Rather than calling for his Silvally to switch out, as might be expected, the command alerts the chimera to swing its great head toward Orion expectantly. A disc pinched between two fingers is thrown toward his ace, the POISON MEMORY shifting Perseus' crest to a deep purple hue.[break][break]

It wouldn't help with type-effectiveness, but it would at least avoid that nasty TOXIC.[break][break]

The bone-headed bird begins to glow with harsh light, its vortex swirling with a triad of colour from a TRI-ATTACK fired by the snarling Silvally.[break][break]

Ever, thankfully, seemed to have the Leavanny handled.

Orion nods, not bothering with a verbal response. ever blackwell was not the first, nor would he be the last Ranger Orion would hear express such a sentiment. Their mission was to protect Pokémon and to preserve their natural habitats, after all.[break][break]

Most Pokémon enjoyed battling, but Orion's own Absol has always disliked it. They never battle for sport, only for survival.[break][break]

Perseus, however, was created for battle. The Silvally growls and paws at the ground as they come upon their target, immediately setting up a HEAL BLOCK that imprisons the field.[break][break]

The Oranguru seems unbothered, perhaps even amused as it regards the two Rangers.[break][break]

"Don't suppose you'd just give those Pokémon back?"[break][break]

It tosses the pokeballs, but rather than acquiescing to Orion's request, this is the start of a battle. A LEAVANNY and MANDIBUZZ emerge from containment, looking a little confused. But whatever the Oranguru says to them seems to be enough.[break][break]

The Leavanny sets up a SWORDS DANCE as Mandibuzz spits TOXIC ooze toward Silvally, who narrowly leaps clear.

He's trying not to read too much into this. He crushes easily on people, all too eager to interpret a simple invitation as something more. Insecurities manifest as a desire to feel wanted by someone, anyone, and it certainly wouldn't be a first.[break][break]

But it could also put Caleb in a really awkward position if that's not what he's asking, and Arceus Orion wished his brain would shut up for two damn seconds so that he's not just staring at Caleb like a deer in headlights. If Caleb was interested in hooking up, he might well interpret this the wrong way and think that Orion was horrified by the prospect.[break][break]

Caleb's clarification seems to affirm that, and Orion's blush deepens, this time more from embarrassment than anything else.[break][break]

"That sounds great," he agrees, now entirely unsure if he's hoping it'll be Netflix and chill or just, like, literally watching Netflix and talking the whole time.[break][break]

Caleb was too pretty, and it was incredibly unfair.

How many times has he felt safe with someone? He can count the few on a single, titanium hand. Life has taught him little of safety and far too much of fear and suspicion. And he's tired, so fucking tired of keeping his guard up all the time.[break][break]

So for Caleb, at least this once, he lets it down.[break][break]

"Okay," he agrees, nodding. Then again, flicking his gaze up to meet Caleb's with an affirming, "Okay."[break][break]

Such vulnerability is far more difficult in a public setting, and the back of his neck burns as Caleb's question reminds him as much. Then his entire face burns as the implication, which he'd been too distracted at first to recognize, sets in.[break][break]

He purses his lips, unsure whether to laugh or cry or hide his face.[break][break]

"No, I... we can go somewhere else."[break][break]

He's suddenly way, way too aware of how close they're sitting, and his heart feels as if it might explode from his chest.

The brief lilt of amusement in Orion's ordinarily flat tone suggests that he has.[break][break]

"Cause from what I hear, you're about to."[break][break]

They come upon their target, who wields a pokeball in each hand. Orion's Silvally steps forward with a low growl of challenge.

Like a deer in headlights, Orion stiffens and looks at Caleb with wide eyes as the other circles the table to close the distance between them, but doesn't bolt as his instincts scream at him to do. Instead, he awkwardly shifts to afford Caleb a little more personal space.[break][break]

Of course, Caleb wasn't looking for space.[break][break]

Orion might've been offended by the endearment if not for his brain short-circuiting the moment Caleb reached for him.[break][break]

It's been a while since he's been held by anyone like this. Against his judgement, he breaks down and leans into the touch.[break][break]

"I don't..."[break][break]

Know what I want, is what he wants to say, but the words get tangled behind a stumbling tongue.[break][break]

When he tries again, what comes out is, "I don't hate you."[break][break]

Admitting his own hypocrisy feels more embarrassing than the tears.[break][break]

"I should," he mumbles, acknowledging the contradiction, "but you, uh." He pulls back a little, but not enough to fully separate them. "It's complicated. I don't really know what I'm feeling."[break][break]

But I don't want you to go.

For all he might've seemed to be trying to intimidate the younger Ranger, Orion's intense aura of unapproachability was entirely subconscious.[break][break]

In reality, he's nervous. New people always make him nervous. You never knew what sort you were getting, much less if you could trust them. The first words out of this one's mouth don't give him any inclination one way or the other.[break][break]

The silence as they walk reads to him as awkward, because he reads too much into everything.[break][break]

"You know much about Psychic-types?"[break][break]

Though mostly wanting to break that silence, and not to be alone with his thoughts, it's an important thing to know.[break][break]

For a creature worthy of Frankenstein's laboratory, the Silvally stalks with a particular sort of grace that suggests it's spent many missions as Orion's partner, stepping carefully so as not to frighten off the nearby wildlife.

