fernando presses one last key on his keyboard before emptying his seat. a brush of his pants is enough to crease out any wrinkles that may have formed from shuffling around in his seat.

"if the council will let you try?"

it's about time he settles this once and for all. every exchange, every encounter, it all ends with the same result: an aggravated stormy that's deterred by the cutthroat nature of his words. this time will be different. to spare the rod is to spoil the child. if she wants to prove herself then she'll have to face a trial by hellfire - just her specialty.

"prove yourself."

fernando ignores her and moves toward the door.

"beat me in a full on pokemon battle and i will make sure you get your seat."

he expects her to accept because she doesn't know better. from what he can gather, stormy isn't one to back down from a challenge. that's why he doesn't wait for her verbal acceptance. he's heading to fetch his pokemon and make for the main battlefield.

It's his eyes that scare her the most. They're frozen forever in ice that she can't melt. They hold her own, fiery depths with a cool calmness that shocks her to the core.[break][break]

The last key he presses seems to echo in the back of her head because what he says next instills a fear she's not yet come face to face with.[break][break]

Her mouth opens as if to protest, but she holds herself back. To deny him this request is to shut the door on him forever. He isn't asking something that's impossible, even if it is for her.[break][break]

Although she hasn't admitted it to herself, or maybe she just doesn't see it, she isn't ready to be a gym leader. The trauma of war has frozen her courage, prevented her from moving on with her life.[break][break]

Fernando leaves without looking back, assuming she would accept his challenge. And, of course, she did.[break][break]

But in truth, his walking away feels like he's shut her out again. That this is just his way of shutting her up temporarily. [break][break]

Stormy gives chase, briskly walking to try and keep up with his pace. It's lucky that she carries her team with her on the regular.[break][break]

fernando walks down the walls in absolute confidence. the only change to his measured path is the raise of his wrist to his mouth. there's a smart watch adorn on his wrist and he taps the screen, talking into it. "cila, clear my schedule. i have a battle in the exhibition battlefield. have the core team ready for deployment."

"ok. team en-route. will be ready to battle in three minute."

that's all he needs to hear. skip the barracks. fernando heads straight to the field itself. "make sure to bring project two point o. i've yet to see it handle in battle."

that's the last remark he makes before he enters the courtyard. the battlefield is held in the sparring room of the eastern building and away from the rest of the administration building. it doesn't take long to get there.

fernando opens the double doors to the giant battlefield. it's plain but wide enough to fit even the largest of combatants. several league members own some variant of the onix line and they've expanded the field to accommodate accordingly. inside, a cart lays in the middle of the field with a variety of pokeballs placed on a tray. their undoubtedly his. they number in the dozens and each one is marked with an alpha numeric characters.

Stormy watches him as he walks. He has such poise, such confidence. There's no way he breaks a sweat, not likely even in a dead sprint. This man is sheer ice, untouchable, unbreakable.[break][break]

She doesn't hear him clearly when he speaks into his wrist. At first, she's stunned as to who he's even talking to. It's not like she knows anything about where his Pokemon are.[break][break]

It doesn't take him long to reach the battlefield. She's not far behind. For a moment she marvels at how big it is. It's nothing like what she'd seen at the Morningstar estate. The battlefields there were more open, more beautiful. This almost looked like a prison yard.[break][break]

She reaches a hand out to stop the swinging double doors from hitting her in the face. Stormy slides past them easily, swiftly. There's a prickle of dread that buries itself like a parasite in the back of her neck. She's not going to win this fight.[break][break]

The way he walks, talks, presents himself - scares her.[break][break]

He's dangerous, she can see that now. In his element, even without Pokemon on the field, he's deadly. He's terrifying.[break][break]

"You can start."[break][break]

Stormy hasn't released any of her Pokemon yet, but her guess is that he already knows what Pokemon she trains, and he already knows how to beat her.[break][break]

fernando doesn't take long to pick out the pokeballs he needs. he already has a grasp of the situation and knows which pokemon he needs. his objective is total domination - the same one that he had spared her from at the hands of team rocket. it's time to have her pay for her ungratefulness.

each pokeball is holstered onto his belt. only when he has six does he leave the cart. he grants stormy the closer end of the field and walks toward his end. it doesn't take long for him to lob the pokeball forward and toward her.

it's none other then his charizard.

the mighty beast stares back at stormy. the sizable pokemon is kept afloat by the constant upheaval of air by the dragon's mighty wings. it seems to recognize her but makes no move toward sparing her. there's only one reason the pokemon's been called forth.

