In the grand tradition of workplace activities that everyone ends up obligated to participate in due to peer pressure, the Slateport Rangers had organised their own holiday gift exchange. It had not been Tam’s idea, for the record.

Two weeks ago, when everyone had written their names in neat little pieces of paper and then drawn someone else’s, the captain had been convinced that this is a work obligation, and that misconception had not been cleared even now that he walks into the break room with a plainly wrapped present and pizza for everyone.

Now, the breakroom of the Slateport Ranger headquarters generally isn’t particularly impressive. It’s spacious, as far as breakrooms go. There’s a large table, a couch, appliances, even regularly-stocked vending machines… and these days, as if for the sake of giving it a sprinkle of “holiday spirit” there’s also a small artificial tree sitting in a corner – topped with a golden Jirachi ornament and everything. Garlands adorn the windows with a perfect view of the empty training grounds, and the doorframe where everyone had marked their heights (the newest 4’11” written by Genevieve Cromwell finally having dethroned the fake 5’2” he had given Orion Lykos as the shortest in the squad) is now topped by a mistletoe that someone had likely put there as a prank. There’s even fruitcake on the table, although for some reason it remains untouched…

”Okay, so… Who starts?” Tam asks after putting the boxes down by the fruitcake, because while it’s his duty and obligation to take the lead when work is concerned, he had not been the one to plan this. For now, the recipient of his gift remains secret.

In fact, this is his first Secret Santa, or whatever it is that Hailee Jacobs had called it.

Talia did not know Caleb Harcourt so well, save for the few outings they had done together as Rangers. One thing, however, she had noticed about him.

The love he had for his Lapras, Lyra, who shared the very same name as her Dragonair. The very same name of a harp-shaped constellation.

An idea struck Talia at this revelation, and she'd spent many days perfecting baking black velvet nebula cookies -- each complete with a frosting-rendered constellation, as a finishing touch.

At the bottom of the gift, as well, he'd find a compass -- one with the likeness of a Lapras etched into its back. That, unlike the desserts, had cost a relatively decent amount. The pawn shop owner had been willing to take some of Talia's old performer clothes to lower the cost, and that had felt worthwhile.

"I hope you don't mind that getting something homemade," she said upon handing him the pretty pastel bag of desserts. "There's something at the bottom of the bag, too, though!"

Glancing up, she belatedly noticed he was lingering under mistletoe. On purpose? Maybe. Caleb could be that way.

Oblivious to this side of him, Talia simply laughed, and said, "And I guess you can have this, too." A chaste peck on the cheek answered the holiday tradition, innocently given.

Marshall had only been a Ranger for a couple of months, but he already felt strong bonds of friendship with many of his colleagues. One person he hadn't spent a lot of time with, however, was Calliope Marks. So when he had drawn her name for the Secret Santa party, he found himself stumped over what to give her.[break][break]

Thankfully, a little snooping around proved fruitful. After a trip to one of the winter markets that had popped up throughout the region, Marshall found a small gift box of Kantonese sweets.[break][break]

"Hey!" he said to Calliope, smiling widely. He offered the wrap box for her to take. "It's not much, but I hope you like it!"

Kieran was a little nervous, which was a bit unusual for him. He took gift-giving very seriously and the last thing he ever wished to do was to disappoint, or even worse, insult someone with his choice of gift. This time, honestly, he wasn't that worried because he thought he had a pretty good gift for Genevieve Cromwell . The Florges reminded him of a bouquet of flowers, it was pretty like Genny. Maybe the sentiment was dumb but hopefully she didn't find insult in it.

"Hey Genny!" He beamed at her, "Ho ho ho, I'm your secret Santa. So, I got you a little something." Awkwardly, he fished around his backpack for the pokeball. His serperior, Siv, looked up at him with a touch of exasperation because he really should have been prepared for this. Aha! He pulled the pokeball free before releasing the Florges.

"I hope you like it, it's pretty so it reminded me of you." While it saddened him to part with the fairy pokemon, he didn't see himself utilizing it. Thus, it probably was better off with someone that could appreciate it.

Throughout his time as Slateport’s Ranger Captain, Tam has come to know most of the squad rather well, and so, even though he still thinks of this “Secret Santa” activity as no more than a work obligation, he finds that there’s something kind of nice about seeing everyone exchanging presents they chose specifically for one person or another.

Tam himself sucks at picking presents for people, it’s part of why he’s not particularly big on Christmas, but even he had put care into choosing one for the person whose name he had happened to draw.

And, who would that be?

”Kieran.”

There is no ceremony to it. No grand gesture. No ‘I hope you like it!’. There’s simply the captain offering the present he had brought with him to Kieran Roth, as if there is no need for explanations. Because, well… there isn’t, of course. Yet, Tam does decide to make one small addition:

”You’ve done well during your time with us. I know tasks can get tough sometimes, rest is important… and enjoy your holidays.”

