If she hadn’t learned to push aside the darker thoughts that came with her ‘circumstances’, she would’ve been consumed by them months into her journey. Perhaps, then, it isn’t much of a surprise that her smile doesn’t waver, as long as she isn’t made to bring up specifics. “Well, you know what they say. When life gives you venom, you make venomade!”

Instead, the woman’s explanation gave her food for thought. Who would be ‘illegal’, and crazy enough to try a gym challenge anyway? “Guess I never considered that any bad guys would be that bold…” Then again, it wasn’t unheard of for criminals to travel to new regions, trying to start a new life, to say nothing of characters the League suspected. “This Mister Silph must be something, to make his gym into, like, border patrol. …And you too, of course! Since I guess he wouldn’t even see the bad guys if you stopped them.”

Her finger landed on a challenge before she’d finished reading the sheet properly. “Ice! That one. Wait a second.” She squinted, leaning in a little closer. “It’s against ice types?” It was the most surprise she’d shown since walking in, but even that wouldn’t last. “Alright, I can work with that! All the better to show off our skills! I’m dedicating this future victory to the kind receptionist lady that didn’t kick me out for needing a hand. I hope that you get a chance to watch too!”

Trixie bounded into her trainer’s awaiting arms, always happy to get a hug from her trainer. For a few precious seconds, Annie forgot about the crowds. Her little puffball was more important, especially after a job well done. “You did great, Trix! I don’t know many Pokemon that can end a two-on-one so easily!” Both hands hoisted the Whimsicott into the air, and in the space between her arms, Annie saw them.

The crowds. The announcer. And a cloaked man that had to be the real star of the show, judging by his cloak. Nobody owned a white cloak for function. Hell, she couldn’t even afford one. Trixie adding to the audience’s cheers was an added sting to her pride. She knew her Whimsicott would cheer at anything if somebody else showed enthusiasm, but having at least one person in her corner would have been appreciated!

Still, she let her Pokemon go, knowing that she loved floating back to earth, and returned her to her ball as the man approached. Somehow, turning up to a gym battle shirtless felt like even more of a flaunt than a luxury wrap… But Annie couldn’t pretend that if the shoes were swapped, she would do her bit to keep the crowds happy. Until they remembered her name, she had to be her own hypeman. Business as usual, in other words.

‘Deep breath, Annie. You’ve got this.’

The cocky grin stayed on her face the whole time, but she was oddly silent, mostly lost in her own thoughts until the Pokemon came out. Still, anybody could see her eyes darting between Balder’s pair, and imagine her little hamster wheel figuring out a plan. For what it was worth, it only took her a few seconds to pull out a pair of Pokeballs, sending them spinning into the air. “It’s showtime, Blitz and Clamp! All of these people showed up to watch us kick some Bald Butt! We can’t disappoint.”

She was a simple girl, so it wasn’t hard for the audience to guess who was who out of a Scizor and Weavile. Both spared a second to look over their shoulders, nod at their trainer, and then at each other. Annie’s teams were often a cast of characters, but for the sake of a smooth battle, she’d chosen two beasts that thought – and fought – along the same lines.

“Keep sharp, boys! Clamp, Swords Dance, and Blitz, Hone those Claws!” Both Pokemon set to work preparing themselves for the battle ahead. Clamp’s rigid dance added a blue glow to his pincers, while Blitz’ claws shined in the light. “Do your worst,” she called to the man. “And we’ll do the same. Won’t learn anything otherwise, right?”

I've got no qualms with that idea! I'll ask if you could hold off for a week or two, while I desperately try to get my thread levels back to a reasonable number (plus, we might want to wait for the last mod post anyway), but I'm totally down for that thread. Eventually.

One lowered eyebrow said what she would not. Of course she knew that other people were after her crown… Their dream was shared by almost every budding trainer across the region, and probably a few outside it too. That wasn’t enough to wipe the smile off her face. “That’s good. More people trying for it just means I’ll be even greater when I outdo all of them. Then I’ll make myself the new standard to beat.” Good luck getting her to acknowledge the chance that she could fail, or that somebody else could earn the crown first.

“Hey, Neptune. Do you feel like you learned something from all that talk?” The Kingdra nodded, and therefore earned his freedom. “I guess that your guy knew what he was talking about, then!” She sounded rather impressed – a rare achievement from a girl that was mostly impressed by herself. “Kinda feels like we weren’t much help in the end, but as long as the little dragon-ettes are happy-“ And they were, as a cursory glance told her. “Then I’m happy! I’ll call it a job well done, thank your dragon for the hard work, and enjoy a nice paycheck!”

The good news brought out the sparkle in her eyes. “Really? Oh, thank geez! I don’t know what I would have told my guys if all that talk was for nothing!” Two palms planted onto the armrests propelled her onto her feet, backpack and all. There was a catch, of course, but a battle with strings attached was better than none at all. The vigour she carried as she walked in showed itself again as she approached the lady’s desk, setting herself to work filling in the form once she’d pulled her gloves off. “This is gonna be great! I’ll live with whatever options there are. A good trainer’s got to be adaptable and all, right?”

Thankfully, there was a lot that she could fill in. Contact details were left blank for obvious reasons, with the exception of an email address, but as the receptionist had already learned, she was more than happy to share details about herself.

“…Sorry if I seemed a bit grumpy for a bit there earlier. I’ve been camping outside the city, and I came in just to try this gym out. Imagine carrying all this around for the day just to hear that you’re being roadblocked by something you’ve already been stuck on for a while.” Her smile took a turn for the sheepish as she tried to make eye contact. “That’s not your fault, though. You just wanted to know.”

