Neither of the pair looked particularly impressed or convinced, but at least they’d gotten him to hold his tongue. The Zoroark drew his head back behind the mannequin, eyes fixed on the stranger the whole time. “There we go! Thank you. The constructive criticism is much appreciated! I’ve only got the money for one outfit, so I’ve gotta make sure that one ticks all the boxes.”

He asked for her parents; she raised an eyebrow. The word ‘Dead’ rested on her lips for a second, but she settled for “Don’t know and don’t care!” instead. “I’ve managed for this long without them around, so I’m not about to change that now. It’s just me. So definitely don’t call security about a lost child. It’ll just waste everybody’s time.” Her distaste for the guards was audible, which wasn’t too surprising if her current scheme was indicative of her usual day.

“Almost sixteen. I thought you were writing this down.” Her head tilted to one side as she wondered what the lady had been doing that whole time. What had all the questions been for?

Oh. Oh. The lady was set on making it one of those conversations. The kind where the other person couldn’t put the pieces together about a lone teenager with no papers, carrying everything to her name on her back. A reasonable person couldn’t fault the lady – young trainers weren’t all that uncommon, after all -, but so many rounds of the same talk and ensuing pity party had worn at her patience. Annie deflated, her eyes suddenly telling that she’d rather be somebody else. With all the enthusiasm of a minimum-wage employee, she began:

“I don’t know who my parents are. I was left at an orphanage. In Kanto. It’s ashes now, so there’s nothing to check there. I left when it burned down, because it was in the middle of the Rocket invasion. I’ve been living on the road since. I don’t have any ID because every piece of paperwork I had was in that building, and I haven’t had a fixed address to start making new ones. And, to be honest, even if I could, I’ve had other priorities, like finding a fixed address and making sure my Pokemon are taken care of, or previously, surviving the invasion.”

Blunt? Perhaps, but experience had taught Annie that hitting all the key points had saved her about three minutes of tiring back and forth.

The music had been playing on repeat in the studio for almost ten minutes, giving the Pokemon within ample time to stretch their legs and find their rhythm. The half-enthused director (who had mentioned several times that he hadn’t graduated to direct creatures that barely true art) clapped his hands, beckoning the beasts to hear his words. “One way or another, we’re going to make each of you shine before we wrap up! That is, if any of you want a future in this business! So before we get in front of the camera, I want one freestyle round! That’ll give me an idea of how to position you all,“ and who to hide out of frame. He set the song to play one last time and settled his gaze on each creature in turn.

Queenie didn’t need any help shining. At least, that was what Annie had told her. Then again, Annie said a lot of things, and wasn’t there to give the usual moral support. It was up to the Steenee to feed her own ego, and prove that she didn’t need any help doing so. With a quick curtsy, the living plant took two steps forward, placed her hands on her hips and twirled on the spot. Several times, in quick succession. Each spin released more and more of her Sweet Scent from the sepals atop her head. It would either invigorate or annoy her fellow dancers, but either way, it would likely get their attention – and that was all she really cared about.

The duel of legendaries and legends in the making was a sight too see; it was too bad that Annie wasn’t looking. She had bigger fish to fry, like the fact that half of the shoes she owned were melting before her eyes! A child's panicked yelps were added to cacophony as she kicked the whole thing off. As if the night wasn't bad enough, she was going to have to spend her food money on new trainers!
The night market sucked.

Gemini’s Psychic continued to help shift the bomb, though both it and its trainer couldn’t help but feel... insignificant. Compared to the absolute titan of a Pokemon that slammed the thing skyward, and the energy blasts of half a dozen Pokemon, were they even making a dent?

It didn’t matter, she reminded herself. If the dent pushed them to safety, she was happy to help.

At least the others had established that the bomb wasn’t exploding prematurely from their attacks. “Buzz, you can drop the rocks now. Frankie, think you can force it up with a Tri-Attack?” Neither of them needed to be told twice. Type: Null had quite a ways to go to hit the bomb, but it had already surprised her once that night.

“And Buzz, you u-“ The sound of something large and fierce approaching drew her attention. The girl turned to find waves of rock tearing out of the ground, and threatening to do the same to them. Annie recalled two-thirds of her team without so much as a farewell, opting instead to give the last one a command: “Buzzgetusouttaherenow!”

She’d tried her best to avoid flying on the bug, for reasons that became painfully clear to anybody sparing a glance. Nobody could deny the beast’s speed, but it was too slim to be ridden. As such, they had flown out of the attack’s path, but being held up only by a pair of thin legs was, perhaps unsurprisingly, not very comforting to her. Thankfully, the chaos would mask her prayers to whatever god was watching over her, as she asked it not to let the bug drop her.

TL;DR: Starmie continues using Psychic to lift the bomb. Type: Null attempts to fire a Tri-Attack to help it up. Both are recalled when Annie flies away from the Nihilego's attack on Yanmega.

Annie looked doubtful until the man explained himself. Apparently, he wasn’t just agreeing for the sake of making her feel better. They had different reasons (which was great; she didn’t know if her heart would take him being a serial killer or something), but a little common ground. It helped put her mind at ease.

