His eyes narrow at LANCE VOLLANS's comment, wondering if it's some sort of dig. Not wanting to get into a fight, however, he says only, "No. I don't think I'd be the right one for the job."[break][break]

He was bristly and anti-social, definitely not the right kind of person to lead. He'd learned that as a Councilman, much as he'd tried to make it work.[break][break]

"Orion," he adds, for Lance had already provided his surname. "Slateport. Oldale's been pretty rough with the Icelands, huh?" He offers a sympathetic grimace. "I was in Littleroot when all of that went down."[break][break]

He manages an awkward nod toward saskia volosenkova and annalise henderson.

Orion wasn't a captain. His captain had vacated the position. Great. Orion didn't consider himself anyone important, but he was a Ranger. The Rangers were all he had left.[break][break]

He arrives with pizza from the favoured location of the Slateport Rangers, TELEPORTING to the location after receiving the order so that the food remains hot. He recalls his Alakazam after arrival, but his Absol remains faithfully at his side.[break][break]

After setting down the pizza boxes, his gaze catches on Nikolaj Volosenkov. Not wanting to be too awkward, he chokes out a quick, "Hey."

That doesn't stop him from groaning in embarrassment and burying his head in his hands both flesh and metal when the game reminds him, in no uncertain terms, that he was trying to virtually fuck his virtual boss.[break][break]

"Fuckin' kill me."[break][break]

Shame almost makes him backtrack, but the allure (kill him) of a custom-tailored route keeps him on this cursed path. There was no way in hell Tam was ever allowed to know about this. Nor anyone else at Slateport HQ. He'd never live it down.[break][break]

This was wildly uncomfortable.[break][break]

Dating games make him uncomfortable. It always feels strangely desperate to seek the attention he craves from other sources. Call it his anxiety, call it pride, call it whatever you like, but Orion doesn't play dating games.[break][break]

The Slateport Rangers, though, they talk. And through the grapevine, he's heard that RVL has a Tam Fawley route.[break][break]

It feels wrong even booting up the game, but call him curious...[break][break]

Wait a minute. Had there been a Team Rocket option? He's incensed for a moment at the gall, ready to chew Tam out before he remembers his ~~friend~~ ~~crush~~ Captain likely had 0 hand in making this.[break][break]

He's about to hit RANGER when the final option catches his eye.[break][break]

Well-adjusted to the use of PHANTOM FORCE for travel, Orion releases the Drifblim's appendage and finds his footing amidst the forest of bamboo that jacob kim's Pokémon has brought them to. He is calm, if sour of expression, until the young Ranger's remark draws his attention.[break][break]

Oh no.[break][break]

"That's not soil, idiot, that things about to fucking launch!"[break][break]

Celesteela, he knew, possessed thrusters like a jet engine and the capacity to take off in a similar fashion. Jake was about to get the ride of a lifetime, whether he wanted it or not.[break][break]

"There's room for all of us." But he's not the Captain here, so he looks to Tam Fawley for guidance. "If we don't want to have to run this thing down after."[break][break]

He recalls his Silvally, just in case.

Caleb's smile makes Orion's stomach twist. He doesn't have many friends. He takes to treasuring those few that manage to slip past his defenses enough to get more than a few words out of him in a non-professional setting. It makes betrayal sting all the more.

Fight or flight suggests he exit the situation with haste, or perhaps deck the man across from him. Orion does neither of those things.

"Haven't tried it," he says, clipped, of the Winter's Kiss.

The Petal Dance sits on the table in front of him, still untouched.

Orion merely shakes his head at Tam Fawley; there's no time to get into it, now. This much is proven when the simple act of clearing some bamboo puts them all in mortal danger. That would have been bad enough, but-[break][break]

"KARTANA! RUN!"[break][break]

-apparently bad enough wasn't good enough for Hoenn.[break][break]

"Hate it here," he growls under his breath, turning hard on his heel to dash back toward the others. As jacob kim's Drifblim lifts them skyward, Orion shouts to his Silvally, "PERCY! DEFENSE!"[break][break]

The callout is unnecessary. At the sight of Kartana, the Beast Killer snarls deep in its throat. AERIAL ACE ensures its ability to land a hit against their agile foe, buying time for the rangers to gain some distance.[break][break]

To john nelson, he says a little curtly, "Name's Orion."[break][break]

Sure, the Pokémon wouldn't know that, and John's descriptor made the most sense in the heat of battle, but Orion's still self conscious about his metal limb. He doesn't want that to become a thing.

john nelson manages to dodge Orion's infamous ire by virtue of Tam Fawley and jacob kim sharing its burden. Though close with the Captain (far closer than some might even realise), it doesn't save Tam from a withering look when he declares the baby Celesteela as cute.[break][break]

You're impossible, the look suggests, though he won't go as far as to disrespect the Captain on a mission.[break][break]

