BONE TO PICK - LANCE VOLLANS is her lifetime rival

[attr="class","mimi"]it does take her aback a bit, being called crazy. her gaze flies back to the stairs and, there, she gets over it pretty quickly. so what if she is a little bit crazy? nobody's completely sane. everyone has a sliver of that delightful insanity that keeps them going when everything else is too insanely sane.

what does upset her is hearing him say he's nothing special. she slows down. she frowns. she eyes him in disbelief. "you're very special, lance. you're amazing."

suddenly, she wants to let go of his hand because her eyes is kinda itchy and she wants to cover it. but for that she has to let go of his hand, which she doesn't want to do for a number of reasons, most notably that he'd then be too scared to keep going. this is what young mimi believes.

[attr="class","mimi"]a couple of sentences and she's satisfied, like she always is. lance has learned how to dance around the topic over the years without arousing her suspicion. steamed buns really are lance's favorite, after all. she pays no mind to the destination of her bamboo basket, instead examining the color of his cheeks. he's not looking pale anymore. maybe next time she'd bring vegetable-based dishes instead.

mimi waits until after lance's question to sit back on the armchair she'd all but claimed as hers. "why do you ask? don't tell me you're expecting someone." it's all jest, of course. mimi hasn't actually thought of how long she'd be staying just yet.

[attr="class","mimi"]mimi knew her sneakers were a good choice when she left her hotel room that morning, but this single moment makes her feel grateful she thought so then. she hears, rather than sees, the lucario being released from his pokeball with a click. at least nobody's hurt yet, she reasons, unlike her earlier run-in with these pirates.

she's almost about to suggest they hop on the dragonite's back and consequences be damned. the only thing that keeps her from doing so is that her pokemon may get hurt in the process. keep going, keep going, she chants in her head, certain that stopping at all would mean their ruin.

at last, there's a light at the end of the tunnel that she's desperate to reach. she's not sure if it's the sun or lars's shiny metagross, and in either case she's relieved. "we're close!" she makes sure to relay the good news to lars.

[attr="class","mimi"]"i... didn't," yunshi mutters under her breath. she's not certain of how to react; she was just trying to imitate the axew's moves. clearly she'd failed, and it's too embarrassing to admit it now. either that, or the axew doesn't know how bad he really looks dancing. then again, he took her earlier comment as a compliment. yunshi is just really confused.

like the axew's ears before, her antennae perk up at the mention and smell of food. "yes!" she answers excitedly, forgetting for a moment all the embarrassment she's felt since meeting vass. she smiles back at him and walks only a tiny little bit closer to him for their lunch. might as well share the shadow of the big tree. she would hate to tan just from dancing.

[attr="class","mimi"]mimi can clearly see lance's eyes on the floor, and that makes her frown. he's too busy looking at his feet to hear her at all. "you're not listening to me, lance," comes a needled remark.

they stop and she sighs, sliding her hands to the sides of his face to force him to look up at her. "it's because you're worrying too much. see, the good thing about slow dancing is you don't even need to move your feet much." slowly, she returns her hands to their place behind his neck. with an encouraging smile, she says, "how about i count along to the tempo, would that help?"

[attr="class","mimi"]even after having it reaffirmed twice, yunshi doesn't completely trust her antennae. her pose remains wary, and she keeps her distance from the axew as if any false movement could poison him. to be fair, it could. maybe he doesn't know and that's why he's trying to talk to her. maybe if she tells him so, he'll leave like everyone else does.

she's never tried to dance, so she doesn't know. she shakes her head no. "i don't know, but your dancing looks funny." maybe it's because his head is way bigger than the rest of his body, but it makes yunshi giggle. she tries it, too. to sway her hips like he does. the one problem is that she doesn't have hips, so it ends up looking like a magma lantern that was just turned upside down.

yunshi wants to hide away again, but there's only so many times she can turn into a ball before it gets tiring. is there?

[attr="class","mimi"]she supposes it makes sense. mimi never really thought about it that way. her life started in a small, rural town in sinnoh, and before she ever got a chance to look at the ugly, the next thing she knew were the flashing lights of a stage. she wants to ask how long hoenn has been dealing with these pirate attacks, but the moment passes too quickly and they're already running inside.

mimi only gets a quick glance at the metagross' masterful, no doubt practiced routine. it's suspiciously quiet when they reach the hideout, and still too quiet when they pass by tunnel after tunnel until something shiny catches her eye. "there, behind the glass!"

it's a wonder they've managed to install a glass wall inside a cove, but upon closer inspection she realizes it's a box. a lot like the ones used in museum exhibitions. mimi's dragonite gives it a good punch, allowing mimi to pick up her lost trinket from beneath the tempered glass. in that very moment, she sees the angry frown of a pirate appear from behind the shadows. uh-oh.

she looks over to lars, and the two pirates approaching from that flank. there's more coming, too. she can hear the footsteps.

"we should really get out of here."

[attr="class","mimi"]huh? yunshi couldn't possibly be hearing well. would she need to ask her trainer to bring her to the pokemon center later to look into her hearing? she looks up, it's just a little peek, but she gets to see a smile and it's the most confusing thing she's ever experienced.

"you're... you're not mad? she asks, honestly stunned. he's even introducing himself! the green of her eyes lulls into place, giving the appearance of focus. she almost forgets her own name. "my name is yunshi. are you really not mad?"

[attr="class","mimi"]the poke startles her. yunshi almost allows some of the toxins in her body to pool in the direction of the poke, and that scares her even more because she doesn't want to hurt anybody. instead, there's a screech and tumbling feet (does she have any feet?) and then a squeaky "d-don't come too close!"

realizing her actions may be taken as anything but what she truly means to convey, as they tend to be, yunshi withdraws into as small a ball as she can manage. "i'm sorry," she says, but she's not sure the axew can hear her.

[attr="class","mimi"]mimi has a problem. the sliggoo she's found lost at sea won’t talk to the rest of her team, no matter how much she's tried to convince her to. it just won't work. whenever they have a chance to set up camp and socialize before curry, whenever she takes her and another pokemon on a walk. yunshi won’t leave her side at all.

today, she has a different strategy. there's worry etched on her face when her baby sliggoo crosses the gate into the daycare. at the same time, this is mimi's last resort, and she hopes leaving her to interact with other pokemon without mimi's presence will have her loosen up a bit.

until then, the sliggoo can be found in a corner of the daycare, staring at a patch of tall grass as if the history of the world was written on it.

[attr="class","mimi"]she almost passes it, actually. mimi has to do a double take, because gastly is one of those pokemon whose shiny coloration isn't as obvious as others, like a dratini's for example. she's about to send her drampa in the wild gastly's direction, but her baby dratinis are so excited they dragon-rush to it before she can utter a single word.

the gastly manages to dodge one of their attacks, but the second hits it hard. mimi intervenes before things gets ugly. "sorry! they're a little too excitable. youths, you know. you could come train with us, though." an empty pokeball emerges from her pocket.
