The indoor pond would have made for a lovely piece of artificial outdoors landscaping, if it actually had any fish swimming inside. As it is right now, though, it's a huge deterrent to renting an apartment in Mauville City, be it the Hills or anywhere else.

"You're telling me your security's been letting someone sneak in just to steal the pond's magikarp." Erin arches an eyebrow at the real estate agent, unimpressed. She may not have said this expressly, but the spaces between lines let ink spill through.

It's not until she mentions a reward being offered by the city hall to whoever caught the magikarp thief that Erin deigns the woman worthy of her attention again.

When Erin declares she's taking matters into her own hands, the woman proceeds to go on about how dangerous the task has proven to everyone who'd tried thus far and how the mayor insists that two people partner up. Whatever. Erin calls out to the next closest person she sees.

"Hey, you. Wanna catch this thief for fifty poké? Lady here's paying."

Mauville was one interesting city, that's for sure, and Goro hadn't even been there a whole day! He even found it interesting just walking alongside the roads and streets. Far more interesting than anywhere he'd been before; but, being from Orre, that wasn't saying much. So it was after an encounter or two with some wild pokemon that Goro found himself taking a breather on a bench next to a curiously empty pond.

Even more curious was the lady who asked him if he wanted to catch a thief. HIM. GORO, an actual thief. The irony was not lost on him and at the mention of money, neither was the idea of him actually going along to be this hero... for money. Always for the moneeeeey. Greedy, Goro got up and walked himself over to the two women and said, "I am always in to do the right thing!" He said with a flash of his pearly whites and the slightest Kalosian twang. Goro had decided then and there that Bucky was an outstanding citizen. Great guy all around, no defects, not a bit like Goro.

Was it believable? Eh. Did anyone in this city, or this region even, know him? No. So did it matter? Not at all.

"It's settled, then." Erin offers the real estate agent a cynical curtsey before she turns on her heels to get started. She's certain the act of picking just anyone from the crowd to help with this oh-so-dangerous task has her boiling from contempt and disapproval, which was the exact reaction she was aiming for.

There's a small smile on her face as she scans the greenery surrounding the pond. She isn't really bothered by how efficient or not the man turns out to be, either. Erin could be efficient enough for the two.

As if to silently demonstrate this point, the young woman has a pokéball out and the gengar residing inside called in the blink of an eye. "We're counting on you, Mars."

The gengar jumps ahead to inspect the crime scene, though not before directing an eerie cackle at the stranger. A greeting or a farewell? Only the gengar himself knew.

Mars does have a point, she supposes.

"Erin Caulfield," she offers, unprompted. Quick to take the lead. "Do you have a name, or should I call you Mr. Righteous?" This is no Rocket-issued mission and thus does not merit codenames, but she'd be damned if she didn't take this change to make a quip at the man's words.

"Oooh, a Gengar." Goro said with genuine amazement. It brought back memories of Orre and the sneaky pokemon they employed to well, destroy the lives of countless children. Good (?) times. Taking the hint, however, he pulled forth a pokeball of his own and glancing down at the pink tongue pokemon, he tossed it in front of him, exclaiming, "What's good, JB!"

A large oval pink pokemon with a huge tongue appeared, as happy as could be. It offered Goro a silly salute before looking around quizzically. Goro pointed towards the fountain and said, "We're looking for clues so, uh... Lick 'em up?" And the Lickitung did just that, running his abnormally long tongue across the perimeter of the fountain. With his pokemon doing... something potentially useful, Goro turned towards Erin and offered a cheesy grin and ruffled his curls back into place around his goggles. "The name's Buck Esterandé, but you can call me Bucky. Or Mr. Righteous. Whichever you'd like Mademoiselle Erin." He offered with a little wink at the end. Buck was from Kalos so might as well use some of that Kalosian language class he took for a year or two in high school to keep the gimmick going.

She doesn't try to fight her grimace at the sight of Bucky's distasteful pokémon. Pun definitely intended. Despite the man's cheerful greeting to the lickitung being admittedly quite endearing, it doesn't lessen its ugliness nor the impact of having to witness such an ugly pokémon.

Erin doesn't do regret—the whole mentality is set up for conformism and failure. But if given the chance go back in time and do anything to prevent her from seeing the lickitung, she would.

Laughter. Not malicious, but a short, good-natured laugh erupts from her lips at the man's introduction. "How many have tried to call you Mr. Right, I wonder?" she offers with a playful grin of her own. "Bucky will do."