Clearly it didn't matter that his life was perpetually falling apart; Orion was one of the resident Psychic experts among the Rangers, and so it was to him they'd often turn when something strange was afoot.[break][break]

He almost turns down the job before deciding that he'd rather deal with it himself than be berated if some rookie gets hurt handling something above their pay-grade.[break][break]

Besides, the idea of an Oranguru pretending to be a trainer was kind of hilarious.[break][break]

Orion keeps that thought to himself.[break][break]

His mission partner arrives first, and Orion approaches with a certain wariness. Not just because Blackwell as a surname had a certain ill reputation, but because you never knew who you could trust. He'd learned that the hard way.[break][break]

"You here for the job?"[break][break]

Orion folds his arms, sun gleaming off his titanium prosthetic.[break][break]

At his heels, a chimera stalks.

Caleb Harcourt could've hated Chu-e Choi, for all he cared. He'd still stood by and did nothing as Rocket destroyed lives, families, an entire region. Worse, he'd taken part, thereby condoning everything that Beasts like Choi did.[break][break]

His eyes narrow as Caleb elaborates, doubt swimming in their depths.[break][break]

"So they told you," he growls. "How do you know? And why do you get to decide who's innocent and who's not?"[break][break]

Hypocrisy, thy name is Orion.[break][break]

In spite of his blazing anger, he falters at the quiet words of parting. Against his expectations, his eyes sting with tears. His cheeks flush as he tries to blink them away, averting his gaze from the man across the table.[break][break]

You're one of my only friends.[break][break]

He can't bring himself to say it.[break][break]

Neither can be bring himself to storm off.[break][break]

"I — I don't know," he snaps, still not looking at Caleb as he swipes irritably at his damp cheeks. "We'd still have to see each other at work. Shit's awkward enough as it is."[break][break]

He's grasping for straws, for reasons to stay.

Orion was trying to kill him.[break][break]

It's not as personal as it had been with Chu-e Choi. His anger is fueled not by the fragmented memories of torture but by the pain in his face and the hand around his throat.[break][break]

Yet in a sense, it would be just as satisfying to take the life of someone who would do the same to many others.[break][break]

Shame about the PERISH SONG.[break][break]

Scrambling away, Orion kicks hard against the hand that wraps around his ankle, snarling like a cornered animal. Suddenly there are fingers grasping at his face, sharp barbs cutting against gums. He bites until he tastes blood.[break][break]

There's another taste, too. Bitter. Poison.[break][break]

The weight is pulled from him by a Pokémon. He assumes it to be one of his own, but isn't paying much attention as he rolls over to retch.[break][break]

"Motherfucker," is growled as the SCATTERBANGS pop in the air. He gestures wildly at his Pokémon. "Go after him."[break][break]

But Decidueye can't see, and his Absol wars with sticky residue chaining its paws to the ground.[break][break]

Gagging, spitting another glob of blood, Orion reaches for his comms.[break][break]

"Lykos. Got jumped. Supplies lost."[break][break]

He cuts communication without waiting for a reply.

It's chilling, how easily Rocket will sacrifice their Pokémon as meat shields. Chilling, but expected. Orion feels little guilt over it; he's seen the ferocity of Rocket's Pokémon, had to stand by as many were deemed unable to be rehabilated.[break][break]

Euthanized.[break][break]

He doesn't have long to dwell on it regardless, for the Rocket slams into him and brings them both to the ground.[break][break]

In blood and muck, they grapple for each other's throats. Even as a strong hand threatens to crush his windpipe, Orion's metal hand seeks the same. There is no hope of his grip going slack, of muscle spasms.[break][break]

A human throat was nothing beneath the unrelenting pressure of titanium.[break][break]

Until the PERISH SONG reaches its peak, and the Rotom within the arm faints.[break][break]

Orion has become reliant on the dexterity provided by the ghost. Without it, his grip does indeed go slack, and fingers struggle with nerve endings and commands from a frazzled mind.[break][break]

His good hand rips a pin from titanium, his Absol MEGA EVOLVING and DETECTING the incoming attacks in time to leap clear.[break][break]

Gasping, choking on thin breaths, Orion takes advantage of any brief respite offered by his near-victory to roll away from his attacker, staggering back to his feet. The supplies are on the ground, closer to the Rocket than to him.[break][break]

Decidueye shines her SPOTLIGHT on the Absol, hoping to keep the Pokémon's attention away from her trainer.

Unfortunately for Orion, he's not a trained fighter. He's angry and scrappy and has basic knowledge of how to deal with when a call goes bad. This is not that.[break][break]

He expects the punch to stun the man, and he doesn't expect him to hit back.[break][break]

There's a wet crunch as his nose breaks, hot blood dripping from his chin. He can taste it in his mouth as he gasps, staggering back, his Rotom DISCHARGING a burst of electricity to force the Rocket back.[break][break]

But while he's no trained fighter, Orion is resilient. Spitting out his own blood, he rips two more pokeballs free of his belt to even the odds. His poor Chandelure hadn't stood a chance against the sudden deluge.[break][break]

His Absol immediately lunges for the man, a SUPER LUCKY NIGHT SLASH looking to draw blood. Decidueye is more calculated, firing a SPIRIT SHACKLE into the shadows from whence the water had come.

Unfortunately, the PERISH SONG proves a brutal solution to the ranger's empowered metal arm. As the HAZE neutralizes its earlier NASTY PLOT, the haunting song puts a timer on the battle.[break][break]

Fuck.[break][break]

Perseus was his powerhouse, and Orion couldn't afford to lose him when up against the Ultra Beast laden Wilds. So, scowling, he reluctantly switches out the chimera after it takes the brunt of the DISCHARGE.[break][break]
