Fiddling with a console on his side of the battlefield, Navy sets the mood. All the lights in the gym dim. Alexei can still see, but not for very far unless he can produce a light source. Fog machines start to blow. The fog is artificial judging by the distinct smell of the fog machine. It’s chalky, but sweet at the same time, like old bubblegum gone to rot.[break][break]
“There’s only one problem with your setup. I dig your style, but you stick out like a sore thumb. Anyone can see you anywhere on a battlefield.” From somewhere down in the smokescreen, ice shards shoot out. They float in the air, making navigation through the artificial valleys, caves, and cairns of this area harder. Dragons are, after all, naturally weak to ice.

Funny how he was on the other side of the challenge now…

Easy, I’ve dealt with worse shit than this! he thought; though the artificial stench of the fog machine made his nostrils sting. Why did it smell like musty socks?! Gross!

“Fen,” he whispered so low only the bat-dragon could hear, “…time to show what we’re really capable of!”

(They’d flown in worse weather than this.)

Skimming as low as they could, a singular soft whistle made the Noivern halt on a dime in mid-air, before pulling something out of his pockets just in case he had to pop them in…

However it may not have been needed, because a galeforce Hurricane came from the Noivern’s wings; an attempt to dissipate the fog (and maybe scatter the icicles) before a second quiet whistle made the Noivern suddenly take a breakneck dive—they were still on the hunt for their missing team mate!

(He was more than certain Hera was going to be pissed when they got to battling later…)

Within his gym, a hurricane blows. Navy sits impassively in the eye of the hurricane, watching what transpires from on high. Hattori and Ellie go to ground, seeking shelter amidst the heavy rocks from the storm. So powerful is the wyvern’s bombastic gust that several rocks are uprooted. Hattori is visible for a second, but he disappears behind more rock. The frog stays low to the ground, running as only a creature being hunted can run.[break][break]
He's small, and here he can use his size to his advantage. He’s quicker than the big wyvern. Quieter. He outnumbers them…[break][break]
“Come on, Ellie. Don’t let up.” For a mere sneasel, Ellie is a spirited thing. When the wyvern swoops up, Ellie jumps out of the rocks to meet the charge. She turns her claws so their edges face up. She slices up in a feint attack. It looks far more fearsome than the blow will be, but she hopes the accumulated ice around her claws will make the Noivern think twice.[break][break]
“You’re doing good. Stay on the offensive. Play to your strengths. You’re second to none in the saddle.” He praises the challenger.

For a split-second, the Greninja’s visible, before disappearing back under the rocks. That was good!

(And he was sure that Hera was getting pissed inside the Dive Ball. His gut screamed at him because it was so.)

We’re on the right path, we just have to outspeed and corner— before his train of thought was interrupted by the Sneasel that had come leaping from the ground; and then he realized it was a surprise attack!

Even though he was rattled, the Noivern less so—being used to most antics back home in the air at Fortree. Without changing direction or bucking off his rider, the bat-draconid reared up before flapping his wings quickly and releasing an Air Slash at the Sneasel!

(Never mind of there were noises of disgust coming from the Noivern at the sight of the Sneasel’s frost-tipped claws.)

He then rubbed the back of the Noivern’s neck in a reassuring ‘good job’ gesture as he continued to squint ahead into the gloom, wondering if… how much of the place could he wreck? Not even the mightiest rock would stand up against a powerful wind, right?

Golden eyes gaze out at Alexei from the darkness. They look on impassively, having surveyed much of the battle as it has occurred thus far. Archivald’s instructions were simple: when you see an opportune moment, intervene. Were this a match that strictly adhered to the standard rules of battle, this would result in Navy’s loss.[break][break]
Rocket doesn’t care about structured matches or standard rules. Rocket only cares about victory. Rocket is ruthless, and they will not always do what you expect.[break][break]
These words are Navy’s rallying cry. He tells them to the young and the foolish old alike. He prays someone will listen.[break][break]
As Alexei searches, sending the Sneasel back down into the fog with a powerful clash, the eyes observe. It’s time to act. The eyes of the owl meet the Noivern’s eyes. They hold their gaze. They’re hypnotizing. Alexei’s strategy is powerful. From atop that mount, he rules the skies.[break][break]
…but what if that mount were to fall asleep mid-air? How would the Birdfather adapt?

Since Navy didn’t exactly give him any kind of word about collateral damage he presumed that all moves were a-go out here… despite being hilariously underground.

(It reminded him of this huge-ass training space seemingly hidden under a ‘general supply store’ in one of those graphic novels he’d consumed back then.)

A flicker of movement caught his eye and then suddenly—

“Wait, shit, where’d you come from?!” he yelped as he held on tight for ~~dear~~ deer fucking life as he felt Fenrir wobbling in mid-air, before a sudden, rather loud burst of energy shook the area…

Shit! he thought, quickly slipping in the earplugs as best as he could while his Noivern attempted to make as much noise as humanly possible with the extremely loud Boomburst attack—

He only had one ear plug on, so half the noise still meant he was gritting his teeth because shit, there was good reason why Thomas Benoit had advised him long, long ago to always carry a pair of earplugs when travelling with a Pokémon that could use this particular attack!

Boomburst certainly seems to solve most of Alexei’s immediate problems. His Noivern doesn’t fall asleep. The shockwave from the sound clears away some of the fog, revealing Hattori looking up at them, eye as wide as a dinner plate. Seeing that he’s been seen, the frog turns and runs. This time, he doesn’t make himself scarce. Rather, it’s a breakneck run through an obstacle course. Little heart thumping in his chest, he sends up an ice beam to try and keep the Noivern away.[break][break]
But the prize. Hera’s ball hangs at his side, strapped to him with a small belt. Alexei’s prize is his for the taking.[break][break]
Archivald doesn’t intend to just let them go. Instead, he flaps his wings. Though he might be damaged from the noise, he shouts back. His echoed voice bounces off the walls of the cavern, reverberating onto Alexei’s mount.[break][break]
“For what it’s worth, I’m pretty much deaf right now.” Navy says over the comms system.

The reverberating noise was literally—making him deaf in one ear.

Earplug, earplug, get that damned thing in! he would think to himself as he popped the second one in and—shit, it was still loud!

Fact of the matter was, though, that the Noivern had finally spotted the Greninja smirking up at him—and it was time to dive.

Well, dive as fast as humanly possible while avoiding the incoming Ice Beam that was meant for them!

The chill in the wind made him shiver, though; but what made this worse was the fact that there was another echoing noise—and while he couldn’t hear it, his Noivern could; and it made them stop for a few moments mid-air.

“Not now, Fen, not now!” he hissed through grit teeth as he flattened himself on the Noivern’s back, using Agility to catch up with the retreating Greninja.
