but the quietness picked back up again, and mcflurry was left looking for more pokemon in the endless snow. the arctozolt was nice and all, but — hm.

maybe it was telling, how she was more comfortable in a fight than with her own thoughts.

"y-yeah, it's, uh. to the east. and yeah, i get it..."

mcflurry hadn't been so good about the plane ride here from fiore herself, given her stomach was practically coiling in on itself the entire time.

the subject of delibird's present sometimes being an explosive also caught on, and mcflurry just laughed nervously, looking at her pokemon. the santa bird gave her a cheeky grin and a squawk.

"no! no, they don't. at worst, there's a s-sparkler set in there, but — no explosives. i-it's bad enough i specialize in ice types, mc, i couldn't imagine how bad it'd be if a charizard used fire blast on a bag like that..."

in the middle of fortree? probably a forest fire. and several million dollars of property damage. either way, mcflurry decided to show it off herself, picking up a present out the bag and showing it off.

"s-see? just a box of chocolates. n-normal stuff like, like that, mc."

she lost count of the time. all she knew is that it was dark and cold, and after some hours of losing herself in the bittersweet ice, she came across the disastrous-looking aftereffects of a rockfall.

her steelix was battered after trekking alongside her for so long, into such depths. her eiscue's ice face was shattered several times over before she had to retire him for this dive, too. even her glalie was looking worse for wear.

as she picked apart the rubble and bruised her hands on boulders she attempted to yank away, she felt the dead, burnt out fireplace in her heart suddenly have a spark, flickering back to life, albeit faintly.

compassion. she felt compassion again, because there was a little snorunt in front of her, bruised and bloody and weak, nearly crushed under a rock.

she suspected its parents were likely dead from the rockfall. along with a lot of other pokemon. but she picked it up and held it against her chest, where it nestled for the warmth that mcflurry swore wasn't there anymore.

her breath faltering, mcflurry choked back a sob and gently, ever so gently, pressed a poke ball to its head and began her ascent.

as she entered shoal cave for the umpteenth time, mcflurry noted that it was approaching the new year.

before, she would have been in a nice, cozy house with her family, sipping hot chocolate, talking to friends, making cookies, and lighting up sparklers. back in fiore. back home.

now, she's here, alone with her thoughts, with nothing but the ice to numb her body.

so she dove yet again into the cold abyss, hoping it would swallow her this time.