That’s that.

Beneath all that apathy and aloofness, there is perhaps one awkward man who is actually really damn proud of his rangers.

When holding it, Kieran would perhaps find the present to be surprisingly light, and the reason why would be obvious when looking at its content: a lightweight yet warm sleeping bag, perfect for all those ranger missions that require them to spend nights out in the great outdoors. It’s shaped like a cute Psyduck. Why? Well, honestly, Kieran kind of reminds him of one.

Its always weird coming to the Slateport Ranger's office as it feels so much more livelier than what he is used to. It gave more of the vibes the old Sootopolis Captain used to give to the island's base, rather than the new office where the only living inhabitant was Rosé and an empty floor. As it was much simpler for the other to just visit other departments for his social needs rather than decorate what little was there. Though as usual Rosé was part of the reason he even came, claiming that they needed to keep on good terms with at least the Slateport Rangers as they all worked from the same city. [break][break]

The older man even gave Razz a loud red and green striped sweater to wear, one of the ugliest things he's seen but he claimed that was the point when it came to parties like this. The front of it was even made out of a reflective material that people could see themselves out of if they got close. [break][break]

For now he just watches the other try and give their gifts, but unlike the others Razz had put his gift under the decorated tree in the office as he thought thats what you were suppose to do. "I thought the point of this was that your 'santa' was meant to be secret?" he questions to Tam Fawley as it was clear the young man didn't understand. The gift next to the tree was large as inside it was camping gear for one Marshall Slade as he heard the other likes camping, and with his Silph money along with AQUA activities, price was no big deal for him as the bad was big enough to fit a tent and some extras.

The level of excitement Genevieve had to receive a gift could be infectious, as Kieran Roth reveals himself as the secret Santa, and the squeal that comes from Genny can only be likened to that of a schoolgirl waking up on Christmas morning to see Santa. "EEEEEEEEE!" And the noise can only befit that.

When the Florges releases, Genevieve's mouth opens wide, as she begins to hop up and down. "LOOK AT THEM!" She latches onto the Florges, giving it a hug. "It's like a sweet scent! Thank you, Kieran!" Darn! Now she wish she gave Noah a Pokemon as a gift. This was amazing!

There's a certain level of insanity to Genevieve Cromwell. With this secret santa, she has every bit the chance to show what she's made of. Littleroot Town was pretty big. It was a massive event, and Genevieve wasn't able to assist. But what she can do, is debatably better. Everyone in her team that went to Littleroot was likely exhausted, and needed a vacation, and Genny would help in the best way.

See. Genevieve is a workaholic when working, and she has given Noah Camus something he probably wanted(?) slash needed; a vacation.

"Nooooooah!" She waves, not holding a gift per se, but with a bit grin on her face, she holds out an envelope with a keycard in it. "I'm your Secret Santa! So I took the liberty to ask for your next three days and work three doubles in a row to give you a little vacay after Littleroot!" She showcases her toothy grin, turning on her heel to pull out her phone, and hold it out, filled with pictures of what the keycard leads to.

"But that wasn't enough. So I got to thinking! It's a bit too cold to go to the beach this time of year, so I brought the beach to you!" Her phone has images of a small room with a hammock, likened to a hotel room. On the hammock, a couple of pillows, blankets, and to the side, a heater.

"I rented a small room downtown for a day tomorrow starting in the morning, and you can invite Hailee Jacobs on a day together! I bought a small hammock and had a friend help me set it up for you both to relax, so that way you both can take a day off together! I even bought a white noise machine in there to simulate the waves of the beach! It comes with a lovely heater that I tested out, and even put some food in it so you don't have to leave if you don't want to for the whole day!" She was prepared to even order a food delivery if either of them wanted it that day.

She doesn't have a lot of Pokemon. She hardly can think of giving someone away, and she hardly has much of a penny to her name. But giving him a vacation as a Secret Santa? She hoped she wasn't imposing! Three days wasn't a lot, but one day to just relax and decompress? Let alone when someone was doing his shifts for him? She just hoped it was compensation enough!

"Oh! One more thing! The pay for those three shifts SHOULD be in there too! So think of it like Paid Time Off from a friend!"

Orion's not good at socializing. The Slateport Rangers are the closest things to a friend group he's ever had, yet he still feels immense discomfort when they're all gathered in one place. Especially when it's for a gift exchange. He doesn't hate giving gifts, nor receiving them, but he does experience a spike in anxiety at the thought that he might come across aloof or ungrateful, or that the gift he'd chosen for his recipient isn't something they'd like.

It's made worse by the fact that he'd been matched with Hailee Jacobs. She'd organized the whole thing; had she done this on purpose? Did she want to make him look bad because of something he'd done? It's a downright silly assumption, yet the back of his neck prickles with it.

