The dragon talked. Boy, did he talk. Annie ‘Motor Mouth’ Mei had never seen a Pokemon talk for that long – mostly because she’d have walked off a few minutes in under normal circumstances.

“Hey,” she whispered, leaning her body towards Neptune. “Why don’t you talk like that? I’m gonna be expecting more inspiring speeches from you now that he’s set the bar.” She earned a headbutt for her words; a light jab in her side that earned more giggles that pained grunts. As ‘punishment’, the Kingdra spent five of those thirty minutes in a headlock, his trainer beaming the whole time.

“Huh? Me?” She directed her hushed voice to the other trainer, still asserting dominance over her Pokemon. For what it was worth, Neptune seemed very used to his predicament and fairly content with it. “Oh, right! Name’s Annie Mei. Current traveller and future champion of Hoenn, director of Camp Annie and up-and-coming trainer extraordinaire. My buddy here is King Neptune, the sniper of my water team.” The arm around his neck must have been more affectionate than restraining, since Neptune had no trouble giving Alec a nod of acknowledgement.

I’ve been meaning for Annie to get her revenge, but there are some slight issues. For one, I just submitted a thread yesterday where Annie semi-renounces her criminal ways, and I’m going to try to work with that moving forward because character development fuels me. Even without that, she stole out of necessity, not malice. A targeted attack would be a fair bit out of character for her :(

Buuut I’m not opposed to a Type Null thread. If he or his friends are paying attention in the raid (in between not-dying and all), Frankie's been out and on the offensive. Outside of the raid, she isn’t making much of an attempt to keep him secret, so he could just as easily catch the two out for a walk or training. Of course, he’ll still have to win her over after the ball situation, but there’s a good premise for a thread or two there!

It didn’t take long for somebody to answer the call. Whether it was out of a genuine desire to challenge or just to shut Libre up was anybody’s guess, but the end result was the same. The Machamp came charging out of the trees. A Low Kick attempted to punt the bird to kingdom come, but his small size allowed him to dive out of harm’s way. A Sky Drop took the Hawlucha into the air, firing himself back down with all the ferocity an overcompensating bird could muster, dealing a super-effective attack that knocked the other fighter off his feet.

The boy arrived in style, on the back of a blue behemoth. If he’d meant to leave a lasting impression on the young dragons, he’d accomplished as much. Annie, on the other hand, tried to look less than impressed… And so Alec quickly found himself on the wrong end of Annie’s stick.

“So you are late! I was about forty-percent sure of it! Make sure that you don’t do it again. That’ll be lesson number one, kiddos – be on time!” A Dratini a few feet in front of her tilted his head to one side. In fact, most of the Pokemon seemed to be lost on the concept of punctuality, and Annie noticed. That meant it was time for a change of subject! (And not introductions; as usual, she was too caught up in her own scheme to remember to share.)

“I’ve been teaching the little ones the basics of being a fierce dragon! The key to dragon-ing is self-confidence! You’ll have a hard time being intimidating or commanding if you can’t convince anybody that you believe in yourself!” Annie knew that better than most, considering that it was exactly what she was putting into practice.

“Take King Neptune over here.” The stick was directed at the Kingdra bouncing towards them. “Dark, brooding, and a little bit mysterious, but look into his eyes and tell me that you don’t see a predator in them!” Her dragon wasn’t doing much to appear menacing, but the natural slant of his eyes left him with a natural glare.

“And, er… This guy over here!” She pointed at the Salamence. “Alec will tell you all about his confidence!”

Finding the venue wouldn’t be hard. One only had to listen for the girl standing atop a roof, overcompensating for her height with sheer volume.

“Allll-right, cadets! The League’s hired me to whip you snappers into shape, and there’s no way in hell I’m going to let you leave as anything less than a job well done! So expect to leave today as a squad of bona fide dragons – not just by definition, but by heart.” She’d wanted a baton, but that would cost money she needed for food, so instead she passionately shook a very large stick at the junior dragons.

Said stick was directed at her companion for the day – a carefully-balanced Kingdra that dwarfed her. “This here’s my king of the sea, but he’s surfaced to show you lot how it’s done! Now we just need to wait for the other guy, who’s running late! …Or maybe I’m running early. It’s hard to tell without a watch.”

She quickly shook her head. “I need to be anywhere but Mauville right now. It’s just a good place to find mark-“ An abrupt pause, and a shift of her head away from him. Part of the trouble of not having many people to talk to was forgetting when to stop when somebody was around. He might have guessed that there was a method to her madness, and that it was how she’d kept out of trouble for so long, but bragging about it seemed… backhanded, after all they’d said.

