fernando bites back with a prompt, curt answer to his observation. as much as the league's stance on his positions irks him, he won't allow them to paint themselves as collaborators. collaboration is a two-way street and they've tossed him into one-way traffic. only the stand still traffic of bureaucracy shelters him from an inevitable collision.

"if you have morningstar and valeria's support then cole is of no consequence. open with all three of our approvals and he'll have no choice but to concede, not that he'll oppose it."

the comment about kim cole-essam goes ignored. there's no point in reaffirming what very few people know. the testy nature between them is a sight left unseen, if only one-sided. dinner does little to dilute that disillusion.

"stability. i want a strong foundation before moving forward. progress is bottle necked by those that have no measure in involving themselves but things are proceeding smoother then projected. "

fernando talks about stability during a time that does not allow for it. in that regard, the silph heir is an optimist. he has a clear vision of the future in his head and he projects it in his actions. but, that vision is what fernando wants the public to see. there are always hidden agendas.

alexander is no different.

"stability comes from trust, which is something the league struggles with. so my next question to you, councilman, is do you trust your foundation enough?"

keyword: enough. there will always be doubt--like the doubt that hangs in the air between them right now. but what matters is being able to see past it, even if only temporarily to achieve a greater cause.

fernando can feels his eyes narrow at his own answer. something about having to face so many league related questions outside of their jurisdiction feels wrong. the way alex phrases them seems all too familiar. it's almost as if their positions are reversed, stone taking up his mantle while doling out LILLIAN GLASS 's position onto his own.

he permits it because stone has already paid the price. not alexander. the other one.

"but i trust in what i see being built before my very eyes. nothing is immediate but the pieces are lining up. it helps having your hand already entrenched in it."

more than a hand -- alexander is knee-deep into league affairs despite not wanting to be but to ensure the safety of his people, he must be. isolationism might have worked for him in the past but policies need to adjust depending on the situation, and right now, the situation calls for a more friendly approach to his fellow league members, even if he does not trust them yet.

so is the case with councilman silph, though his concerns are well masked under his facade.

"the pieces might not be lining up fast enough," he comments but dismisses it with a soft sigh. "i will pay a visit to councilman cole soon enough. after that, i assume the changes are immediate. we cannot waste more time, councilman, more than we already have." little does he know of Alison Vincent, who's set to take over petalburg.

the meeting starts to come to an end. closing his briefcase, alexander leans forward in his seat for a moment before speaking. "one more thing: the position in lavaridge. i know you disapprove, but the position should go to miss silph."

alexander watches the man carefully, realizing he's treading on dangerous grounds.

now he's just wasting his time. nothing of substance is said and alexander seems to talk for the sake of hearing his own voice. it reminds fernando of his own father and the parallels are uncanny. funny how the world works, how one minor change make the difference between two mirror images.

"nepotism is frowned upon."

he's apathetic to the comment. the rumors between stone and silph are true. it irks him at a fundamental level but that too is fine. alexander can have the shoddy brat and in return fernando will run rampage on stone's blood - both of them. one will spill it while the other gives it willingly. revenge is justice and behind it all is a fragile, petty man.

"and gym leaders who cannot stand to finish a battle without a panic attack are far from reliable."

fernando crosses his arms, glancing at the monitor above both of them momentarily before returning his attention to his guest.

"show her how to take care of herself before burying her under the responsibility of a city."

interesting. fernando's response is expected but there is a hint of vigor that's not; it almost catches alexander off guard. almost. the rocky foundations of the silph family have never been a secret to him but only now does he realize how truly terrible things are.

"failure is a great motivator."

alexander notices how silph's attention is divided. such a busy man he must be; to be both councilman while trying to rebuild silph co to what it once was. he's had help no doubt, but a man like fernando can only accept as much as his pride is willing to.

will he accept this?

"i would be in your debt."

to both fernando and alexander, they know that such a statement never comes lightly. essentially, alexander is laying his pride on the line, compromising and putting himself in a position where he could potentially be taken advantage of.

regardless of silph's answer, alexander has laid out the base of securing stormy the lavaridge position. despite fernando's strong disagreement, there's not much else he can do.

"motivation paves the path to success. recognition comes after proven success not before, mister stone."

the fact that stone is putting himself on the line shows that he has a stake in it that fernando can't quite comprehend. what hold does she have on him? why her? there's an endless list of possibilities but none of them make sense. fernando can't discern the logic behind the request which proves both fascinating and powerful.

the simplest method is to ask.

"why?"

he pauses, stopping himself from speaking if only to better formulate his next question.

"why do you want her to be lavaridge's gym leader?"

why? and there it is: not a denial but a question that both of them know will go unanswered. like two sides of the same coin, they share similarities that go beyond the usual. the only difference is what they choose to show and right now, alexander chooses nothing.

"patience is a virtue. i suppose you'll just have to wait and see, fernando."

alexander stands, briefcase already in his hand, and smiles politely. "thank you for meeting with me. will that be all?" regardless of silph's answer, alexander turns to leave. his footsteps echo across the deafening room as he stops by the door, lingering to turn back to look at the councilman.

"you know how to reach me."
