Orion watches quietly as Josh interacts with his son, encouraging him with his cheers. It's sweet. He doesn't know a lot of people with kids, doesn't often get to see them interacting with those kids besides, but Josh is the sort of father Orion wishes his own had been.

Pushing that rather unpleasant thought aside, he gets the attention of the booth attendant with a silent wave of his hand, gesturing at the father-son duo as Josh helped Zachary to release the Magikarp back into the pond.

"Looks like we have a winner!" the attendant cries; his enthusiasm no doubt forced, but convincing enough. To Josh, the man asks, "Would the little guy like to pick out a prize?"

The prizes for hooking a golden fish were the most extravagant, of course, but off to the side there were an array of smaller ones for those who'd hooked a regular old 'karp. Mostly themed around the fish themselves, of course. The Gyarados plushie for hooking a gold fish took up half the stall.

Orion can't help but to wince under her withering gaze; had he done something to upset her? His mind races to calculate potential outcomes of their past interactions: she hadn't seemed upset with him during the raid, focused more on the argument he'd missed, but perhaps that had been the problem? Had she expected him to do more? That was ridiculous, they hardly knew each other.

His stomach crawls into his throat, but he swallows it down before formulating a response.

She's turned away from him, now, won't see him opening and closing his mouth like a fish out of water as he tries to work up the courage to try again. He can fake competence and confidence in the public eye, but privately his insecurities are palpable.

Her curse catches him off-guard. He closes his mouth again, and this time does not reopen it until he's fully processed the situation.

It feels less targeted at him, now, which only leaves him more confused.

"Making it kind of hard not to worry," he points out, his laughter weak and echoing through the helmet. In spite of the jest, his nerves are like live wires: they spark with every word.

He's not sure whether to be flattered or terrified by the implication of her words. He plays it off with laughter, sweat beading on the back of his neck.

"Good things, I hope."

The Ekans catches his attention, its beady yellow eyes fixed upon him. It might have unsettled anyone else, but Orion merely smiles at the coiled creature.

Kaida, it seemed, had about as much information on their targets as he did. He'd braced himself for such an outcome, and disappointment is minimal. This wasn't exactly a priority job for the Rangers, after all: the couple had been more than happy to take what they could get, lest they lose their business to inaction.

Her (likely rhetorical) question startles a laugh out of the councilman.

"Not a clue. Your idea doesn't sound half bad, though; I'll get my Pokemon to spar, see if it spurs them on a little."

A sharp whistle draws the attention of the power couple; Nidoking is more responsive, having been with Orion longer, while his Nidoqueen spares him a lazy glance as if loosely considering obedience.

"Time to show off, you two. 'king, Poison Jab. 'Queen, Body Slam!"

Their clash shakes the earth, Nidoqueen's powerful slam managing to unbalance her mate before he regains his footing and jabs his horn at her chest. They make a dramatic show of it, growling and stomping, and Orion looks over at Kaida with a shrug. Maybe...?

Fernando, too, is less composed than when Orion saw him last. The annoyance that sharpens his tone might have intimidated Orion under other circumstances, but forcibly dulled emotions lend well to reasoning: it's not directed at him.

"Which they don't," Orion finishes, rubbing at his temple. "I'm willing to bet it'll be all over the morning news no matter what Olivia said to them."

Though they've never had a formal introduction, Orion's quick to form opinions about the councilwoman based on the events during and after the attack. Schwartz, as well. His opinions of Kyle are, at least, tempered by the fact that he'd actually spent time with the man prior to tonight.

"You have an idea of what to tell them?" he asks, curious. "Silence'll no doubt just point them to conspiracy and cover-ups."

People loved to think that the government was up to something nefarious. Giving them fuel for that fire would only do more harm.

Adrenaline fades in the aftermath of the battle, and with it goes Orion's steely resolve: the only thing that's been keeping him stable. It's the first real tragedy he's ever been a part of. He's heard of them — Mossdeep, Slateport, tragedies that dominated the news — but to experience it...

It's almost too much.

He'd slipped away from the crowd gathered around the portal and now walked the battlefield, rubble crunching underfoot. He checked his phone for the first time post-battle to see alerts pouring in from the rangers: all available were to report to Slateport. He could see a few of them now, those with the fastest methods of transport already combing the wreckage for survivors. Orion goes through similar motions mechanically, feels his mind closing off from the overwhelming emotions that threaten to suffocate.

He could break down later. For now...

His ear's definitely busted. He needs to see a doctor. He needs to go to a Pokemon Center, for Schism. He needs to figure out what the deal was with the argument back at the portal.

He spots Fernando, winces at the reminder of Olivia and Balder's fallout. Nevertheless, he approaches.

"Media's swarming like flies." Not much of a greeting, but it's hardly time for small talk. "Arceus, what a mess."

Orion almost doesn't see the Budew in his path, small as it was. It's the scattering of life dew that alerts him to the little bud's presence, and he's jolted uncomfortably back to the night of the new year.

