Working with this man again was an honour, manoeuvring had become a lot easier ever since he had gotten his Sableye, the world opened up in front of him with a phantom force, and Kouji was sure his pokemon was not the faster one.

”What’s the move underboss Quinn, we’ve got the tunnels here, but we’ll be stuck competing with the League, how about we make it harder by letting the dream mist waft to their side, you got any pokemon that are skilled in drilling?” He said as he looked at the walls, there was a serious risk towards themselves, but he considered it worthwhile.

”What do you think of that plan?” He said as he brought out Weavile and Druddigon, getting his pokemon ready to begin digging. He looked over at Cillian and then to the collecting Dream Mist.

Dream mist has always made Cillian uneasy, though his expression is as stoic and unwavering as ever when he steps from the PHANTOM FORCE portal of his own Pokémon. The Dhelmise colony has grown since Kouji would've seen it last, new loops of red seaweed curled protectively around the rusted anchor.[break][break]

Kouji is quick to suggest a route, and Cillian sees no reason to contest it.[break][break]

"I have plenty of Pokémon that can dig, but few who specialize among my fighters."[break][break]

His strategy was primarily an all-out-offense utilizing his shadows. Still, Kouji wouldn't be entirely without help. Dhelmise ALLY SWITCHES with a snarling Sandslash whose presence chills the air around them. Cillian whistles, drawing its attention, then clicks his tongue while signing something with his left hand. If, by chance, Kouji knew sign-language, he might recognize the order to dig.[break][break]

"Dig, Cailleach."[break][break]

Though it lacked the move that would greatly aid it, the METAL CLAWS of the shrew still made for excellent tools.[break][break]

"Careful around that mist," he advises, as the DREAM MIST closes in. "It has a habit of playing tricks on the mind."

Kouji did not know Sign Language, but seeing the pokemon go to use Metal Claws, he got the idea anyhow, it was a doable command.

He called another Pokemon up, Sandile to help out. ”He might be small, but he can dig well. You two, widen whatever he digs out, get out the sand.” He ordered more directly, the only signs he had were for battle; maybe he should have had other maneuvers ready.

”If anything attacks, get into S-D Maneuver.” Since they were already out, it was worthwhile to have them be the ones on defence. A simple maneuver, simple using one as the drawer of aggro, while the other setup.

Still, he didn’t like that mist.
[break][break]
”Keep going in that direction.” He told Sandile as it began to dig.
[break][break]
The mist began to roll in, but that was the thing with something like mist, it could really only be seen once it had begun to grow thicker.

”I’ll keep an eye on it.” He said but just as he had spoken of that, the world began to change slowly, and before Kouji knew it, the environment was entirely different but awfully familiar.

”Vermillion City huh?” He said as the city was on fire, the takeover of this place had been pretty brutal, men had fought to their dying breaths. He hadn’t gotten to take part, not truly. But he had seen it, witnessed it, and thrived on the fringes.

But the roar of a mechanical dragon overhead told him this was not that Vermillion.

In spite of their best attempts to avoid it, the DREAM MIST closes in from all sides. Sun-baked shores become pavement cracked from countless EARTHQUAKES, and the Vermillion docks stretch out over the water as they burn.[break][break]

Cillian can taste the smoke, feel the heat of the flames.[break][break]

Kanto held no memories he wished to relive, yet Cillian does not flinch from the bitter reflections as he once had. This was a part of Rocket's history, his history. Kanto had been a victory.[break][break]

He had not betrayed Rocket, even in his most desperate moments, because of days like this.[break][break]

This is what happens to those who rebel.

A dragon's roar cuts through the crackle of flame and the cries of desperate citizens, and Cillian shields his eyes from the blaze as he looks up toward it. A sharp whistle signals his Sandslash, who leaps from its burrow to PROTECT the Rocket duo from the HYPER BEAM that sears toward them.

It was a well-timed protect, he was sure his pokemon were still digging, but it seemed that his sandile was quick to the rescue, the issue with some pokemon is that they were too gung-ho. It was especially obvious in the case of the young, human or pokemon, rushing into the fight. It snuck around from underneath the ground and popped up at the Iron Jugulis.

Only to end up in the maw of an Iron Thorns, mechanical teeth sinking into it.
[break][break]
A part of his mind had latched onto the fact he once had a similar plan, but it had only worked out thanks to the man next to him, but it wasn’t so simple this time around.

”You idiot. Route RS.” Rescue, Weavile was the first to move, being one of his fastest pokemon, dashing between rooftops, spinning at a high speed before the maws of this monster could finish the job, an ice spinner.
[break][break]
Druddigon stood by Kouji’s side.
[break][break]
”I can’t tell whether this is better or worse than the actual day.” He said with a wry smile, but he shrugged it off. If his Sandile couldn’t survive, it was simply too weak, and if they couldn’t the same was true.

