ogether with cait alfric. she and he were returning from a mission. a shortcut was being taken to get back down mt. chimeny. "that was a pretty simple mission. with time to spare we should be able to carry out the rest of our day!" a cheerful tune. he couldn't wait to get back to lilycove and start a new round of gambling. looking back, he'd call out to her, "mother nature, hurry up or i'll leave you behind." he called out to the caramel skinned beauty. "i'm sure you can't wait to get back to watering your plants, right, cait?" arian chimed. looking over his shoulder and teasing the greenette.

"i'd love that," cait sighed, exasperated.

the young woman had lagged behind somewhat, her shoulders partly slumped and a frown marring her freckled face.

"gods, i can't wait until i get back to the gym. i'm so done with work for today."

the moment she returned she'd change into a fresh top and pants, take some pain medicine to remedy the ache that coursed throughout and tend to her garden. cait marveled at the similarly-aged man's energy, but she supposed her tiredness could be partly blamed on her being unable to sleep the night prior.

"i never liked the mountains," she remarked. "it's just so dry and hot here. right, girls?"

her mantis trio trailed behind the pair, their postures and the expressions they wore resembling their mistress's.

'i hate to leave them out,' she thought. 'but i also need to expose them to places like these.'

ooking over his shoulder. he'd chuckle and say, "you're such a girl." for someone who played with grass-type he thought she'd be accustomed to harsh terrains or something. had she no desire to be close with the earth? "aren't you a gym leader that specializes in grass? i guess that isn't anything compared to a jungle, i guess. so it's understandable as to why you feel that way when i think about." a childlike hum. he wasn't sure what sort of training cait did, but considering lilycove's city was a big place. he and his siblings used it for parkour exercise. tiring, but fine and great on the stamina.

"you should come to lilycove, we'll help build your stamina caitty cat." he nicknamed the female. smiling as the duo would bypass a primape and chinchou minding their own business. leaving the group be had they chosen, too, chosen to leave them be.

the alfric line were often compared to lilligant due to their supposed inability to adapt to certain environments. when it came to the forest and lengthy stretches of plain, the young woman experienced a surge of energy that almost felt as though she could keep going forever.

"oh, shush."

she forced herself to hurry along her steps, her pokemon struggling to keep up but still managing to do so as they released various noises of complaint.

"and this isn't anything like the jungle," she commented. "it's barren and covered in ash."

the stuff had clung to her flesh in thin layers, and cait felt as though she'd have to give herself a good wash to rid herself of the substance.

"how's that gym of yours, anyway? i really do need to pay it a visit one of these days."

ooking over his shoulder once more, he'd smile softly, "the gym is going pretty fine." turning to fully face her, hands on hip, "though, honestly, it can get so tiring. do you know how many people have challenged me? they either lose to me in a gamble or the battle. i need stronger challengers." hands upon hip, he'd look toward the shimmering sun that began to hide behind puffy, white cloud. a shadow casting over them, "and then mister fernando is coming to inspect my gym soon. so that's gonna be a hassle, why did my brother have to push this duty onto me. i was promised fun challengers for my games, and all i've gotten are people who can barely handle the wager. i feel so bad for them half of the time that i just rectify the entire bet." he had a heart. he wasn't as ruthless as people made the grim dealer out to be.

how did he even earn this moniker to begin with? he was just a guy who enjoyed gambling. that's it. "oh?" a loud battle cry was made. "what's that noise," he asked, pausing to get a clearer look. as arian followed the sound, he'd come to see around the mountain corner the clashing of a combusken and gallade! "hoh!" eyes lit ablaze. "i-it's a gallade and combusken!" a pokemon enthusiast, he wanted the both of them. "i need your assistance, cait; help me capture the two of them! i could definitely use them in my future games!" the moment that the word 'catch' was heard did the duo pokemon face the both of them.

arian, filled with glee, threw out haunter's respective pokeball. "come out, haunter! use confuse ray!" and the second haunter appeared upon the battlefield, it would appear facing the gallade. nearly five feet away, it would radiate a blue glow from its eyes. "if i were you i'd look away from this little mischievous guy, haha." before gallade could react, it would be come susceptible to confuse ray. the gallade was now confused.

"let's hit it hard with shadow ball." snapping his finger, gallade would be met with a dark sphere to the gut. causing it to be smacked into the combusken. "let's wrap this up with a pokeball, shall we?" throwing a ball at the head of the gallade. it would come to be absorbed the next, eaten by a beam of crimson red energy. the ball shook in wait of being captured. all that was left was the capture of combusken.

cait structured her gym simply and it sported a more 'traditional' layout because of it. all that was expected of her challengers were rudimentary skills involving memory and some time management as well as a sense of direction.

