and bring a good stack (for the extra chances) to the pond. there is a light breeze but the waters remain mostly still.

"we might need some help, brownie." vera's flying-type pokémon immediately come to mind, but before that the sound of rustling leaves draws her attention from the task at hand. she turns.

vera blinks at leonardo's comment. she's never thought pokémon to be particularly attached to her. she's never thought of her way of approaching wild pokémon as particularly different or outstanding, either. looking down at the alolan graveler, though, it's hard to dismiss the thought.

"do you like me, sweetie? is that so?" she asks the pokémon, her hands reaching down to each side of its face.

looking at it straight in the face proves to be a hard task. the pattern in which the rock on its face compressed over the years makes it look like a grumpy old man with big, bushy eyebrows. an extra pair of lines next to its eyes add on to the illusion, and everything together makes vera giggle.

"i like you too," she decides, nodding in agreement with... herself. she smiles and extends a hand to it. "wanna be friends?"

[break][break]

after placing the alolan graveler inside a pokéball of its own, she turns to leonardo. "my pokémon are all my friends, so i suppose they ought to like me. i'd be worried if they didn't." a minute of silence passes during which vera just watches him. "what's your approach? i do think your garchomp likes you as well."