He also thinks terrorists are attractive, Orion reminds himself. Arceus. What did that suggest about him? Thank goodness there wasn't time to worry about that, with the bamboo forest looming ahead.[break][break]

"Altair." The Absol at his side perks up. "Clear a path."[break][break]

The Disaster Pokemon levels his horn toward the thick bamboo stalks. It glows with bright psychic energy before the white-furred Pokemon lunges with a powerful NIGHT SLASH that cleaves through the forest of bamboo with a satisfying clatter of stalks.[break][break]

Unfortunately, disturbing the bamboo also disturbs what hides within.[break][break]

"WATCH OUT!"[break][break]

The biggest Ariados Orion has ever seen spins its STICKY WEB, clearly with the intent to ensnare the explorers. The Decidueye who'd been circling diligently overhead flares bright with her ILLUMINA STATE as her SPOTLIGHT redirects the arachnid's attention elsewhere.

Orion almost decides not to go.[break][break]

He'd stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Caleb Harcourt in the heat of the moment, a bond reforged in the heart of battle. Now that they were away from danger, his feelings have tangled into a complex mess of uncertainty.[break][break]

Caleb had been Rocket, but Caleb had also been his friend. He had probably killed people, tortured people, but he'd saved lives in Littleroot. Befriending a man like Sharpe — no, Harcourt, he reminds himself — went against everything he stood for.[break][break]

He'd struggled with his sense of identity ever since he'd gotten the text that morning.[break][break]

In the end, he shows up late.[break][break]

He's probably already gone, Orion tells himself as he pushes open the door, uncertain of whether he'd feel better or worse if that turned out to be true. Happy couples drink Winter's Kiss, talking and laughing together, but Orion's expression is flat and unreadable as he scans the tables for a face he's sure he won't see.[break][break]

"Caleb." It's gruff, tinged with surprise. When Orion sits down, setting an unopened Petal Dance on the table, he folds his arms against his chest for some feeling of security. His Absol settles next to him, red eyes fixed calmly on Caleb.[break][break]

He doesn't know what to say.

[attr="class","main"]Tam may not put any thought into the grip on Orion's arm, but Orion certainly does. He's hyper-aware of the contact between them, heart jumping up into his throat for reasons other than the low grumbling sound that can be heard somewhere outside.[break][break]

Though Tam Fawley lets go as quick as he'd grabbed him, it does stall Orion's thought process as well as his movement toward the back door.[break][break]

Tam brushes past him, saying something about wild Pokémon.[break][break]

"I'm coming, too." Because he's worried about what might be out there, what danger Tam might be in if he goes alone. But the justification he gives is, "It's on my property, I wanna make sure it doesn't break shit."[break][break]

It turns out to be a fucking bear. A really big bear. An Ursaluna turns away from the window it had been bumping up against, growling at the sight of two potential threats.

She's smart to knee him in the gut. The blow knocks the air from his lungs and he doubles over with a grunt, shoulders tense with anger. If she hadn't disarmed him in such a way, she might've found a metal hand around her throat. Lack of self-defense is entirely dependent on his delayed reaction time, wheezing as he sucks in air and curls his fingers to fists.[break][break]

She winds her hand in his shirt and he snarls wordlessly, reaching up to knock her away with his titanium arm.[break][break]

"Get — fuckin hands off me."[break][break]

Tam Fawley is the only reason the situation doesn't escalate further; Orion, though furious at the assault, casts his Captain a sharp look before lowering the hand that had primed to hit back.[break][break]

He breathes out through his nose, then offers the Captain a curt nod.[break][break]

"I'll buy you a fuckin' pizza if you care that much," he snaps at Hailee. "The fuck'd you attack me for?"

Orion's not good at socializing. The Slateport Rangers are the closest things to a friend group he's ever had, yet he still feels immense discomfort when they're all gathered in one place. Especially when it's for a gift exchange. He doesn't hate giving gifts, nor receiving them, but he does experience a spike in anxiety at the thought that he might come across aloof or ungrateful, or that the gift he'd chosen for his recipient isn't something they'd like.

It's made worse by the fact that he'd been matched with Hailee Jacobs. She'd organized the whole thing; had she done this on purpose? Did she want to make him look bad because of something he'd done? It's a downright silly assumption, yet the back of his neck prickles with it.

Eventually, the inevitable can be postponed no longer.

"Hey, uh, Hailee."
[break][break]

He clears his throat, more out of discomfort than to get her attention since he'd already approached her.

"I wasn't entirely sure what you liked but, um, I've noticed you have a lot of floral Pokemon." Lilligant, Cottonee, Florges... Orion may not talk much, but he does pay attention to the Pokemon partners of his fellow Rangers. It's one of the few ways he tries to understand them. Hailee liked cute things. "This seemed like it'd be right up your alley."

He hands her a love ball which, if opened, would be revealed to contain a COMFEY.