Eventually, the inevitable can be postponed no longer.

"Hey, uh, Hailee."

He clears his throat, more out of discomfort than to get her attention since he'd already approached her.

"I wasn't entirely sure what you liked but, um, I've noticed you have a lot of floral Pokemon." Lilligant, Cottonee, Florges... Orion may not talk much, but he does pay attention to the Pokemon partners of his fellow Rangers. It's one of the few ways he tries to understand them. Hailee liked cute things. "This seemed like it'd be right up your alley."

He hands her a love ball which, if opened, would be revealed to contain a COMFEY.

It was Christmas time so it was only expected that Hailee would have to organize a cute little Christmas get together with her second family here. It wouldn't be Christmas without gifts and people to celebrate, and Hailee wanted to celebrate each and every single one of her Slateport Ranger family. [break][break]

While Hailee's own family, aside from her sister, were estranged, these people that she saw almost everyday quickly became her family. It was strange, it was sort of like they came out of nowhere. Before she knew it she was surrounded by people and even quicker than that she found herself enjoying their quirks and company more than anything. [break][break]

These were people she wanted to protect. When the end of the world was on the horizon, even though she was riddled with anxiety and fear, she only hoped that her actions could contribute to a chain reaction that would keep her loved ones safe. These people. Luckily they were here to see another day, and after a near brush with death, it seemed only right to take a breather and relax, they deserved it. [break][break]

Hailee was beaming from ear to ear as she watched the gift exchanges from afar. She not only had her own secret Santa but she also went out of her way to get everyone in the office gifts this year. It wasn't much but it was a small token to show her appreciation for all of them. When Genevieve Cromwell mention to Noah that she'd gotten him a little getaway trip for Christmas Hailee was floored. That was so thoughtful, she hadn't even anticipated something like this before. She mentioned that Noah take Hailee so they could enjoy some time alone and Hailee felt her cheeks flush.[break][break]

"Genny you're so sweet~" Hailee said with a touched smile. She certainly would love to get to spend some time with Noah, especially after everything that had gone down. They'd both been extremely busy after the events of Littleroot so they hadn't had a chance to really catch their breath just yet. [break][break]

"Hey, uh, Hailee." Orion spoke up and caught her attention. He seemed nervous and Hailee assumed it was due to the crowd. Then again, Orion had always been a little awkward, just like their team Captain, but that was part of his charm. Hailee flashed Orion a warm smile. "Hey there," Orion cleared his throat, it was clear he was working up the nerve to continue and Hailee didn't want to impede on his plans so she relaxed, reclining on the couch. [break][break]

"I wasn't entirely sure what you liked but, um, I've noticed you have a lot of floral Pokemon." Hailee's eyes widened. Well, that was certainly true. But she didn't expect him to take note of that. "This seemed like it'd be right up your alley." Orion handed her a love ball which she took gingerly. Sitting up straight she opened it and out popped a cute little Comfey.[break][break]

Hailee gasped as she looked up at him. "Oh!" she exclaimed as the Comfey happily floated around her. "It's so cute!!" Hailee squealed before jumping up to her feet and hugging Orion. "Thank you so much! I love it!" Hailee had a soft spot for cute Pokémon so Orion's instincts were correct, this was certainly up her alley. "I'll take good care of it, I promise!" Hailee gave him one last squeeze before releasing him. [break][break]

Since Hailee was up she figured it was time she get started. "Alright, things are looking pretty good so I guess it's my turn." She said with a confident smirk before turning and grabbing a box wrapped in shining blue paper and adorned with a pink bow. "Razz, This is for you. Merry Christmas and I hope you like it!" she exclaimed setting the box in his lap. [break][break]

Once he opened the box he would find a pokeball and a custom Hailee-fied ticket inside. Upon opening the pokeball he would be greeted with a Tentacruel with a bow stuck to it's head courtesy of Hailee of course. Meanwhile the ticket was for a movie-day extravaganza planned by Hailee. She'd set up and transform a space into the perfect movie watching experience upon redemption and Razz would get to enjoy quality films of his choice as well as snacks and beverages. [break][break]

"Ah but I'm not done yet. Under the tree is a present from me to everyone." Hailee beamed. "I hope you all enjoy them. It's just a small way for me to thank you all for being there for me and having my back." Hailee's cheeks grew flushed once more as she found herself a little embarrassed. She reached under the tree once more for a gift and sat it in Tam Fawley's lap. "So feel free to look for your presents," Hailee said with a nod.[break][break]

Tam's present contained a custom coffee mug that said World's #1 Dad on it as well as a vintage pipe since Tam smokes all the time. Meanwhile the rest of the team had personalized gifts and tickets of their own that they could redeem from Hailee for something special. It'd taken her a while to think of something that each person would like so she hoped that they all enjoyed it.
