Against his family, mostly. It's a bit of a tenuous thing that comes and goes depending on poverty and desperation. Responsibility has always fit him like a ill-fitted tacky suit, like a little kid wearing his father's clothes. Ever since he was a boy, he's felt stuck between the silent war of two brothers, vying over the Hasegawa criminal empire. A frigid, vacant throne erected by a long history of violence and subterfuge.

He's never wanted any part of it, but there is no leaving the family. Well, there is... but it's a bit of a long story (thanks to his lovely cousin, Yumi Hasegawa ). He didn't even pave the rebellious path (though he claims otherwise), he simply rolled down the same hill and landed in a pile of shit at the bottom. It turns out freedom isn't all it's cracked up to be. It isn't easy to carve out an empire, but it's even harder to realize you're the king of nothing. You are a loser.

He's supposed to be the smart guy, the kid that knows-it-all with so little effort. The kid that gets what he wants when he snaps his fingers. The kid that's deathly afraid of being a failure, yet careens so close to the goddamn sun you'd think he's addicted to the burn of it. Instead, his father hands him a crown of shit and tells him to wear it, and he does. It's far more comfortable than the realization that he was born to fail. He was born to enjoy the stink of it.

Breaking free from "abuse" shouldn't be this hard. They tell him it's abuse, but he insists that he probably had it coming. He's always doing stupid shit, after all. Grovel a little, he'll forgive you. Poverty fits him about as well as responsibility had. It makes him wonder though if he was ever actually made for anything at all except temporary usefulness, a smart head without the sense to live by it. His father's branch of the family is petty, he is too, he supposes. So, he waits. He waits for his dad to call him and tell him he needs him. Anytime now.
