she came here often; if not the physical location, then the cavern as she restructured it in her memory. she blinks away the grit, shields her face from the heat lashing her face.

standing at the lip of the entrance to the desert, persephone can see the remains of the ruins rising from the dust even through the unending and vicious sandstorm. it may be nothing now but a rock-strewn corpse that will erode over time as debris chips away at its surface, but that doesn't ease the knot in her chest.

going back isn't an option so much as an attempt at absolution, one action in a long-chain of events. it won't be enough.

She strangled the elastic band to her go-goggles, snapping the protective lenses into place.[break][break]

The roaring of the sands is familiar to Bailey Cooper. Beyond this windswept landscape, she could see Mt. Pyre loom in the distance, harking her home. While the officer felt no familiarity with the pillars that jagged out from the rolling dunes, she was familiar with their presence.[break][break]

“You can read that stuff, right?” The girl jeered a thumb to the strange carvings; what was gibberish to her was a clear language to another. “Looks like squiggly lines to me,” which was why she was here as muscle.[break][break]

Her gaze focused on the white crown of hair and how it draped itself over Persephone's shoulders; a veil. The woman had taken the lead.

persephone follows bailey's gaze to peer at the etchings, narrowing her eyes as though it'll somehow make them more visible through the swirling dust. while the goggles prevented buffeting her eyes, it did little for visibility of minute details like this.

she turns to bailey, mouth open as if about to speak, but stops herself for a moment to revise her words. surely she doesn't actually want or need her hypothesis that text on these jutting ruins near the entrance to the caverns is one which, with one reading, sang praise to the ancient pokemon housed below, whereas reading it in inverse instead featured a warning.

"i can read it, just barely," persephone says instead, almost shyly.

having company on an excursion is more than just a novelty. persephone can openly admit that it's a reassurance she needs here, of all places. it's not that her pokemon technically can't handle threats for her, but her team alone just doesn't feel like enough any more.

her lucario is released as a precaution, justified when the ground beneath their feet begins to shudder in a tremor indicative of an earthquake. the pokemon is quickly dispatched to deal with the threat and, through the lenses of her goggles, persephone can barely make out the shapes; the lucario pummeling a wild sandshrew into submission in close combat.

The earthquake roused more than just the ground.[break][break]

Bailey almost toppled when the ground quaked; her hands grasping the side of the very pillar they had been inspecting. Its presence kept her upright and unfazed as Persephone handled the wild encounter. The officer knew the Ranger was a skilled trainer. In all honesty, it made her wonder why she had been asked to tag along. She supposed it was power in numbers–the looming threat of Rocket weighed on everyone's minds.[break][break]

They had to be ready for anything.[break][break]

Which was why–through the shifting sands–Bailey was able to spy the emerging Palossand as it prepared to join the fray. “Nuh uh, nice try,” and she kept one hand braced to the pillar while she fetched a pokeball. “Come on, Turtonator!”[break][break]

And it was not a Turtonator. It was a Blastoise.[break][break]

One Hydro Pump lowered the ghost pokemon's health enough for her to throw an empty capsule; she needed more ghost types.

they just can't catch a break.

persephone opens her mouth to continue her monologue but is cut very pre-emptively short. she's not superstitious enough to believe that the apparent onslaught of wild pokemon is the universe's way to prevent the nearing the ruins, but the thought does cross her mind.

some type of plant-like flickers out from a dune — vine whip or power whip, persephone can scarcely tell the difference — aiming at her lucario.

the pokemon takes the first hit because he wasn't expecting it, side-steps the next one and wrangles the pokemon from its hiding spot by yanking at the tentacle-arms with a snarl, countering the damage done back to it. he consciously holds back.

persephone looks to bailey, waving a vague hand at the scuffle as though offering it to her. if she doesn't want the pokemon, the lucario will release the squirming beast into the sandstorm.

The winds rippled through the valley, bringing the sand to fly against them with a renewed vigor; Bailey watched as her go-goggles struggled to see through the millions of granules as they ripped past her face, making it almost impossible to watch the battle that unfolded in front of her.[break][break]

Turtonator was withdrawn back to his capsule; the weather had grown worse far faster than any of them could have anticipated.[break][break]

When Persephone signaled to her, it was almost obscured as the dunes rippled. It was like the dessert was preparing to reform itself before their very eyes–like this was a sandbox and someone was carving a new landscape with a drag of their fingers.[break][break]

“We need to bail!” The Officer ran through the winds, pushing against them and then against Persephone as her hand caught her upper arm; a light grip, but her intentions were made clear. “We can't excavate if this gets any worse!”[break][break]

Sand got in her mouth, making her sputter as she prepared to make a hasty escape.[break][break]
