The dragonair coils in front of Slushie. Yipping, the Vaporeon barks out her thanks as she works to untangle herself from the roots and vines around her legs. Taking a few steps forward, she pushes her head against the dragon's back; a quick sign of friendship, a battle bond, before she pushes herself. Drawn low, she vibrates in place and pants softly in heavy, dripping breaths.[break][break]

Surging forwards, she takes the direct effect of the Disarming Voice, not wanting her new companion to face any fallout from the move.[break][break]

Her gelatinous form wavers and vibrates from the power of the fairy move.[break][break]

Shaking herself off after, Slushie staggers but holds herself upwards. She was powerful- but she was a glass canon at best. Too much and she would break.[break][break]

She wasn't down yet, though.[break][break]

Snapping her maw closed, her body ripped as a powerful blast of water shot from her mouth in a twisting tide, snaking together into one massive spout of water. A Hydro Pump, aimed at the confused Jam Jam.

aeris' spine arches alongside slushie's movements and after the vaporeon has stepped forward, pearlescent scales shimmer and then flake off all at once. her eyes open wide, drowsiness shrugged aside. her neat mouth opens in objection when slushie takes the brunt of the fae's attack.

with the two of them stuck on the defensive as they've been, mallow will have had time to recover from the worst of the ice beam. but aeris is no longer exhausted.

she uncoils, body twirling around her companion's hydro pump, veering away from jam jam at the last instant to veer towards mallow. her mouth is full of blue fire, the gems on her neck and tails burning much the same.

[attr="class","text"] Jam Jam, it seems, bites off more than he can chew. Despite the speed his little, clawed feet carry him with, his gait is still tilted and erratic— mind still scrambled. That electric blue tongue lolls in his exhaustion, focus attempting to aim a GUNK SHOT, before shifting away at the last moment toward Mallow. He shakes his puffed fur, bright stripes of raspberry and white standing on end as he attempts to fire off a QUICK GUARD, but it is too delayed. Actions too scattered in the indecision, the zigzagoon is hit by the blast of the HYDRO PUMP before he can finish the defensive maneuver.[break][break]

Legs folding, he flops down— thoroughly knocked out by the blow, and he’s recalled to his ball. “Just you and me now, Mallow,” he says, which earns him an affectionate coo from the altaria. Because he is as much a part of this as they are. If he can’t direct at the right moments, what use is he? It should never be about just sitting by and allowing them to do the heavy lifting.[break][break]

It is Mallow’s desire to please her trainer that compels her to endure. Unable to shy from the blast from the dragonair, she weathers the fiery blue breath as electricity continues to crackle through her porous bird bones. Nothing more than a testament to their bond— and also her dignified pride, of course. The altaria’s head lifts on her long, swaying neck serenely. The gesture soft and graceful before her delicate beak pries open, feathers ruffling like a swelling cloud before the bottom drops in a downpour. The shock of bright, bluish-purple energy volleys up from her throat, aimed back at the other dragon (dragon pulse.)[break][break]

Her presence seems to shrink after the foreboding display, winded as she is. Those carefully held tethers fraying at rapid pace.

Two on one is unfair. But everyone on all sides is tired. This will probably come to an end soon.[break][break]

Slushie pants, tail drooping. After that last burst of energy, she's too tired to do much else.[break][break]

Then Mallow launches her own final attack. Slushie leaps forward.[break][break]

Mid-air, she flicks her eyes back at Aeris one last time. A friendly yip, small fireworks one last Celebrate popping off her body.[break][break]

The Dragon Pulse slams into her. Slushie falls after blocking the move, the Vaporeon laying on her side in a heap.[break][break]

She vanishes in a curl of blue light, Tempest holding a Dive Ball close in hand.[break][break]

He glances over at freya morningstar, giving her a nod.[break][break]

Trusting her, and her pokemon, to finish this.

aeris flinches, but the blast of energy never makes it to her. what would have spelled a debilitating end for the dragon never comes to fruition and she does not hesitate when slushie falls for her.

another torrent of blue flames ignites in the back of her throat and she swirls over her downed friend, tail flicking over her flank.

freya's admiration for the still-standing creature shines in pale gold, even as she casts a knowing glance over to Tempest Quinn. aeris converges, flames spray, and freya exhales as the last minutes of the battle tick by.

[attr="class","text"] In an impressive display, the vaporeon leapt to take the fall for her dragon partner. The blast deflects away from Aeris as Slushie goes tumbling and then disappears in the glow of recall.[break][break]

But even this doesn't give Mallow much room to react. In fact, she is rendered unable to react at all. The paralysis lying mostly dormant in her nerves seizes up and locks her in place with a staticky crackle.[break][break]

The secondary blast of DRAGON BREATH makes full impact and the altaria wilts on the spot, feathered wings drooping along with her long, swaying neck. Rather than immediately return her, Lam approaches the unmoving mass of cloudy feathers and passes a praising hand across the downy softness. Unable to fight any longer, Mallow coos at the affection and falls unconscious.[break][break]

Then she disappears in a beam of light and Lam turns his attention back to the match winners.[break][break]

"That was amazing!" Lam's hands lift to clap a few times, "You're natural together! It all looked so effortless." It was the right sort of rapport - a natural understanding of one another's styles and methods. It was unfortunate, based on their earlier conversation, that they didn't seem to be in contact with one another.[break][break]

But that hadn't set either back in the least.[break][break]

He fishes out something from his pocket and held the set of matching badges out for the two challengers as he made his way back to the center of the pitch. "You've more than earned these. Totally nailed the spirit of the challenge."

Mallow falls.[break][break]

Tempest lets out a breath, some tension loosening in his shoulders. This had been tight at the end. @lam approaches with the spoils of war. Two shiny badges, one for each of them.[break][break]

He offers his own half smile to the other man, making his way over to accept the badge. He flips it over in his hand, admiring the make, before tucking it into his pocket.[break][break]

But, well, he needed to leave.[break][break]

Glancing over at freya morningstar, there was an almost apologetic look on his face.[break][break]

"It was nice to see you again." It's cruel in it's sincerity. A promise that can't be kept. Here, the coils of war will keep them apart. Here, friendliness can't exist between them.[break][break]

A nod is given to Lam, a quiet thanks given for the match and meeting, then Tempest is quick to turn and leave.

there's an apology on his face. her dragonair wavers, exhaustion gripping her sides, and freya is quick to recall her. she tucks her ball back onto her belt and smiles as lam approaches, though it's a forced one, stretched taut while temp chips away at the self-preserving blockage in her brain.

it will be some time before she unravels their memories in their entirety, and she'll curse herself for what's forgotten to her own ignorance. but she'll be pleased, too, because there will be less friendship to miss, as it can never exist again.

now, though, there are the warning signs of an oncoming nosebleed. her head aches. she turns away when he leaves and, out of sight, the world makes more sense. the pain goes away.

she takes her badge and regards lam.

"thank you. i think we knew each other once. myself and... davey." she shakes her head. "but moreover, it was a great battle. your altaria's incredible. i hope she'll forgive us for dirtying her down feathers."
