Stormy sucks in a breath as she watches what is about to go down.[break][break]

Flareon doesn't meet his target. He is instead intimidated into silence for a moment, glued to the ground. It's that one second of surprise and indecision that costs Ninetales. [break][break]

The Mightyena turns on the beautiful fox, using his attractive charms to distract her. The damage she delivered has already been done, but it wasn't enough to take Charlie out of the equation. Flareon cries out in warning, scrambling to his paws as he attempts to throw himself in front of the oncoming attack.[break][break]

He's too slow, however, and the laser-focused hidden power strikes Ninetales head-on.[break][break]

"No!"[break][break]

Ninetales makes the attempt to fight back, biting through the pain. She falters, however, her FLAMETHROWER missing the Mightyena right in front of her. But, perhaps it was intentional. Flareon absorbs the blast he's stepped in front of, and his fur seemed to fluff up. The lasting heat of Ninetale's DROUGHT further empowers him, and he turns on the already burning Charlie.[break][break]

"You can do this, Flareon."[break][break]

Just as Ninetales falls to the ground in a heap, unable to get back up, Flareon uses his QUICK ATTACK to close the gap between him and Charlie. His fangs are burning once again with a FIRE FANG as he attempts to take down his opponent. [break][break]

Stormy returns Ninetales not long after.[break][break]

can't relax just yet...

"parry."

delta is positioned in the ideal spot between the flareon and charlie. the burst of speed from quick attack usually leaves little to no time for proper turning, which almost always results to a straight path. delta makes use of the flareon's injury to predict its mobility.

a bark from the dark-type taunts the flareon's attention away from its original target even for but a moment. it conjures another barrier to protect itself from backlash as he acts as a wall between the two other pokemon on the field.

"...and dark pulse, delta."

should the other mightyena successfully buy enough time for charlie to recover from firing off its own move and turn around, a sinister energy would accumulate on its mouth, firing off a large burst of dark energy enough to swallow both the flareon and delta within its path.

delta's protect shield him from damage. the flareon, however...

Flareon doesn't falter, or at least his paws don't. Every step he takes brings him one step closer to taking down Charlie and avenging his fallen companion.[break][break]

Delta's taunt distracts him only for a second, but it alerts him to their plan. The beast in front of him acts as both a wall and a barrier, hunkering down and putting up a shield. [break][break]

But the fire-type is moving too quickly to stop now. Instead of stopping dead in his tracks as the two mongrels had probably assumed he would, Flareon jumps onto Delta's back, springing off of him just in time to dodge the dark pulse.[break][break]

The monstrous energy explodes against Delta's back, and Flareon is airborne while Stormy issues a command. [break][break]

"Flare blitz!"[break][break]

With a great intake of energy, Flareon opens its maw to release powerful flames. After absorbing the flamethrower from Ninetales earlier, the flames are even hotter. He forces the FLARE BLITZ down just as he falls from his leap. He's breathing heavily, however, his energy nearly spent. [break][break]

But he shifts his weight and bends his neck down to glare at the Mightyena in front of him, a low growl in his throat as he pushes himself on.[break][break]

the dark pulse was simply a precursor to what was going to happen next-- a smokescreen to catch the opponent off guard.

kyle crossed his arms as he barked out the next order. "delta, we're going offensive."

the mightyena turns around as soon as the flareon uses him as a jump pad, positioning himself to a more favorable spot as the fire-type turns its attention to somewhere else.

...which is to a mightyena preparing a hyper beam right as the dark pulse ended.

kyle did not expect the maneuver from the flareon, but having it midair was more favorable than not. it was easier to aim at, with nowhere to go besides the trajectory it pushed itself into. charlie doesn't charge the move in time however, firing off an uncompleted hyper beam at the flareon before the fire-type crashes onto him.

charlie drops on the ground soon after.

flare blitz has it drawbacks, most noticeably the recoil it brings to the user after performing the move. delta takes advantage of it as he races from behind the flareon's field of vision, attacking before it can recover from the move.

"crunch."

fangs would be aimed at the flareon's throat, aiming to grab the fire-type and slam it to the ground, attempting to asphyxiate it into unconsciousness in the process.

The hyper beam is a miscalculation, something that Flareon and Stormy had not been expecting. As the fire-type crashes down on top of the Mightyena, he is unfortunately met with the blast.[break][break]

It isn't at it's most powerful, however, leaving him room to still scrape by. In his weakened and exhausted state, and without his partner Pokemon to aid him, he is unfortunately defeated.[break][break]

Stormy realized then that even her own teamwork needed to improve, she wasn't as pleased with how this battle turned out than she might have been.

Flareon is asphyxiated into unconsciousness, falling victim to his own mistake. He would require more training, it seemed.[break][break]

"Are you sure you're not the gym leader, here?"[break][break]

Stormy says this as she approaches, wielding Flareon's pokeball. Her tone betrays the bruised ego she's facing, but the light in her eyes does suggest she's proud of her opponent. Had Fernando witnessed this battle, he almost certainly would have been disappointed in her.[break][break]

Perhaps that's why she was feeling disappointment, herself. [break][break]

"You battle well, Kyle, not that I ever doubted your strength. I'm honored to give you the Heat badge."[break][break]

he received the badge from stormy, staring at it for a while in his palm. the design was better than cait's badge at least, though he could argue he likes the colors of the lavaridge town badge better.

"i'd probably have a harder time if this was in a singles format," he argues back, trying to humble himself.

the mention of gym leader got him to tense up. he hasn't confronted alex about it since it was mentioned to him by the commissioner, but he hopes it wouldn't end to that.

"is it fun being a gym leader?" he suddenly asks her.

Stormy smirks a little bit at how humble he was trying to be. With a stretch to hopefully pull out any more of her stress or irritation from losing, she would ultimately relax a little bit.[break][break]

"It's safer to train in pairs or teams rather than alone. It's why I chose this format."[break][break]

She notices right away how tense he got the moment she mentioned gym leader. For a moment she feels the hair along the back of her neck stand up straight, a cold sweat falling over her. [break][break]

Had she said too much? Had she made it that obvious she knew about Alex's plans?[break][break]

Kyle's next question distracts her momentarily.[break][break]

"Yes, honestly. It's only as hard as you make it out to be. You have to stick around sometimes to train and to accept challengers - because that's the whole point of being a gym leader, but it's exhilarating. I learn a lot from the trainers I battle."[break][break]

he'll take stormy's word for it.

"well, if you're happy about it..."

he already told dahlia about his decision about being a gym leader. he doesn't want it for the responsibilities attached to the title. on the contrary, stormy seems to use them to better herself. perhaps he should follow the same mindset.

on the bright side, if he does get forced into it one way or another, at least he'll have stormy's account to validate the position.

"well, i better get going." he recalls both of his mightyena back to their balls. "i need to get them to the pokemon center. you should too."