The wind from the Charizard's wings causes her hair to lift. She shields her eyes from the dust that he brings forth, small whirls of sand and grit being kicked up when he was summoned. [break][break]

It's the same Charizard she met when Fernando had come to rescue her. The same one that had allowed her to ride his back, to take her to safety.[break][break]

He's changed, she can see that immediately. There's no sense of curiosity left in the beast. No hint of innocence, of trust. Fernando has wiped his slate clean, and she's afraid to know how.[break][break]

"He's.. wow."[break][break]

What she says is a compliment, an expression of awe. If her own Charmeleon becomes anywhere near as impressive as he is, she'll have been blessed.[break][break]

The woman takes a step back as she unholsters her own pokeball. In a brief flash of light, Rapidash is revealed. The stallion snorts, his diamond hooves immediately tapping the ground in an act of preparedness. Out of all of Stormy's Pokemon, he's easily the best fighter.[break][break]

Stormy doesn't break eye contact from the Charizard though. It's almost as if she's grieving for the conditions the poor soul has had to face. [break][break]

"battle routine set."

the call is a common one and comes forth without hesitation. the charizard knows the command well. when given permission, it will operate at will, eliminating the current threat with extreme prejudice. this is no different then any other match up. there is no compassion on the battlefield.

"execute."

choosing rapidash is a tragic, an unknown mistake. his vast army of pokemon is known but what it's compromised of is a secret. many of his pokemon have yet to be called upon in person. they train, naturally, but pairing them with fernando is reserved for those that make it past the vigorous regiment he puts them to. a rapidash is among their ranks and he knows the pokemon well.

on paper, there's no way he'll lose. the charizard knows this as well, having spared with the opposing fire type as well.

FLASH FIRE is the biggest obstacle the charizard will have to handle. no matter how many times it tried to set the opposing pokemon on fire with an INFERNO, the equine remained unfazed. in an actual battle, the charizard will not make the same mistake.

it rises, taking off with a mighty flap of its wings to create distance between them. the rapidash may boast a quick ground speed but in the air it is powerless. the BOUNCE fernando's rapidash used had caught the charizard off guard once but never again.

it climbs until the self imposed limit of the arena's roof keeps it from going any further. from above, the pokemon circles like a vulture, keeping in motion. standing still is a beginners mistake and one that fernando's beaten them into avoiding. those who stay still get hit and pain is the best teacher.

a blue aura starts to emanate from the charizard's pudgy belly. it forms as a blue flame that forms in the pokemon's open maw. a blue fireball of DRAGON RAGE comes down in three separate blasts. the first one is targeted slightly ahead of the rapidash, lining up the subsequent shots as they trail forward, one at the pokemon and one behind it.

it anticipates the pokemon to move to avoid the hit and plans accordingly. the pokemon quadrupedal anatomy make moving forward the optimal and easiest choice. pivoting, while acceptable will let it turn in either direction, but takes an extra movement. will that be too much? probably not, but the pokemon attacks accordingly, going for the optimal route.

Stormy has always been a friend to Pokemon. Her own skills are vastly inferior to Fernando's and it's obvious in the way her face seems to pale immediately. Terror, a cruel wash of anxiety turns her stomach into a vat of acid.[break][break]

Rapidash is unfazed. He stares at the Charizard with a level head. His long legs have carried him through war, through death itself. The stallion is riddled with vicious battle scars. He knows what it means to fight for your life.[break][break]

Stormy jumps, her hands clenching into fists when Fernando utters 'execute.'[break][break]

Rapidash does not. He is here to protect Stormy at all cost, just as she had rescued him. Granted, this wasn't a life or death battle, but he knew better than to trust another Pokemon in battle.[break][break]