Droplets had fallen like rain over a charred and broken battlefield. He still has nightmares about it.

It's Altair who jolts him out of it, the gentle tap of the Braixen's branch against his arm. He glances at his Pokemon in surprise, sees something like understanding in its gaze. His lip twitches, and he nods.

"Let me move you off of the path, little buddy..."

He relocates the Budew to a small pond a little ways off, not wanting the dual-type to get stepped on as it almost had.

To say that Orion had accepted this job begrudgingly would be an understatement: he was no breeder, how the heck was he supposed to know how to get Pokemon to like each other? But the ranch owners had seemed desperate, so... here he was, wrinkling his nose at the scent of manure as he lets himself in through the gate.

There's a girl already there, and he sticks out a hand.

"You must be Kaida. Orion Lykos."

He hesitates on saying anything more. Did she know who he was already? He had gained some renown with the rangers, but would it be presumptuous to assume that his name was a familiar one? Probably. His throat constricts at the thought.

"I'm a ranger, too," he says, after a beat. "Looks like we're partnered up for this one. You know anything about Pangoro mating habits? I did some research before coming out, but, uh, to be honest almost any experience beats Dr. Google."

Shrugging, he releases two Pokemon from their capsules to act as guardians: his own mated pair of a Nidoking and Nidoqueen. He certainly hadn't needed to do anything special for them to decide they liked one another, but he could tell just by looking at the ornery pandas that he and Kaida wouldn't be so lucky today.

Orion stands on the deck of the boat, one hand resting light on his Swampert's purple flank. Apart from a shift in his colouration, the swamp fish seemed to have made a full recovery from the New Years Incident... but he couldn't help but feel concern for his partner. Pokemon had died during the assault. His Swampert could have been one of them.

Schism lets out a low grumble, seemingly annoyed at Orion's mothering. It prompts a soft smile.

Orion palms his Lanturn's pokeball, prepared to send it out as soon as they've dove deep enough to need the extra light. Outfitted in diving gear, he glances over at Stormy when the boat comes to a rough stop among the tossing waves. They've got no idea what they might find down there. She doesn't seem pleased, and he cants his head.

"You need a minute?"

The words are soft, edged with kindness. He doesn't know her well enough to pry into the reasoning for her sour attitude, but he's familiar enough to care about her well-being.

Orion doesn't know Mateo well. They've only spoken on a few occasions. But he likes the other man, admires his positive energy. To watch as the grasping tentacle ensnares him and pulls him into the portal... there aren't words to describe the horror that wrenches in his gut. Thomas screams Mateo's name, a desperate yell that the councilman hears in only one ear.

The world spins and he fights to keep the contents of his stomach, brow damp with sweat.

Thomas slips off the Hydreigon without a word. When Orion makes to follow him, his ruptured eardrum betrays him: he loses his balance and stumbles, falls, registers sharp rubble piercing his palms as he coughs up bile.

In the aftermath, his composure shatters. He's trembling all over, stomach heaving. Blood slides down his jaw, draining from his damaged ear.

Nidhogg is not a compassionate creature, but it is loyal. The three-headed dragon hovers next to his trainer, snarling at any that deign to come close. When his heaving stomach produces nothing more than a pain in his ribs, Orion uses the dragon as support to help him stand. He longs for the companionship of his long-time partners, his Absol or Espeon, but an instinctive pat of his pokeball belt reminds him of their absence.

Arceus, he's so disoriented. It's difficult to walk straight, but he tries his best.

When he manages his way over to the portal, desperate for closure on what had happened with the portal, he spots familiar faces in a seemingly furious crowd. It's clear he's wandered into some sort of argument, and his social anxiety spikes.

Fernando is there, too, demanding answers. Orion's relieved by the authoritative presence: it means he can focus on standing straight and not vomiting.

"You all right?" Orion asks quietly of Annie, turning a sympathetic gaze on the kid who's way too young to be dealing with any of this shit. But he knows her, and he knows it's not her first tragedy. "Did your Pokemon... are they...?"

Orion's always liked cats. His Liepard wasn't much for the ranger lifestyle, but where he'd normally find a more suitable home for such a Pokemon, he was content to keep her around as a housecat. She liked to steal all of his spots: his favourite armchair, his pillow, his seat out of the four dining chairs...

So when he spots a Meowstic, male according to its colouring, his smile is gentle.

"Hey, buddy."

It purrs and approaches the trio, extending its paw as if it's offering to shake. Orion's quietly delighted, more than willing to comply... but the Meowstic fakes him out at the last second, snatching its paw back and covering its mouth with a snicker.

It was a bit of a prankster, apparently.

He's not upset, laughing along with the psychic feline. "Ah, you got me."

It seems to take a liking to him, and the casual way that he'd dealt with its harmless fun. It follows them when they set off down the path once more, and when he offers it one of the four safari balls he'd been given, it takes it delicately in its paws.
