Orion was a wild card. Over-aggressive. Though he was an Elite Ranger again after Razz Kingsman had graciously restored his rank, he still couldn't be trusted in a fight against Rocket. He was too volatile.[break][break]

So, naturally, he's stuck on delivery duty.[break][break]

Fine. Whatever. He's not mad about it, or anything.[break][break]

It's late in the day, and what had once been runs back and forth to deliver SCATTERBANGS and POISON BARBS had turned into a desperate ferrying of medical supplies to the wounded. He was told to help with extractions where he could.[break][break]

This felt more rewarding, at least.[break][break]

In the chaos of battle, his orders don't always come from the same person, so he doesn't think much of a voice he doesn't recognize. There are dozens of Rangers in Slateport alone that he hasn't met. It's also not weird that they're not at the meeting spot right away... but where Orion is unaware of another presence, his Silvally growls low in its throat.[break][break]

Dark energy coalesces around his arm as the Rotom within charges a NASTY PLOT, and Orion calls out, "Show yourself."

Surprisingly enough, it's not Razz Kingsman that draws the ire of the one-armed ranger, but Rowan Wrynn.[break][break]

"Yeah, you'd know all about Rocket's plans, wouldn't you?"[break][break]

It's snippy and scathing and perhaps unintentionally uncomfortable to Caleb Harcourt if he was present in the room. Amidst all the other gathered Rangers, Orion hadn't stopped to look for familiar faces yet.[break][break]

Rowan had only gained his attention by speaking up, but now Orion glowers at him in full, metal arm crossed over that of flesh.[break][break]

Caleb had been out of Rocket for years by the time he'd revealed his truth. This asshole had been with them recently. He should be in prison, not playing nice with the Rangers.

Or if they did, he wasn't sure that they should. How many times had he found himself in Tam's office for the wrong reasons?[break][break]

He's not sure Razz Kingsman should trust him, either, and shock is too light a descriptor for what he feels when Razz expresses that he does. What had Orion ever done to earn the trust of the now-Head Ranger?[break][break]

"Your people skills?" He's so surprised that he laughs again, though this time it rings more genuine. "I don't think you're the problem."[break][break]

It was no secret that Orion sucked at social interaction, not even to Orion himself.[break][break]

"Well, uh. Shit. I guess I can... try it out."[break][break]

He rubs the back of his neck with his good hand, feeling suddenly self conscious. He'd been ready to storm out a minute ago for all the wrong reasons.

The loneliness aches in his chest, flickers briefly in his expression as pain before he shutters it. They'd been nothing official, but he felt the other man's absence as a void in his chest. Feelings were too much in their infancy to be called love, but he'd held an affection for Tam that made his departure sting.[break][break]

He couldn't exactly tell Razz any of that.[break][break]

He's so caught up in his emotions that he almost misses what Razz says next, blinks and allows a brief silence to stretch between them as he belatedly processes.[break][break]

Eventually, he just asks, "Why?"[break][break]

He was certain Razz loathed him. He wouldn't be the first.

He doubles back now to the question he'd been posed before: why did he want to transfer out of Slateport?[break][break]

"I don't want to lose my job again." That much was true, said with great discomfort. "I don't know if I'll be a good fit for Slateport. Going forward."[break][break]

While not strictly untrue, this was not the whole truth. It wasn't Slateport that was the problem: it was Razz himself.

As a ghost-type expert, he says with confidence, "Litwick can't do that."[break][break]

His starter Pokémon had been a Litwick.[break][break]

Was it simply a lucky guess on the Head Ranger's part, or was something else going on here? He squints suspiciously, trying to think up a lie that Razz can't verify by simply looking at his file. He's been a Ranger for so long, that feels impossible.[break][break]

He fidgets in evident discomfort.[break][break]

"They didn't cut my arm off, really." A pause. "They forced my Pokémon to do their dirty work."[break][break]

That much was true, but, "It was Altair that did it."[break][break]

That was a lie.[break][break]

He doesn't answer the question about the transfer yet.