In fact, he doesn't break eye contact even as the Charizard rises to the air. He snorts as if somehow amused that that beast he faces thinks he can escape just because he's airborne. Charizard will have to meet him on the ground at some point to do any real damage.[break][break]

Even when the belly of the beast brightens with an ominous blue glow, Rapidash continues to stand still. He doesn't move even as the dragon rage engulfs him in blue flame. He's felt much worse.[break][break]

The stallion shakes off the blue flames. Although they stung, he had prepared for it. He isn't afraid of pain.[break][break]

Stormy's heartbeat quickens, eyes dart from her Pokemon to Charizard. [break][break]

Rapidash gives his head a shake, stomping a hoof firmly in the dirt. Assuming he's caught the Charizard by surprise to some extent, he decides that it's time to do something. He doesn't possess any moves beneficial to combating a flying opponent, but he does possess speed.[break][break]

He uses agility to race across the terrain, as if running away from the Charizard.[break][break]

the first attack lands only because the rapidash lets it. that won't happen again, not when it moves so swiftly on the battlefield. the charizard is ready to swap attacks. FLAME BURST spreads on contact, erupting into a wide spray of fire. but, the charizard knows better then to use a fire attack. the FLASH FIRE makes it impervious. with little choice, charizard is ready to attack again. there's no way it'll give up its aerial superiority. it'll have to keep blasting the rapidash with DRAGON RAGE from above until it lands a lucky shot.

"blind it."

fernando provides the hint that the pokemon needs and charizard is quick to catch on. with an annoyed exhale, the pokemon spews out a thick SMOKESCREEN from above. the black smog obscures the field with a dense layer of soot that makes it hard for either party to discern the other. while the rapidash may part the SMOKESCREEN by moving, therefore giving the charizard some semblance of where it is, the pokemon opts for a different approach.

with the rapidash presumably unable to see the charizard and therefore the attacks, it continues to bombard the field in a series of DRAGON RAGE blasts. accuracy doesn't matter. all charizard has to do it keep up the assault. surely it'll hit eventually.

or so the charizard reasons.

His hooves pound the ground with precision. He knows each step he's about to take, he knows what his plan is. Charizard are temperamental beasts, and very impatient. He will wait for his opportunity.[break][break]

Stormy is surprised to see her Pokemon take the first hit, to stand there, unwavering and defiant. She's known him for many, many years, but he still impresses her. [break][break]

Rapidash isn't surprised, necessarily, by the smoke screen. But the fact that the Charizard also cannot see him is what is interesting. However, the Rapidash takes advantage of this. The flying beast isn't using his fire-based attacks to try and stop him - which indicates he knows that it's futile.[break][break]

He will have to use his own flames to embolden himself then.[break][break]

With the smokescreen in effect, the entire field is covered in thick, black smoke. It's difficult to see through and smell through, the tang is acrid and painful. But it's exactly what he needs to start a fire.[break][break]

Charizard is firing at random, but the Rapidash has stopped moving. He's faster than Charizard and can easily out-maneuver his blind aim. [break][break]

His hooves glow with intensity as fire builds up beneath him. He conjures up a fire spin, a vortex of flame surrounding his body. It sets the whole field on fire in that instant, like an explosion. The smokescreen burns away immediately and is absorbed in Rapidash's body. He seems to glow with imbued power, smoke trailing from his nostrils. [break][break]

The stallion stomps his hoof again as if taunting the Charizard to come to him.[break][break]

restlessness is for the untamed. charizard was one of them too, once upon a time. it takes repeated punishment, showing the pokemon the fault of the vice, to teach it to avoid that. pain is a deterrent and the charizard has no qualms with waiting it out. fernando's taught it well and each time it was punished for rushing brings the pokemon to play a cautious game.

any advantage, no matter how little, is one small step toward victory.

the overall ineffectiveness of the SMOKESCREEN convinces the charizard not to try again. the pangs of heat that lick at the dragon pokemon are uncomfortable but don't cause too much harm. it continues the barrage and readies up another flurry of DRAGON RAGE.

fernando is patient but starts to strum along a new tactic. charizard has a new move in its repertoire but he's not sure if it's ready to whip it out. for now, he holds, not until he calculates just how effective the move will be.