Just like it had been for the people who had lived in this city.
[break][break]
”Only way out is fighting, Druddigon. Path Bb.” His pokemon roared an assent before he ascended.
[break][break]
But Kouji’s eyes were instead on the landscape. ”We should move sir, these guys might be playing out the role of Rocket, which means the docks aren’t safe.”

Cillian's instincts are to fight. Just as he'd done so many times in Rocket's name, as Rocket's fires blaze around him, the now-underboss takes an offensive approach. Light from those fires fragments off the crystals of a TERA ORB in his palm, its sapphire hues washing over the Sandslash in a sudden tide.[break][break]

The FIERY FANGS of the Iron Thorns find no malleable steel or melting ice, colliding instead with damp crystal.[break][break]

The WATER-TYPE shrew levels a TERA BLAST at the Iron Thorns, snarling challenge. But at Kouji's suggestion, Cillian reconsiders his approach. They could hold their own against these beasts for now, but what use to have a weakened team when going against the League.[break][break]

A sharp whistle precedes another signal. Retreat.[break][break]

This one, the Sandslash seems to already understand. Following its attack, it gives chase as the Rockets turn tail. Cillian's MIASMA speeds his steps, as well as the shrew's own, but the underboss deliberately keeps pace with his ally.[break][break]

"Worse," he says drily. "In Kanto, we were the ones to send them running."

”Innocents sure are easier to fight.” It was a natural set of words that came out of his mouth as a reply to Cillian’s statement, but rather than dryness; it was tinged in amusement. ”Less fun though, can’t get into a real brawl with them.”

Kouji could move just fine, even with the Roaring Moon up ahead, the map was perfectly set in his mind, he knew this dock well, and the roads that led through it; so he simply moved. ”There’s a little overhang around the corner.”
[break][break]
It had been years, but he remembered it, the dozen steps of his childhood, were a few strides in his current years. TIme really was cruel, but in a way these had been some of his fondest years, forged him into his present self.
[break][break]
But it was still hell.
[break][break]
”Iron Thorns is a problem, but if we don’t get rid of Iron Jugulis, we’ll be stuck.” He said as he saw Weavile dash past, it was running interference. He didn’t need to give it more instructions, the pokemon knew what to do, it was Druddigon, a newcomer that was more concerning.

The less said about Sandile the better, it was simply too weak to make it.

They differ, here. Where Kouji finds some delight in the memories of innocents crushed, Cillian sees only the harsh realities of war. He did not wish for innocent lives to be lost in their conquest; had he his way, the underboss would see a peaceful surrender. Since Kanto, he has learned to spare those who step aside. Mercy, small as it was.[break][break]

But, unlike previous times with softer souls, people like Rowan Wrynn and Isaac Merlo and Eris Halla, he does not express that sentiment. When it brushes softly against the frayed edges of his mind, he hardens his heart.[break][break]

Ironic that those he'd once shown his gentler heart had been the one to break it, to forge its shape anew.[break][break]

Kouji Matsubara is trusted to lead in this space so familiar to him, and Cillian doesn't hesitate to follow. No thoughts are spared for the fallen Sandile, and indeed Cillian pulls a pokeball from a bag slung over his shoulder.[break][break]

Not one of his precious shadows, nor a treasured teammate.[break][break]

A spare.[break][break]

The Miltank, one of many collected to experiment upon in hopes of better understanding its shadowed cousin, takes the brunt of another HYPER BEAM without the shield of the Sandslash's protection. There is not blood and gore, only ash that dissipates into the wind.[break][break]

Cillian doesn't so much as look back at it.[break][break]

Sandslash levies a BLIZZARD, its FROSTBITE slowing those in pursuit as it creeps along limbs.

It was cold, but it only increased his assessment of Cillian as a leader, Kouji wondered if other grunts were seen in the same way of the Miltank. No, not just other Grunts, it’d make sense if he fell in that same lens.

Only the strong had the right to survive, Kouji didn’t consider himself to be an exception to that rule, he just had to leverage it differently now, what they needed was a plan. It wasn’t as if his boss couldn’t do it on his own.
[break][break]
But if he was just going to be dead weight, it was better to walk into that hyper beam too.
[break][break]
”Route IHR.” He said aloud, loud enough for Weavile to hear, the pokemon nodded. The slowed down enemies wouldn’t be able to attack just as quickly, and so Weavile began to sharpen his claws, the blades turned sharper and sharper, it’s attention narrowed, his focus increased. Druddigon followed along, tracing the same movement, the same move.

”Looks like he’s learning. Let’s lead them away from the water, any mix of a hurricane and electric move near the coast will just lead to us being electrocuted. North-East.”
[break][break]
He just needed to think a little bit more, linear moves weren’t good, and there were definitely other monsters hiding in the town. On the run, unsure of who was an ally or an enemy, danger at every corner, one mistake meant death.