"maybe if you - "

her suggestion to dumb down his establishment's games for those whom weren't intellectually-inclined came to an abrupt halt. it appeared as though a pair of pokemon - which cait had no interest in - had made an appearance. coin was positively star-eyed the moment they came into view, and had requested her assistance.

"fine," she said. "but you owe me, coin. pokeballs aren't exactly cheap."

despite her choice of words capsules were indeed very cheap, especially since she was rewarded discounts in exchange for her quality service.

"girls. it's your time to shine. the combusken is what we want, alright?"

they'd nod and glance at one another, their voices barely above that of a whisper before scyther stepped forward to handle the fire-type. while naturally disadvantaged due to their typing, the skirmish lasted for a decent chunk of time. and while scyther managed to whittle down the combusken, she'd suffer from a burn that rendered her terribly weakened.

"that should do."

cait tossed her own capsule with the intention of acquiring the dual-type.

aising the ball of his new catch. he'd gleefully turn to face the greenette. "hey, i owe you a new ball and some food at the casino--on the house of course!" think of it as a way to say 'thank you'. standing before them were a claydol and, "a hovering fish?" he watched with shock as the pokemon casually levitated before them. was it the claydol or the fish's doing?

"i've never seen a pokemon like that before; so cool." he spoke with an entrapped gaze. "seriously, never seen a pokemon like that around these parts. do you think they're more of these around here somewhere?" pointing with one hand like a child at the first, and his other arm risen to his chest. arian wasn't sure as to how he should exactly approach the pokemon. of course it wasn't on his list, but it was a levitating fish! "the little ones aren't going to believe me when i tell them about this." arian commented, speaking of his younger siblings.

"i've never seen anything more unnatural in my li - ."

she'd fall abruptly silent and stared blankly at the fish, flashes of a recently suppressed memory coming to mind.

"let's - uh - let's just keep moving, coin."

the young woman gently nudged her awed companion onward for the sole purpose of putting some distance between them and the hovering fish.

"so how's life been in lilycove? good, i hope?"

hat was a fascinating experience. truly a fascinating experience. and so they continued onward down the path. he was asked a question by his comrade, cait, only to be caught off guard by a male meowstic staring off into the distant. he sat upon the ledge. staring without a care in the world. a questionable head tilt wondering just what was wrong with the little guy.

"hold that thought..." he'd run off to check on the pokemon. "hi there! is everything alright?" the psychic remained still. "ooh, how quiet..." he stated with curiosity. "hey! anyone home?" the pokemon, still, didn't respond. "...it's so frozen." pulling out a pokeball, and enlarging it, he'd say, "i'm gonna catch it!" and thus smacked the ball atop of its head. it was, then, absorbed by a beam of red energy. there was no fighting. no argument. he just captured it.

the pokemon was just...broken.

returning back to stand next to cait, he'd casually say, "i think i'm gonna take this little guy and see if Rhian McArthur can figure out whats wrong with it. it doesn't move or anything." little did he know, the meowstic was merely in deep thought, wondering as to where its lover, or rather other half, could be. "anyway, where were we? lilycove is bustling as always. it's hard to find the time to sleep when dealing with trainers all the time though." a big sigh. he'd raise his right hand. swinging it as if he were trying to swipe away a fly. "it's not that i don't enjoy the job or anything, but it'd be nice to deal with someone who's...exciting; a trainer that can really appreciate the work i put into creating the challenges for my gym and not give up so quickly."

"i think i'll try my hand at playing a few of your games."

cait was rather fond of them and she did have a small taste for gambling, the addictive thrill involved causing her to indulge occasionally. card games were also a personal favorite of hers, especially since the rules were relatively simple and easily understood.

"just so i can see what makes those trainers of yours give up so easily," she elaborated.

and the man did owe her a meal in exchange for catching that fire-type he had wanted. cait could only hope that the food served there was quality stuff and not something that had been frozen and warmed recently in an oven. but arian likely wasn't the type to cut corners - not even within the very kitchen that prepared meals for his patrons.

'i wonder what draws psychic-types here,' she thought.

her mind had wandered as they walked, her gaze swiveling to and fro before it eventually settled upon an idle figure mounted upon a rock. its head was swiveled in her direction, its remarkably blank expression causing her to frown in bemusement.

"that's a... xatu, isn't it?"

they began to pass it by before cait slowed to a gradual halt, the girl having locked eyes with the creature.

"i never really seen one up close before," she remarked.

cait approached it and it dipped its head in greeting, unperturbed by the woman's presence.

"i wonder if it'll let me catch it? it looks pretty docile - and i do need a few more psychic-types to help me around the gym."

the pokemon had yet to blink as she produced a capsule and give it a little toss.
