In Hoenn it's summer all year round. This is true especially in Slateport Beach, where even the aftermath of terrorism is outshone by the sun, brilliant as ever, warming up the sand beneath her feet.

Looking at the beach now, Erin wouldn't have guessed an invasion took place only months ago. It's a relaxing sight. Almost peaceful, not counting the occasional brawl breaking out less than a mile away. The soundtrack to every good sunbathing session.

She stops far away enough from the city that she could no longer see any asphalt. The only concrete visible is shaped in a few tall buildings lucky not to crumble down during the fight.

Erin may not have been part of the activities herself, having joined the team only days ago, but she's heard enough from the Rocket branch still stationed in Kanto post-operation to know what to expect and what not to.

Free beach accessories is on the latter list.

Her gengar places a chair by her side; she, a towel for him to rest on. The parasol the gengar had been carrying in his other hand is planted between the two.

Erin closes her eyes. "Lovely weather, isn't it?"

The words are directed at a second person in their vicinity. Intentions unclear and a face she can't say for sure she recognizes, but there were only a handful of reasons why someone could be found in Slateport at this time.

for a man with so much power, to not be able to break free from the chains of his past that shackle him, holding him back, locking him in place, that is what keeps him human. even a small pebble in a rushing stream holds enough significance, and each day that pebble continues to grow and mutate. he can feel control slipping through his fingers and yet there's nothing he can do to stop it.

the beach he sits on is both the first and last place he visited when last in hoenn. his eyes gaze out at the strong waves that roll, cascading for moments before breaking, coming to an inevitable crash. he feels the warm waters underneath his feet, engulfing for moments before residing. it's hypnotic in a way: it holds his attention for what seem like forever.

until a singular voice breaks it.

"boring weather."

the fact that he didn't hear her is cause for concern that he rightfully chooses to ignore. her relaxed nature is a stark contrast to the ruined city that stands behind them in the near distance. perhaps that is why she holds his interest. or maybe it's the odd sight of a gengar on sand.

"it's always hot, but i'm guessing you aren't a native. or maybe you just like the sun far too much." he takes a moment to ponder. "which is it?"

She turns to the voice, drawn to his almost demanding tone as much as to the promise of an interesting mind. Observant, analytic, quite likely critical.

A moment passes. Erin uses it to admire the scenery, mysterious man included. She can't see his face, but the way he sits, feet resting where the riptide breaks, reminds her of a time when she'd drink and party without a care in the world. On the shore, where earth met the sea, she'd lose her senses to both the alcohol and the rhythm of the rising tide.

Her life—she—is beyond that.

"Who doesn't like the sun? It's the closest we are born to a star, and yet it's still too far, too bright, too hot. Unattainable until we rid ourselves of our personal limitations."

The myth of Icarus had always fascinated her so. It's a tale that teaches of gauging one's own limits, of safety in complacency. Daedalus never thought to build his wings with a self-cooling mechanism because of the technological limitations present in the time the tale took the narrative form it's known for now, just as present day technology struggles with a way to bring humans closer to the stars.

She glances over at her pokémon and laughs at the disgusted look on the gengar's face. Mars definitely doesn't like the sun; that's for sure. Erin lets herself ease back from the metaphorical plane.

"i don't like the sun."

two distinct memories come to mind:

a quiet day; he spends it in his student apartment, sick because he chose to stay out exploring the outskirts of slateport while it rained. now, he rests in his bed, awakening from a long nap. he notices how elegantly the sunlight seems to shine through the cracks in the curtains. it makes him feel peaceful.

a warm day; he spends it with dahlia goode, out at some local coffee shop because the both of them got sick of studying in a cramped-up library that only made them feel suffocated. he remembers the taste of the cappuccino, remembers the expression she always makes when deep in thought. he longs for the warmth he felt that day.

a laugh breaks him free from his thoughts, dragging him back into the present. he shakes his head, clears his throat, and grunts softly.