It was terrifying, but it was that kind of fear that made him move.
[break][break]
His feet took him north-east, small alleys he used to move goods, to avoid sight, this was the dock town he had smuggled to more than any other. It was that same exhilaration, but he was no longer a child. He no longer had the qualms that he had back in those days, especially not a for a dream.
[break][break]
”Take down the buildings, make it as difficult for them to follow us as possible.” Weavile and Druddigon split off from him again, the pokemon moved forward with the dragon type smashing straight into the first building he could collide with.

The dream of fire and smoke was now filled with screams.

Cillian offers a curt nod, immediately accepting the suggestion.[break][break]

"This is your stomping ground," he acknowledges. "You lead for now."[break][break]

Though hierarchy was important in Rocket, Cillian found it equally important to know when to rely upon your subordinates. To insist upon doing things his way in a place like this could get them both killed.[break][break]

Kouji might think that he and other grunts are expendable to Cillian, but the opposite is true. Rocket is his family, and their protection trumps his pride.[break][break]

Like Kouji, the adrenaline that surges through him during their deadly chase spurs him onward. Rather than fear, however, Cillian feels exhilaration. He has chased this feeling since youth, but Lugia's corruption and the toxin that curses him in turn has only amplified his love of danger. He fears death, and yet that fear is what makes him feel the most alive.[break][break]

Perhaps Kouji might glimpse that glee as they pause in an alley's shadow.[break][break]

"Again!" Cillian commands Sandslash, using words so as to be heard over the crumbling of stone and the phantom screams of memory.[break][break]

Another BLIZZARD covers their retreat.

With so many blizzards, the Iron Thorns was struggling as much as the Iron Jugulis, the two of them weren’t fit to be hit by so many of those moves; but a cornered animal, even mechanical, was something to be wary of.

Druddigon was the first to realise it.
[break][break]
The cloud of dust from a toppled building parted, a swirling beam of draconic energy struck it head on, shooting it backwards; its back being torn up by the ground it skidded against, and its front being drilled into by the strong beam, Kouji had no choice but to recall it. It was too early for this one yet.
[break][break]
But…They had time, and so he would wait, Weavile was weaving, cutting between buildings before meeting back up with them, as if waiting on Kouji’s response. They were pretty close now, large trees loomed around them overhead, they were in the forest, and that was fine; darkness would conceal them.
[break][break]
”We’re here, there’s a clearing up ahead, but how about we go for a bit of harassment first? Wouldn’t that be fun, sir?” He could hear the pulse in his ears, being in this place made him feel like a child again, but this time.
[break][break]
He wasn’t a cowardly crybaby.
[break][break]
”You’re up Tyranitar, Absol. Block R.” He gave his pokemon the all clear before he recalled Weavile for his Tyranitar and Absol; a Sandstorm kicked up which quickly connected into a series of growing rocks that were thrown forward in a wave, not at their enemies, but laying out a path.

Kouji calls for an indulgence, and Cillian shakes his head.[break][break]

"Dealing with these things isn't our mission."[break][break]

Though the sweet rush of adrenaline courses through his veins, Cillian is able to drown out its siren song and focus on their original mission. Minutes ago, before they'd been driven back by the Paradox duo, they'd had a different goal in mind.[break][break]

"We need to divert the Mist, and these Pokémon, away from our side."[break][break]

Digging had proved too slow, and so Cillian switches his Sandslash for another Pokémon: a shadow-touched Braviary with none of the aggression possessed by his others. It sees not enough use to know his system of clicks and whistles, so he calls to it instead: "Tailwind, away from us!"[break][break]

The winds begin to howl around them, responding to Braviary's beating wings.

The order sees his Sandslash set up a swirling HAILSTORM; for the Jugulis to draw closer to them would be a death sentence, especially as the FROSTBITE from Cillian's shadow Sandslash creeps along its metal limbs.[break][break]

All ICE TYPE attacks have a chance to freeze the target. Attacks that have an innate chance to freeze the target will now inflict FROSTBITE if they do not freeze. Frostbite SLOWS affected pokemon. Kouji looked over his shoulder and nodded, stalling? That was something he could do with ease, it was time to kick this up to maximum gear then, the terastal crystal that he held in his hand began to glow brighter and brighter, empowering Tyranitar, turning it into the Dragon Type.

It was a shift that the now dragon type needed to keep up in this fight, and it charged forward with now enhanced speed, setting forward a screech, heavily lowering the Iron Jugulis’ defence, the ice was able to spread at even greater speed now, while Absol avoided by using a detect which naturally lead into a sucker punch towards Iron Thorns.

It was a balance, stalling, you didn’t have to win, you didn’t have to stick your neck out, all you had to do was engage, he had thought he knew it before, but he only really began to understand it during his fight against Greyson.
