strudel's introduction to the sea is nothing like fondue's, though their trainer has a feeling their relationship might be very similar after this little lesson. the pikachu has lost any fear he may have had of the sea, and the splish splash of his feet on the water puts her on alert. the next step would be to warn him of its dangers.

the emolga comes from behind them. an unexpected strike of

acrobatics

leaves a small depression on the sand next to strudel, which sends him jumping to vera's arms.

fondue circles around his young apprentice—at least that's the discourse vera has convinced herself of, that all the pichus and pikachus that have joined her team after him are all his apprentices. the alolan raichu's tail sinks into the sand, making him halt right next to the emolga. the smaller rodent's exit is thus blocked.

"that was a close one," vera starts, her hand petting the pikachu in a way that would hopefully soothe him. the poor thing. "you really gave strudel a fright, you know."

the ginger turns to the emolga. her emerald eyes bore into the flying squirrel's. "if you wanted to play with us, you should have said so. introduced yourself, extended a paw. getting into fights is no way to make new friends, darling."

a finger is brought to her chin, pensive, as she closes one eye. "but i guess it might just have worked for you. were you lonely out there?" vera smiles, shrugging the offense off. after the reprimanding the it had gotten, the emolga seemed to be willing to behave, and that was enough for vera to work with.

when vera chose to bring the pikachu to the party, she did not realize he was this good at dancing. the nightlife in oldale town, where she had found him, must have been pretty active, because she's certain she'd never taught the pikachu these moves. now it almost feels like a waste to evolve him.

the pinap colada she'd only just brought to her lips for the first time is set aside on the bar. her hand stretches out to her girlfriend in invitation. "we can't let strudel keep all the fun to himself. let's go, alric!"

while the pikachu is entranced by the endless sea, fondue gives the crashing waves a longing look. he's itching to go in, taste the waves and the water, but he knows this is no place for it and so he waits. his time would come soon, but it would not be today.

vera follows both her pokémon's gazes. "it is beautiful, isn't it?"

she takes a step forward, to where the dying waves can lick at her toes. kneeling down, she prompts, "come, strudel, put your paw here." vera places her hand on the wet sand, warmed up by the sun and later cooled down by the sea.

strudel does as requested, a wary yet curious look on his face. he places his paw on top of vera's hand, and squeals when a new wave comes crashing against them. vera is quick to grab the pikachu's body protectively. "it's alright, strudel. see?" she soothes.

the pikachu does see it. the two sets of rocks placed before them halts the bigger, scarier waves, allowing only withered down versions to reach the shore. he relaxes. a floatzel stops in its tracks for a second a few feet in to watch them, before moving on.

it's so early in the morning the sun hasn't even risen yet, which also means the shore is empty—not because there are no other early birds around, but because all of them are setting sail in other, safer shores. no sane person would be coming here to surf. to the reader's relief, and despite her longsleeved swimsuit, neither is vera.

"what do you think about this place, fondue?"

the alolan raichu doesn't reply, but he wiggles his tail as if in approval. pleased with what they've found. vera nods and a pokéball opens to reveal a pikachu. "good morning, strudel," she greets, petting the pikachu's head affectionately.

today, they're teaching the pikachu how to swim. although, judging by the way he's staring at the mass of water, they might be teaching him more than just swimming.

vera crouches down next to the pikachu. "is this your first time looking at the sea?"

kalosian is an accent vera had never been in direct contact with, despite having spent years in the neighboring galar, so it would be easy for bucky to fool her. perhaps it was fate that dictated that all the kalosian students she'd met in her alma mater could show off english diction parallel to a native's, simply so that he could pull off this stunt.

or perhaps the university only accepted applicants with perfect english. regardless, the time taken to question the veracity of the man's claim would come close to zero.

vera lets out an impressed "ooh," as she takes the hand offered to her. "i'm just a plain old native," she admits, arms shrugging it off as if nothing. boring. "kalos is pretty far, what made you come all the way here? was it for an acting career? just for this audition, maybe?"

now, vera's friend hadn't told her all the details about the studio that had called for this audition. they could be auditioning for big names or an indie movie and vera would be none the wiser, which is why she sees nothing wrong in her question.

acting, performing, the entire showbiz had never been in vera's skillset. as a kid, she'd entertained the idea; during her teenage years, she imagined what the news would have to say about the power couple made up by a novelist—her girlfriend—and an actress.

it had never been a serious aspiration of hers. even today, the ginger is only in this waiting room to accompany a friend, who had been so nervous about the auditions that she somehow managed to convince vera to take them with her.

as she waits for said friend to come back from the restroom, vera thinks that she really should think things through before accepting to carry out these favors.

that's how the haunter finds vera: alone, worried, turning her face towards the door every few seconds. the feeling of being watched doesn't go unnoticed, even if vera can't tell why and by whom until the ghost's owner approaches.

