SLATEPORT GYM BATTLE

“EVADE AT ALL COST.”

the closer the battle comes to a conclusion the more fernando begins to get involved. he can see two possible outcomes, curious to see which one the trainer will pursue. it is these pinpoint, precise moments that battlers are put to the test. what determines winners and losers.

the monkey proves elusive. even outside of the jungle, the wild way it throws itself around boast the agility of a pokemon that has been refreshed. faint energy buzzed around it as it tries to escape the GYARADOS’ reach. the ICE FANG comes down, a decisive snap, but only lands on the pokemon’s arm.

it shrieks and screams, thrashing about, as it slips away, creating distance with every bound.

The monkey was fast. Speed was not the Gyarados’ strongest suit, as their most recent Silph Cup outing had proven. If only she could survey its movements, perhaps she could predict where it would land next. It was a stretch, but it was worth a shot.

“To your left, Whiskers!” Andrea shouted. With a guttural growl, the vermilion sea serpent dove to the left, going for a second Ice Fang.

THE ASSESSMENT IS CORRECT. andrea’s tracking is able to deduce the pokemon’s movement. however, the moment she makes the correction for her pokemon, fernando interferes once more.

“above!”

the scampering pokemon only has so many choices. already committing to several bounds in one direction, the sudden command forces the pokemon to improvise. a pair of vines lashes out at the ground, POWER WHIPPING the zarude in the opposite direction as the pokemon reels its hands back.

fernando’s eyes narrow as he tracks both pokemon. like andrea, he can guess their next movement and predict how his pokemon should react. yet, his hand reaches for the zarude’s pokeball.

The Gyarados retched, and growled in pain. The poison was starting to take its toll. The next move could very well determine the outcome of the battle.

“Hang in there, Whiskers! Just one more Ice Fang!” Andrea said encouragingly, at which point the Atrocious Pokémon lunged at the opponent one more time with jaws coated in ice.

IT WILL ONLY TAKE ONE MOVE TO DECIDE THIS BATTLE. but, that move never comes. before the ICE FANG can land, or the zarude evade, fernando returns his pokemon. just like his previous one.

“i’ve seen enough,” he declares. “you can return your gyarados. we’ll treat it for POISON.”

on the screen above, the outcome is labeled ‘BATTLE FINISHED’ with no clear distinction between a win or loss.

The abrupt ending to their battle surprised Andrea as well as her Gyarados, both of whom shared the same bewildered expression. “Does that mean it’s a tie?” The dragon-costumed girl asked in her confusion, reluctantly returning her Pokémon into its ball.

At Fernando’s offer to heal Whiskers of her poisoning, the girl nodded in gratitude. “That would be great! Thanks so much, Mr. Silph!” She said, handing over the ball.

Maybe he wasn’t such a bad guy after all. He looked like an upstanding Hoennian citizen as long as nobody put a certain Rocket lady within his line of sight.