Silence hung in the air as she filled out the form as best she could. Honesty was the name of the game, unless the form asked about anything of a criminal nature. She’d already revealed enough uncomfortable truths about herself without discussing her desperate measures. “Why is ID so important here, anyway? The other gym I went to just made me sign a bunch of waivers, and then they were happy to drug me up.”

The boy’s bold claim did nothing to lessen her cocky grin. “You and everybody else will just have to get in line, pal. With fighters like Neptune-“ She paused to give her oversized seahorse a little squeeze. “We’re headed for the big time. And I’ll prove it by, you know, doing it!”

“Buuut-“ She paused, glancing at her partner Pokemon. “Maybe when I’ve got new combos I want to try out, I might have to hunt you down. Somehow. I’m not really down with the whole ‘contacting people’ thing yet.” Mostly because she didn’t have a computer, or a house to put the computer in. Or a phone, or money to buy the phone with. “Which is… probably something I should sort out before I start taking challenges, so scratch all of that. Just keep an eye for my face on the TV some time soon instead.” If only she could sell overconfidence.

“So, er… No offence, but do you know where your guy is in his speech? I don’t really speak Pokemon, and now that I think about it, I don’t know what he hasn’t covered that we should.”

The bomb exploded, but if Annie hadn’t known better she would have thought that the world did. Her eyes were already being assaulted by the sheer chaos around them, but the earthquake, the boom, the debris shattering and flying… It forced her to close her eyes, cover her ears with her one free arm and elbow.

One would think that they’d at least earned some rest, or even a moment of peace. By the time Buzz deposited her near the edge of the battlefield, she realised that the night just couldn’t be that easy. She’d barely allowed herself to take her eyes off the clown and its bomb, so the split-second she took to eye the Nihilego brought out a fresh wave of anxiety. So did the portal, threatening to bring more of its kind into their domain. She didn’t have a moment to breathe, but she took it anyway, forcing the fear and fret back down for another few seconds. She could panic when she was dead, but until then she had a job to do.

Somehow, Frankie knew how to battle the beasts better than she did, so she summoned it back onto the battlefield to aid. “We need to plug that hole- Hey, wait!” Too much chaos, too many commands, too many ultra-beasts. One of those factors, or perhaps all at once, made the Type: Null decide that it was done following orders. Even muffled by the helmet, the chimera’s roar could be heard by all close to it as it charged for the Nihilego in the market.

“Oh, shi- Buzz, cover Frankie with an Air Slash!” A little chirp from an oversized bug told it was happy to oblige, and then it disappeared from Annie’s side. Carrying her around hadn’t allowed him to show off his speed, but in that moment, six powerful wings enhanced by Speed Boost transformed him into a streak of green and red. He stopped at a distance from the tentacle beast, firing an Air Slash ahead of Frankie’s charge. If the beast attempted to grab his ally, it’d have to break through cutting winds first.

The threat of being grabbed meant nothing to the Beast Killer as it leapt into the fray. The Yanmega’s support went unacknowledged as it charged its attack. The man seemed surprised, and that was enough to draw a confused look out of her. “There was an option to just battle the gym leader, but that sounded too normal. So the alternative way-“ She checked off each of the steps with her fingers while her hips continued to sway with Rudi’s body. “She drugged me. Dumped me in the middle of a forest. Took most of my stuff, and told me to survive the night. I had three of my Pokeballs, the clothes on my back and… No, that was about it.”

Perhaps it wouldn’t be too surprising that Annie managed to sound pretty chipper about the experience. In her mind, the fact that she’d mostly known what she was getting into meant that it was still a step up over escaping Kanto. Even after that, for a girl that had gone years without a permanent home, another night in the wilds wasn’t much of a threat. “Oh! I had a flare in case I was about to die or something, but I never needed it.”

”…I guess none of that explains my arm.” Rudi nodded behind her, shortly before showing her moves to a Simipour swimming past. “Any good survival trainer knows that your first priority in the wilderness is finding shelter! So I went looking for that. Turns out a Pokemon had the same idea, and he wasn’t too friendly. Six-foot-tall green guy, with two scythes on the side of his head.” She held her hands up on either side of her face, roughly mimicking the shape of a Haxorus’ tusks.

“So I sent out Blitz to fight him, but halfway through the fight he just kinda decided he wanted to fight me instead… So he threw a rock at me, and I didn’t do the best job of dodging it. Still whooped his ass, though! And the gym leader paid for my trip to the hospital, so it all worked out eventually!”

By the time she finished her tale, both her and her Pokemon were treated to the sight of a Pokemon set free. Then captured. At least it seemed happy about it! “I figure after that I could even handle Snowbelle! …With some better clothes, at least.”

Annie only noticed the primate’s approach when he flung itself out of the trees by his tail, arcing into Lucha Libre fist-first. For once, the bird was the one sent tumbling onto his feet, but while he was annoyed by the blindside attack, his trainer merely raised an eyebrow. That was a fighter with Camp Annie potential, she thought… But she wouldn’t intervene until Libre had had some fun.

And so she watched and waited, letting the two fighting-types duke it out without any commands on her part. Not only was it a good way for her to observe the challenger’s style, fighting and balancing himself on any of his limbs as necessary, but it meant the Hawlucha got his workout for the day. With one quick “Pull back!”, Lucha Libre knew to withdraw, so Annie could throw a Pokeball in his place.