"please," she says, reaching a hand out to stop the man from forcing his pokémon back into its pokéball. she's too late, and the hand hangs in the air awkwardly for a moment until a short spring of bubbly laughter breaks out, laughing the entire matter off. "don't worry about it."

vera smiles, the foreign accent piquing her interest. they still got time, as another girl was just called; a little chitchat wouldn't hurt. "where are you from?"

genuine worry washes over her body at leonardo's first impression after her tale. normally, she wouldn't worry too much about taking newly met people as confidantes for trivial details like what playing music after her boss left the lab should be, and yet this time it's not so trivial because the young man literally works in the lab nextdoors.

just as soon as it came, it passes. the sigh that escapes her lips is too long for the amount of time she kept the air in her lungs.

"a-ha is a classic, but i'll admit i'm more fond of more recent music. ambient, new-age, electropop..." vera turns to him, a finger resting against her lips as if to shush him, the would-be threat of telling on her gone and a joke placed in its stead. "don't tell the others."

when she turns her eyes ahead, vera sees something she hadn't been expecting.

"what are you doing out of your pokéball already, girl? were you hungry? did you want another berry bar?" the woman relinquishes the treat easily, petting the pokémon and pressing the button of a pokéball to allow her in, oblivious to the fact that this flaaffy was indeed a different flaaffy from the one she'd befriended earlier.

the warmth of alric's body arrives suddenly and leaves too soon. vera can feel every drop of disappointment in the lingering ghost of her girlfriend's touch, even if it had been through the fabric of her blouse.

"that's so unfair!" she whines, a big pout forming on her lips. though their relationship is far from purely physical, the young chemist is certain that their individual types of serotonin are so perfectly matched that she couldn't not relish in the intimacy of every hug and cuddle.

the thought, at least, mellows her. she could always demand all the cuddles she wanted later at night. it serves as her comfort while vera moves from miltank to miltank.

biscuit comes out his pokéball already guessing what the task his trainer would ask of him would be. it's not the first time he's had to fill in as alric's makeshift parasol, and it wouldn't be the last. while alric shares her suggestion, he extends the frills around his neck and positions himself to cover her from the sun.

"that's an amazing idea, actually," vera answers with a smile. if she closed her eyes, she could imagine the warm kiss of a setting sun's rays, the comfortable shade of tall trees, the relaxing chirping of birds in the wild. then, she reopens her eyes. "but are you sure you can handle hiking up a mountain? we could just watch the sunset from home."

"the boys have to wait 'til our boss leaves the lab before they can play a-ha," she laughs, amused and mortified all at the same time. she always thought the walls were thicker than this. seems not. hopefully nobody at leonardo's lab hated them for it. "is it that loud?"

vera smiles when the garchomp sits down next to her new babies. the dragon may be huge and intimidating compared to the electric types, but sitting down like that it seemed as amiable as any other. "what's his name?" she asks, before turning to the pokémon leonardo was already pointing her to.

this time, the ginger doesn't have to do much in terms of convincing the pokémon to come with her. it knows the minun she'd found only moments ago. they seem to be really close friends, too—maybe even a couple, judging by the sweet, intimate

nuzzle

shared.

when the minun offers half its berry bar to the plusle, vera gives them one more to even the numbers, and that seems enough for the plusle to decide she's a nice human.

"okay, guys, it's getting a little cramped in here, so let's get you all inside some real comfy pokéballs until we go someplace more spacious, yeah?"

she presents three pokéballs for the three new members of her team.

the alolan raichu takes a wild turn after surfing past a rock. his trainer follows behind, slower but never losing sight of the pokémon. they all come to a sudden stop at the whirring sound that comes from ahead. "what on earth?"

throughout her life, vera had seen many strange things. a magnezone coming to the sea for a swim was pretty high up in the list, but it doesn't get the crown.

vera blinks, confusion clear on her face. after a moment of the magnezone moving nothing but its red eye, she tries to approach it. her hands are wet from being literally in the water and that makes touching the electric type a bad idea. then again, vera's full of bad ideas.

[break][break]

"it'll be fine," she answers her alolan raichu's non-verbal warning. "it won't hurt us, right?" she adds, looking at the magnezone now. her hand caresses the cold, smooth metal. "what are you doing all the way out here, sweetie? did you get lost?"

the magnezone can't really answer her in any way that could be explicative enough of its circumstances, but that doesn't stop vera from trying.

"that sounds like you're on a self-exploratory journey. mind if we tag along?"

[break][break]

vera smiles. she can't produce a pokéball for the magnezone at the moment, having left her bag and all her belongings on firm ground, but the promise of one would be fulfilled when they got back.