Besides, she knew that he’d want him to do better.

“It… was a good place to do what I needed to do. Now, not so much.” Quick feet carry her over to Circe before they can dwell too much on that. “Wait, it’s that easy? Man, I gotta find me a teleporting Pokemon next! These trainers aren’t going to last much longer if I keep walking everywhere.”

The bad news is that Annie has more than her fair share of dragon-types, and a fair bit of experience in training them to go with it. The good news is that that means that experience can be passed on! If I remember right, there’s at least one mission that revolves around dragon training/taming, so they could be a good starting point for the two to show their stuff.

Lucha Libre was out, and he was raring for a fight. Every Pokemon in the area would know it, seeing as he was screaming as such to everybody in the area. Arms spread wide made him as big as possible, which was… Not very big, by any stretch of the imagination. He’d never let that stop him before, though. The important thing was that he felt like a giant.

Oh, yeah, and Annie was there too, barely holding back her laughter.

Something told Annie that she wouldn’t be getting any other emails to confuse his with, but she took the note from him anyway. Who knew when it could come in handy? The number was a little more appealing to her, seeing as she’d already had to call one person for help before, but the tale of Annie and Goliath could wait for another day. “Just know that I’m very persistent, so don’t make me have to check up on you.” Her tone told that she was only half-joking, and even then, mostly because he’d been nice to her.

“So, er… I hate to ask for anything else right now, but…” Two sweeping arms gestured to the floor, or rather, roof they were standing on. Of all the thief’s tricks she’d brought along, a flying Pokemon hadn’t been one of them. “If you could help me down… Somewhere those angry guys won’t find me, if that’s an option.”

“Good question! I don’t think it’s just an ice-type gym, but it had a whole list of challenges. I picked the ice one, obviously.” She may have missed the part where the gym-leader used ice-types, not the challenger. “There’s a bunch more gyms. Like, at least six. I’ve got the badge from Oldale Town. Broke my arm trying to get that one, but I think it’s healed up alright!” She stretched her right arm into the air to demonstrate. It was one of the many advantages of being a young trainer – she could bounce back from most anything, given enough time to rest.

“So while I was waiting on that getting fixed, I started training up my guys for more gyms. If I don’t break something else, then I’ll get enough badges to be halfway to being Hoenn’s champion.” She eagerly nodded, as if the only challenge that could stand in her way were more nights in the hospital. In her mind, that was probably the case.

Her eyes fell to the recently-filled Pokeball. “Kalos sounds like it has some really cool Pokemon! I’d love to go down and visit there some day.” Before she could think about holiday plans, she’d need to get steady income, but she chose to push those thoughts aside while the professor was around. Instead she leaned forward to watch his new friend earn a place in his team.

“This friendliness thing really works wonders. I’m glad you showed it to me! Everybody’s a little less tired at the end of the day, and even the guys I don’t catch end up being cool friends!” Case in point, the Ludicolo behind her waving to a Pelipper flying overhead. The big bird didn’t look too interested in dancing, but she bellowed a friendly call as she went on her way.

Today in ‘it sounded like a good idea in my head’, Annie summoned a Drampa to help corral a squad of his kind. Who knew how to calm the swarm down better than a fellow bully hunter? Unfortunately, Grampa’s experience meant that he knew exactly how hard it would be to stop them. He was sent out, took one look at the rampage, and-

Hid behind Annie. With a heavy sigh, she went for the tried and tested method of throwing a ball at a herd of angry Pokemon. It had worked so well with the Tyranitar, after all.

The good news for the Abomasnow was that Annie was absent, distracted by a loaf of day-old bread. The bad news was that she’d left her most trusted companion to watch over the plot in her stead. No, not the Exeggutor – she just thought she was the top dog. In reality, that title went to her first Pokemon, who knew all too well how hard food was to come by. Displaced or not, the wanderer couldn’t be allowed to harm their supplies. And so she was greeted with a Flamethrower – a one hit knock-out, thanks to the Abomasnow’s typing.

Some people fell over themselves apologising. Some suddenly saw her as a lost puppy that needed their guidance. One woman had saw it fit to hug her; another man walked away without a response. Compared to those, the woman steering clear of her little speech was a welcome change.

“Thanks. I appreciate it.” Annie forced on a faint smile, but even that barely lasted two seconds. She sought out a chair to rest on; in the absence of one, she’d settle herself on the floor. She stared at the floor while she waited, her brow furrowed as if it was to blame for her problems. Given a few minutes of peace, she’d bounce back to her regular self. She always did. She had to, if she was going to keep herself sane.