[break][break]

If there was one moment in which Erin could say the real estate agent had been useful, it was when she defined the timetable of events to pay attention to. The robbery had taken place overnight, which meant a number of things, but the most important implication was that the thief could not have made it out of the mall during that time.

Furthermore, if none of the hundreds or even thousands of customers visiting Mauville today had seen it flee, chances were their little thief is hiding somewhere within the mall.

"We're looking for damp spots in the grass, be it from dragging the magikarp around, or slurping them whole," she explains to Bucky, not hoping for much other than for his lickitung not to tamper the scene with fake trails.

Goro couldn't help but smirk at Erin's comment. Mr. Right. HAH. His love life was full of regret, rage, and sorrow; there was never anything "right" about him getting involved. He'd play along of course. It wasn't every day you get someone falling for his wily - if not stupid - charm. "Bucky it is then." He quipped before listening on the very vague details his partner in NOT crime had to tell him. They were looking for something... wet. Okay, well, yes that made sense.

Speaking of wet and potentially useless, Goro turned his attention towards JB who was currently just licking away at the marble slab that made up the outer rim of the fountain. Almost like an ice cream cone. If it wasn't his pokemon he may have found the whole ordeal disgusting, but training pokemon with abnormally long tongues seemed to be a theme ~~curse~~ for him so Goro just went along with it. Approaching the pink chewed up bubble gum pokemon, he asked, "Got any kind of lead?"

JB promptly blew him a rather sloppy raspberry before using his tongue to draw the shape of.... a fish. A very basic symbol of a fish. That was it. Nothing else. Sighing and palm to his face, but careful not to mess with his goggles, Goro asked, "Anything else?" He looked back towards Erin with a shrug, this little fish fiasco was going to be more difficult than he thought.

Was it seriously drawing shapes with its tongue? Erin couldn't tell exactly what transpired between Bucky and his pokémon, but the movements she could see made for a rather concerning scene. She needs to step in.

"What's your pokémon doing?" She was pretty close to literally calling it a thing. Thankfully, she caught the word at the very tip of her tongue and reformulated it. "That... Did it see a fish?"

[break][break]

The possibility of finding the culprit and returning it to justice, she was already betting on. The possibility of also returning the magikarp? It seemed like wishful thinking, but if the lickitung had indeed seen one, their chances increased to almost favorable.

[break][break]

"Mars found some tracks that seem to lead upstairs," she answers for her pokémon. "That's the path I took to come to this pond in the first place and I saw nothing off on my way, so chances are a janitor already cleaned the rest of them off. Could be a start, though."

They could try to reconstruct potential routes the thief could have taken a-la-Sherlock, but right now Erin is, perhaps inadvisedly, more interested in the fish drawing.

Goro was rubbing at the bridge of his nose, his LIckitung blissfully unaware of what was going on as his tongue trailed along beside him encircling Goro in a saliva circle when Erin asked her question. He sighed and stated simply as he rose, "No, he tasted something... fishy." Albeit he was annoyed with JB's incompetence, Goro couldn't resist the pun. His smirk replaced the annoyed scowl from earlier as he added, "He didn't really give us anything helpful, so we may as well follow your lead." And the both of them promptly began to follow Erin.

Besides, she was the one who asked HIM to come along so, in Goro's mind, she needed to do the work. Plus, he was still feeling some kind of woozy hangover from the pokemon battle he had earlier.

If Erin notices the tinge of annoyance in Bucky's tone, she doesn't make any sign of it. Although she has to admit she's disappointed at the false trail, she can't say she expected much from the gross... pink ball, to begin with. This just reaffirms her initial assessment of the pokémon.

She turns on her heels in the direction of the stairs closest to where they stood.

Along the way, the pair would be able to see something akin to a trail of footprints, but made of water drops. Under a carefree gaze they would look like nothing unless one of them slipped on them, but if Erin squints she can see the glint of lighting shining through them. "Interesting."

Mars stops in his tracks right before reaching the staircase. That's where the trail ends. Which direction to go now?

"They looked more like water droplets than footprints to me. The culprit must have dove for the magikarp with long hands and carried them in their arms. There is a certain unevenness to them I can't really explain, though. It's almost like it had to stop every few steps to catch its breath."

Erin is no expert on biology, but that last part doesn't sound quite right unless the pokémon in question was hurt or something. From catching magikarp? She frowns. Does not sound right after all.

"Let's check upstairs. There's a garden on the last floor that looks like it would be perfect for hiding."