It's time.[break][break]

Rapidash knows that he's running out of opportunity. The Charizard refuses to come down from his security, the beast too cowardly to face him as equals. But there's a moment, albeit brief, where the stallion sees his chance to strike.[break][break]

He's uncomfortable with the flames caused by his own error, and that little bit of distraction is worth it.[break][break]

The Charizard sucks in another breath, aiming to take down the Rapidash with another flurry of dragon rage. He's boring, uninteresting, using the same assault over and over. He'll burn out quickly doing that.[break][break]

It's what he's counting on.[break][break]

The moment the beast unleashes his attack, Rapidash has used agility to run through it. His horn seems to glow with intense power, the flames in his mane exploding in a super-charged FIRE BLAST. The flames explode in contact with the dragon rage, and while in part it scalds his skin, he's pushing past it. [break][break]

At the moment of impact, he's kicked up off the ground. His body arches in the air, his flames intense, wild. His horn grows in size just as the flames break apart, expelling some of the rage. It turns a ghastly shade of purple just as he goes in for a MEGA HORN-POISON JAB.[break][break]

Stormy gasps, watching in awe and in horror as her Pokemon charges.[break][break]

thank god for the distance that comes from creating a buffer between them. the rapidash chooses the right moment, the right tactic to cross the unmovable wall that is contending with a ranged aerial unit with a grounded melee combatant. however, charizard has a trump card for that.

the rapidash leaps, no longer able to change it's trajectory now that it has no footing to pivot off of. unless it has a move to do so, one that charizard is unaware of, the pokemon is now a sitting duck. a speeding, rampaging, strong duck, but a duck nonetheless.

the attack strikes true but the charizard is ready for it. the horn pierces the charizards skin and digs into the flesh that is between the pokemon's chest and where its arm connects to its torso. the seedy purple energy starts to seep into the pokemon. but the rapidash will not leave unhindered. this is the perfect chance for the charizard to COUNTER. the momentum of the attack, of the hurtling rapidash is used against it. the charizard starts to plummet and the speed of gravity is used as a fulcrum to increase the impact of the pokemon's weight.

the pokemon falls and clasps onto the rapidash's neck with a pair of DRAGON CLAWS. lanky but sharp, the charizard will use its talons to keep hold as it uses its body to slam down onto the pokemon in a makeshift bodyslam. the impact of the fall will only drive the sharp talons deeper into the opposing pokemon's flesh.

There was a fatal flaw in his attack. While he had expected the Charizard to retaliate, he had hoped that he was the stronger Pokemon. He wasn't.[break][break]

His horn meets flesh, tears through it, punctures deep in his opponent's shoulder. The poison has seeped, it drains some of oomph in his retaliation -but barely. Poison doesn't stop attack power like a burn does.[break][break]

The full force of Rapidash's attack is thrust upon him, doubled. Charizard's counter throttles him in midair, and because he has no real vehicle of escape, he thrashes. This probably weakens him more, leaving him wide open. The two barrel toward the ground at a breakneck pace, claws sink deeper and deeper into the nape of his neck.[break][break]

Stormy cries out in terror as blood stains the ground beneath. The impact of the two becoming locked in claws and wings and fire is intense, it rattles her to the bone.[break][break]

Rapidash is squealing in pain, his eyes wild as he kicks out his hooves. Fire engulfs him as he tries to escape, to tear himself away from the Charizard's claws. He can't seem to get his feet out from under him, however, and soon succumbs to his defeat. He may be faster, but he isn't stronger.[break][break]

"Let him go! Get off!"[break][break]

Stormy, without warning, flies across the field. Her footsteps kick up dust as she races to her fallen friend. Her hands reach for Charizard's wing, attempting to rip it away so she can see the damage he's done.[break][break]

"Get away from him."[break][break]

There are tears in her eyes, her hands are shaking. This is what she had expected, to be beaten in battle. But she hadn't expected the blood. She hadn't expected the brutality. This wasn't a war, this was a practice fight.[break][break]

Rapidash rests his head in her lap should she have removed the dead weight on his body, too weak to get back to his feet.[break][break]