Razz seriously had the gall to ask him if he'd ever worked for Team Rocket? The guy they'd captured and tortured and fucking mutilated?[break][break]

Altair lightly grazes his teeth against Orion's hand, both as a warning to rein in his escalating emotions and as a reminder that there were rules to this questioning. He presses his lips thin, sighs.[break][break]

"Right. Ask me again."[break][break]

"Have you ever willingly worked with Team Rocket?"[break][break]

"No."[break][break]

"Have you ever been a willing member for Team Rocket?"[break][break]

"No."[break][break]

"Have you ever taken a bribe to look away from a crime?"[break][break]

This one is a little less obvious of an answer, but still gets a firm response of, "No."

I can put in a request for transfer as soon as this bullshit is over. It's the only thing that stops him from snapping. He'd been miserable when the Rangers had fired him. He didn't want to go through all of that again.[break][break]

It's clear from Orion's expression that he doesn't believe the apology, but the Ranger bites his tongue against retort. That was the sort of behaviour that had gotten him fired from Fortree.[break][break]

Which, of course, this jackass was quick to bring up.[break][break]

His nostrils flare with a sharp intake of breath, the Absol seated next to him grumbling softly as if to admonish his trainer for letting his emotions get the better of him. Orion ignores him.

Sensitive psychic-types such as Salem would doubtless feel the anger and anxiety pouring off Orion in waves as he steps inside the office that had once belonged to Tam. The Absol who pads faithfully at his side can feel it, too, pressing his weight against the Ranger's calf in a futile attempt to soothe him.[break][break]

Razz knows full well that Orion doesn't like him.[break][break]

And now, this guy was supposed to be his boss? Was supposed to somehow replace Tam, who'd taken a chance on him when no one else would fucking bother? Yeah, right.[break][break]

Though he does his best to moderate his expression, the hints of a scowl seep through as he sits down.[break][break]

His eyes narrow when Caleb mentions smuggling, betraying exactly what he thinks of that. It didn't sound as if Caleb had been sucked in at all. It sounds as if he'd willingly involved himself in illegal activities in a region full of criminals.

But, as he'd promised to hear Caleb out, he purses his lips and doesn't interrupt.

Coward, Caleb labels himself, and Orion huffs in evident agreement. His gaze is not kind.

Though he can feel the regret exuded by the man across the table, he cannot bring himself to feel sympathy.

"Everyone has their excuses." His metal fingers curl into a fist. "You know who did this to me? Chu-e Choi. You probably knew him." He spits the words. Choi had been a Beast in Kanto. "Fed me some sob story about being abused as a kid, as if that made it okay to fucking torture me. I didn't do shit to him."

He slams his fist down on the table, making their drinks jump. Several patrons look over at their table, but for once Orion seems oblivious to social scrutiny. Anger blazes in his emerald eyes.

Valiant though LANCE VOLLANS's attempts were at bolstering his confidence, Orion remains stiff and uncomfortable.[break][break]

"Never liked being a Councilman."[break][break]

Once he might've hesitated to disparage his time working with the government but all of that had changed when Rocket had captured him. Both the things he'd learned from Chu-e Choi and the lack of rescue left him bitter and jaded.[break][break]

Caleb Harcourt's arrival might've helped soothe him if not for his friend getting distracted by a pretty girl. Typical.[break][break]

His mood only sours further when Razz Kingsman steps up.[break][break]

Head Ranger?[break][break]

He'd never seen eye to eye with the younger Ranger; had in fact squabbled with him on multiple occasions. Now Razz was going to be his boss? It had been bad enough that the Elite Ranger had outranked him ever since his own status had been stripped.[break][break]

He'd been in talks with Tam about getting it restored after Littleroot, but now Tam was gone.[break][break]

His stomach sinks further when Razz mentions Slateport.[break][break]

Common sense urges him to leave it alone, but Orion has never been good at moderating his emotions.[break][break]

"Yeah, I have a concern." Sharper than he intends. "Don't you work for Silph? Isn't that a conflict of interest?"