“If I’m trying to call somebody, I track down a payphone, but if they’re trying to get to me…” She paused, drawing a finger to her lip. “Huh. Haven’t had that problem yet. Then again, I guess I wouldn’t know, since they couldn’t get in touch with me. Oh! I have an email. I think I had to make one to do a job. I can’t check it often, just when I’m near a library, and even then…” No home meant no address. No address meant no ID. No ID meant no library card. No library card meant sneaking on to a computer when a kid got distracted by flashing lights and abandoned the one they’d logged into.

“I can make it work. If I had to guess, it’s anniemei@pmail.com. And if not, you’ll know because it’ll bounce. I mean, who else is called Annie Mei around here?” Back in her usual spirits, the girl offered a relaxed shrug to him. She’d been through too many bad days to let a near-arrest keep her down for long. “I’ll stay close to a city, and check in every day until I see something from you. Sound good?”

The thought that she’d be denied her battle for the day barely crossed her mind, let alone her face. “So you’re saying there’s a chance. No problem. I’ve worked with better odds before.” She flashed the woman a thumbs-up, oblivious to how little she was helping the situation. At the mention of ID, the girl’s smile took a turn for the sheepish. She had her hiker’s backpack on, half her size and near-stuffed with her belongings… But a card wasn’t among its contents.

“Yeeeeeah, funny story. I kinda-sorta don’t have a trainer ID. Or… any ID, I guess. I’m not sure that I ever did. Sorry.” An apologetic smile until her eyes widened. “But I can keep answering questions! I’ve got a lot of answers, trust me! Or we can take a picture right now, if that’s what you need! It’ll have to be with your camera since I don’t have one, but I’m pretty photogenic so it’ll be quick!”

Even if she hadn’t been smiling before, the energy in her voice and movements told of the enthusiasm Annie was known best for. It was a small accomplishment, then, that the stranger’s teardown had managed to strip her of both. She looked offended, and for a second, hurt. Then she settled on offended – and defensive. Burying whatever constructive criticism he had to offer under cold comments and insults had, perhaps unsurprisingly, not gone down well.

“Wow. Okay. Cool. Thanks for getting my hopes up, but I think I would’ve preferred you just walking on like everybody else. Didn’t your mother ever tell you if you have nothing nice to say, then stay hush-hush and keep moving?” A Pokemon like Kit had known Annie well enough to know there was a problem if her face could be best described as ‘irritated’. He poked out from between the mannequins, or rather, his head, hair and neck did. The rest of his body should have been behind the doll, but there was no way that a beast of his size could be hidden by it. It was a tell-tale sign of an illusion at work, especially to somebody familiar with his kind.

An inquisitive look from her first Pokemon said enough. “It’s fine, Kit. I’m fine. I’m just not here to have some guy take a dump all over my opinion.” Joseph had earned dirty looks from both of them for his efforts.

The good news was that somebody finally gave her an answer. The bad news was that it was a pretty harsh one. The girl pulled a frown at his teardown of her two lovely costumes. “It’s a signature look!” She answered a bit too quickly and a bit too loudly, realising as much shortly after she’d spoken. When she continued, her voice was a little closer to a regular person’s volume. “When I’m on all the covers of Hoenn’s magazines, I want a style that says ‘yep, mhm, that’s Annie! Couldn’t be anybody else!’ What’s that one phrase about dressing for the job you want?” She ruminated for a few seconds before shaking her head of the thought.

“This one-“ She gestured to the ‘casual’ outfit. “Is less intense, but definitely not boring! Sure, it’s not the best winter wear, but if I can’t afford that then I’ll just slap some tights and gloves on this. There’s only, what, six weeks left of cold left anyway, right?” She’d survived that long in ‘autumn clothes’, and only thought she’d freeze to death twelve times! “Besides, you’re not giving me enough credit. These are colour-coordinated outfits made to match me. Plus, a really cool hat, because I’ve always wanted one.”

The little fox’s cry heralded an intensifying sun. The travelling pair both shielded their eyes from the harsh glare, Pancake hopping off her tail to use it as a visor instead. The Fennekin rushed in under near-blinding cover, stopped short of firing a Fire Blast by a Psychic stopping it in its tracks. If not for the mouse’s quick thinking, one or both of them might have been toast.

By the time Annie’s eyes adjusted, she could only see her partner holding their would-be attacker in the air. “Oh. Good thinking, Pancake! Don’t know what I’d do without you!” Pancake gave an approving coo. “Well, we’ve got this guy, and it totally looks like he gets what a fire team is about. How about it?” She wasn’t waiting for an answer, seeing as her target was already snared. In short order, he’d be another member of Camp Annie.

She’d heard it. A moment of surprise that lifted the mask. Was it the shock, or a red flag? She wasn’t sure, and more importantly, it didn’t matter. She’d already shown her little problem, and she doubted that she’d be allowed safe passage out until she explained it. Explaining it meant answering questions that were going to be increasingly uncomfortable, and her face showed that she knew as such.

She’d also given herself time to prepare to answer them honestly. It helped. A little.

“’Found’ isn’t the right word.” She paused again. Once she gave her answer, there was no going back… But it was the only way she knew to help it. “I made Frankie, not too long ago… From the plans Cotillard left behind. And I was kinda hoping you could help me figure out what I’ve built.” Only the beast’s eyes moved, switching its stare from trainer to scientist.