"you're a long way from home. picked a bad time to go traveling."

but she seems to be making the most out of it. finally turning his head just enough, he takes her in and her gengar. it's a dangerous pokemon and yet it's not the most threatening thing on the beach with them.

"you should go home soon. while you still can."

He seems to think she's only here for a trip and Erin doesn't bother correcting him. Given the circumstances of their meeting, she supposes it's a fair assessment. In reality, it's not entirely false and it would serve as a good cover, when it came down to it. When she left this city for new places to explore, to plunder, to perhaps even convert.

A warning. Out of concern or any other reason beyond what was immediately obvious, she can't tell. The warning may not be totally unwelcome, but it sure would go unheeded.

"I have things I want to do here first." Erin turns back to the man and is surprised to catch him looking at her. Talking to a back felt easier. Still, she doesn't falter. "I'm sure you do too." She does not know him or who he is, but there is one thing she's certain of: he's looking for something here in Hoenn as much as she is.

It is human nature to seek—people, things, ideals. Castelia has everything she needs, but it's not enough. It doesn't have what she wants.

Erin does plan to go home, eventually. When the time is right. First Kanto, now Hoenn. How long would it take to get to Unova? There are no plans that she knows of for future invasions past Hoenn—if anything, the most strategic decision would be to secure Johto—but first she wants to prove to herself that change is possible. Not simply chaos, but change after the storm they'd be brewing.

Hoenn would be her personal experiment as much as Kanto had been Rocket's, though at the moment it seems Hoenn wants to play with them.

The clefable seems to almost float, taking big steps across the beach. That gives it such a carefree look that it's almost funny. "Cute." What catches her attention the most though is the water pokémon swimming in their direction, closing in at an incredibly high speed.

She can't see what it is as much as the trail of bubbles and foam it leaves in its wake. It doesn't matter what it is; the sight of a ruined wave bothers her, as does the thought of a ruined outing to the beach. A nod in her gengar's direction has him shooting a

shadow ball

and

dark pulse

in quick succession at the approaching figure.

Whatever it was, the beams would change the wild pokémon's course. "Don't want that one splashing water on us, do we?"

she is correct in her assessment: he has things he wants to do here in hoenn; no, there are things he has to do. hoenn will soon feel his wrath more than it already has.

his mind wanders to the past, imagining what it would have been like if he had chosen johto over hoenn. johto is easy: the border it shares with kanto will prove to be its downfall, more than it already has. rocket already has roots deep within johto and when the time comes it to will fall.

and so, for her reason, she has earned the slightest bit of his respect.

she makes quick work of the pokemon that approaches from the water, sending it in the opposite direction only to leave the clefable to him.

"no. no we don't."

without the slightest care, silas releases his metang and doesn't even turn to watch the battle. his eyes seem to be fixated out on the waves.

like gengar, metang makes quick work of the clefable. silas throws a pokeball at it.

there is something about the girl that is oddly interesting, so, he asks.

"what business do you have in hoenn?"

Odd, she didn't think he would be asking further about her motives. Give and take; it's the game they're playing at. If she gave in, common courtesy would dictate that he answer the question back in turn. Does Erin want to take that step? She doesn't have to think it for long. For all she knows, this would be the first and last time she saw the man.

"That's no question to ask on a first date. You haven't even given me a name to call you by, sir." The answer comes as a reflex. Her own type of defense mechanism, ingrained in her since a long time ago. She smiles playfully and lets a moment pass before she answers for real.

How could she express everything she is looking for in only a few words? "We could say I'm looking for proof. I want to show the world that this corrupt political system everyone's been so quick to embrace is no better than pure anarchy."

She eyes him carefully, waiting for a reaction. This is the most she'd told anyone about the motivations driving her and she's honestly unsure of how he'd react. Blame it on the sun; on the heat. Maybe even on the fact she's finally here, in Hoenn. She ties a ribbon around her words and takes the leap.

