Sylveon's misty terrain seems to have attracted the attention of a Swirlix; Florian watches as it entices Joli to play, rolling around in the sand.

"Ah, yes!" He perks up at the mention of home. "I was born there, in fact! I have only recently moved to Hoenn. Have you ever been?"

It was a beautiful region, popular with travelers, so Florian certainly wouldn't be surprised if he had.

They would likely have passed the Meowstic by entirely if not for a magical flurry of leaves that announces its presence.

"I did not know they could do that!" Checking data on his Pokedex suggests it to be nothing out of the ordinary. He takes a picture of the feline swaddled in its flurry of leaves, then moves on.

Initially saddened by the Ludicolo's soured mood, Florian is nevertheless willing to give Annie her credit: he watches as she starts up a rhythm with her clapping, and his worried features brighten into a grin.[break][break]

"Ah, she is a natural-born dancer," he says fondly. "As for mine... ah, it depends on their mood, and the day, and the weather..." He taps each of his fingers in turn as he lists off conditions, smiling all the while. "My Rapidash is a absolute nightmare with her pride, and my Ninetales can be a little aloof, but they are all sweet in their own ways."[break][break]

Like humans, all Pokemon had their individual personalities. While he'd always imagined owning an affectionate Alolan Ninetales, the ice queen that was Borealis was no less welcome in his heart.[break][break]

Though the professor visibly perks up at the sight of a Clefable, her evident disinterest in the pair of trainers keeps him from engaging further. Not all wild Pokemon wanted to be bothered, and that was fine with him.

Florian's too busy gushing over his new friend to notice the approach of the Chansey, and he feels guilty when she holds an egg out toward he and Joli.

He's trying to think of the most polite way to decline when his Sylveon makes the decision for them both, taking a bite out of the egg with a cheerful little trill.

Thankfully, Chansey doesn't seem upset when they decide to move on after a few minutes, merely waving her stubby little arms to bid them farewell.

"It is because of my schedule that I am here!" A sheepish laugh is accompanied by the hand that rubs at the back of his neck. "I have only just come to Hoenn, and it can be so hard to meet new people when you spend the majority of your time in the wilds!"

Of course, he hadn't signed up for romantic pursuits... he'd hesitated over the checkbox before skipping right over it and marking 'platonic only'. He wonders if the very reason for such a distinction was also here tonight.

A bell rings, and Florian looks surprised. "Oh, do they really only give you such a small amount of time?" Yes, it was called speed dating, but he feels as if he's only just sat down! "Ah, I suppose we must move on — but it was lovely talking to you, Dawn! I wish you all the best luck during your next competition!

"Joli! Where are you going?"

Florian's alarm sharpens his tone as he watches his partner disappear into the lush grass off the beaten path. He stares into the scenery as if he might gain the power to see through it (he doesn't) and runs a nervous hand through his hair.

He needn't worry: the Sylveon reappears a moment later with—

"— an Eevee!"

It's concern that he might scare off the little guy that keeps Florian from launching himself at it for cuddles, instead kneeling in dew-damp grass and holding out a hand for the Eevee to sniff. Knowledge of the species from raising Joli meant that Florian knew just the right spot to scratch the normal-type behind the ears. It flops over onto its side for belly rubs, chirping happily.

"Will you come with us, little one?"

EEVEE. GET. CHROME IF YOU CRASH AGAIN I'LL-

"Ah, see, this is why you are one of my favourites to follow!" There were plenty of coordinators who specialized in a single type, and Florian kept tabs on the progress of several fairy-type experts for obvious reasons, but Dawn was a true artist. "I think even a Steelix has beauty that it can show the world: potential, no?" They were terrifying, and absolutely massive, but that didn't necessarily make them unsuitable. "If you ever do decide to enter with one, I will most certainly watch."

He ducks his head at the compliment, flustered but appreciative. "Ah, I do not care for winning or losing, but I doubt I could say the same of my darlings. My Rapidash, especially!" The Galarian equine was incredibly self-centered: he can't imagine her affront if she were to lose. "My Joli just likes to show off," he adds of the Sylveon in his lap, "so I am sure he would enjoy it."

"Imfamous?" Florian echoes, a light laugh punctuating the word. Blush colours his cheeks. "I did not realise my name was known outside of Kalos; you flatter me!"

He couldn't bear to look himself up to figure out how much exposure his research was getting outside of his home region. Such things made him far too nervous, like a movie star watching their own films.

"I would love to judge a competition," he confesses, grinning. "I have even though of participating with some of my own, but I've been unable to find the time — there is always so much work to be done." The work of a field researcher was never truly done, after all. "As for what made me specialize... ah, I have always had a love for the delicate nature of fairy-types, but this one certainly played his part." The Sylveon in his lap chirps as Florian indicates him, carding a hand through his soft fur. "You have fairies of your own: were you drawn to their beauty and grace, as I was? They are certainly naturals in the coordinating scene."

A sweet scent heralds Florian's favourite time of year: early spring, where flowers bloom and each route sings with renewed life. He's on his walk home to Verdanturf but can't resist the urge to stop and smell the flowers, quite literally.

He releases his Ribombee into a swarm of her fellows, the darting fairy immediately drawn to a patch of sunflowers. He recalls how he'd met her as a Cutiefly buzzing about his very own garden of sunflowers back home in Kalos.

It seems that Abeille is trying to make friends with some of the other bees. Perhaps one would like to come with them...?

It's fairly loud in the contest hall, the chatter and laughter of many potential couples mingling with the clink of glasses and the occasional Pokemon cries. Such big crowds intimidate the professor, but the presence of the Sylveon trotting at his heels is enough to ground him.

He's a little late, in truth, because his anxieties had delayed his entry for the first round of match-ups.

It hardly diminishes when he's given a table and approaches it only to see — is that who he thinks it is?

"Allo," he greets the man with a broad smile, Kalosian accent colouring the word. He ducks his head almost shyly before resolving himself to ask, "Forgive me if I am being too direct, but you are Monsieur Grandier, no?" He'd heard whispers of the name when he'd been working up the courage to join in on all the fun, but he hadn't considered the prospect of being paired with him. He finally remembers that he's supposed to sit down: his Sylveon jumps into his lap and settles, purring like a cat. "I am no coordinator myself, but I like to follow the competitions. Professor Florian Laurel. It is lovely to make your acquaintance."

figured it was a safe bet that cadis was acting as dawn for this! can change if need be!

They come across another Applin, which his cheeky Sylveon decides to bat as if it were a toy. The creature hidden inside of the fruit gives a startled squeak, toppling its home in surprise.

"Joli!" Florian scolds, unable to help a burst of laughter. "What was that for?"

He gently rights the apple, murmuring apologies to the poor startled dragon hiding within. After assuring himself that it wasn't hurt, just alarmed, they move on.