"I do hope you're not with the goody two-shoes. Wouldn't want to kill such pleasant company."

[break][break]

Even through the threat, she doesn't move. The man's metang may look physically persuasive, but it's no metagross. If it came down to it, she trusts her gengar to deal with it. Still, she'd have to keep an eye out for the rest of his team.

her answer is a defense mechanism so he chooses not to acknowledge it. her real answer comes after, and he listens with every bit of interest, absorbing each word with genuine curiosity interwoven with caution, because silas is not one to open up, but he knows the nature of the game they are playing.

"have you found it?"

proof is not hard to find in hoenn. she might not be aware of this, but it is through corruption that allowed silas to embed rocket deep within hoenn, in its very hierarchy responsible for upholding the stability of the region. look to the past council before it was reformed and she'd find at least half of them working for him.

"you wouldn't be able to either way."

her threat is recognized, valid, but he invalidates it instantly. the metang floats back over with the pokeball in its hands, dropping it on the sand in front of silas. picking it up, silas takes a moment to trace his fingers over the grooves of the sphere, feeling every bit of detail.

"silas."

A laugh, diverted yet somehow hollow. As maddeningly ironic as it may be, the crudeness in that simple truth is nothing to laugh about. "Yes, in a way, but not exactly. I'm looking for something grander, you know?" Something like finishing what they started in the region, for starters.

The name means nothing to her, so she takes it in as any other first meeting, as any other introduction. "Erin," she offers in return and doesn't ask for more.

Two possibilities come to mind: this Silas either thinks too poorly of her or feels too confident in himself, neither of which Erin appreciates one bit; but he doesn't seem to judge her reasons, and for that she decides he is no enemy.

Still, she's curious.

"What makes you think so?"

If her poise makes her seem delicate or—even worse—vulnerable, she wants to know it before she sets off into her new undercover life.

something grander. how precarious. her words resonates within him as the silence grants him moments to ponder, to assess, to size up this unknown entity that stands before him. this is a fresh encounter; it has been a while since he's had a genuine conversation.

erin: a name he will remember.

she further prods with a stick of intrigue, jabbing into where she suspects to be vulnerable. he shifts on the sand, pocketing the pokeball as he spares a glance back at her.

"your gengar was carrying a parasol."

a rare joke from the rocket boss, but nothing more than that. no chuckle, but perhaps just the slightest upturn of the corners of his lips.

"there's a lot you don't know. be careful while you learn, erin."

silas repeats her name with added flavor as he rises from the sand. his shadow stretches with his movements as he finds himself staring back at her.

"i'll help you find proof."

The mood lightens and finds Erin laughing again. Her question had been serious; the answer, she has to wonder. Still, it is a more than valid one, from which a lot about his perception of her could be derived if she wanted to read into it.

"You don't think parasols can be deadly?"

She could make more mundane things deadly—not in a James Bond or John Wick kind of way, but rather through a more calculated approach. Erin always had a knack for tweaking tech and creating programs to make her life and that of her clients easier. After everything she's been through, going the extra step to make taking lives easier would have been no harder.

Her name on his lips feels like as much a warning as an invitation, like she's playing with fire on a room doused with kerosene. It triggers a faint buzz at the back on her head, light but alerting.

Silas's next words are what really get her. "You will?" she asks with an amused tilt of her head, prompting him to go on. She can't begin to imagine how exactly he plans to do that, but Erin's willing to see this through to the end.

She doesn't stand up, not yet, but her feet have moved from reclining on her seat to resting the warm white sand. He's got her full attention. "Teach me, then."

if erin is perceptive enough, she'd be able to see the slightest hint of a grin appearing on his face. it lingers just for a few moments before fading, stoicism taking its usual place.

"keep your phone on you."

silas' words are mysterious and he doesn't bother to help her understand. he recalls his metang and steps past her, feet sinking into the sand with every step.

he stops by her.

"you might want to keep an eye on verdanturf."

and with that, he takes his leave.
