Riley couldn't get enough of Petalburg Woods.[break][break]

Yeah yeah, he supposed it was a bit stereotypical: "kid from arid hellhole enjoys plants and shit" wasn't exactly a new phenomenon, but still. He couldn't really get enough of Hoenn's flora, and though he wasn't a landscape photographer primarily, he had sworn to capture as much of it as he could. That wasn't why he was here today, though. No, truthfully, he was here for a single reason: to try catching some pokémon on his own.[break][break]

While he'd caught a few incidentally, he'd really only gave it a fair shot on that day with Momo. And truthfully, he'd found the activity pretty fun. Though he doubted that he was destined to be a "gym trainer" or anything dumb like that, he definitely could see himself doing some more proper trainer stuff. Especially after meeting Gunner and his crazy dragon-types. On that note, the agent had a good idea: given the state of things in Hoenn, having more protection for himself was probably a good call. He certainly wasn't going to go to the police if something happened.[break][break]

"Alright, girl," said Riley, once they were deep into the woods. "Keep your eyes peeled." Speaking of dragons, he'd decided to bring Laika, his flygon, with him today. Not only had she made the trip from Slateport much easier, but she probably needed the opportunity to get out and stretch her wings. While Riley had been fortunate enough to capture the rare dragon type, his university lifestyle didn't exactly promote the exercise required for a majestic dragon like her.[break][break]

Laika affixed him with a blank, uninterested stare, then looked away entirely. It almost felt pointed. Riley sighed, before kneeling down and pulling the small set of pokémon incense he'd picked up from the market. "Let's see if this works," he muttered, before lighting it and stepping away. Now, they waited to see if any pokémon would show.

He looked like an idiot.[break][break]

Having set up the incense and stepped away, Riley now crouched in the bushes, watching and waiting for something to approach. Laika had lumbered up behind him, settling down on her haunches and still clearly within eyesight of the clearing. Real sneaky, overall. Definitely not giving away his hiding position. Was this what trainers did all day? He thought being a trainer was supposed to be fun. All this made him was annoyed and exhausted.[break][break]

Finally, after what felt like ages, the sound of wiggling came from the clearing. Peeking up over his bush, Riley watched as a small red-and-white creature hopped its way into the clearing, looking around. A foongus? Ugh, just his luck. He didn't have anything against the species necessarily, but it just wasn't what he was looking for. And now it was about to disrupt the trap! For a moment, his mind raced, as he tried to decide what to do.[break][break]

Behind him, Laika sat up a little straighter, before letting out a large roar over his head. Riley winced, jaw clenching. The foongus let out a squeak, before fleeing into the bushes again. It, and probably half of the forest. Riley sighed, but gave Laika a nod in thanks. She stared down at him with those thoroughly uninterested eyes. Truly inscrutable.[break][break]

Oh well. Laika might have scared away ever cool pokémon in the forest, but at least the incense was undisturbed.

Okay, so take two was... also not great.[break][break]

This time, another small pokémon emerged from the bushes, one that took Riley a moment to recognize. It was a gossifleur, native to Galar, right? He hadn't seen one up close before—grass types were already rare enough in Orre, let alone delicate flowers like that. He had to admit, the thing was kinda cute... but this had been expensive equipment, and he wasn't willing to risk wasting it for a pokémon that likely wouldn't see much use.[break][break]

"Laika?" He whispered. "If you wouldn't mind?"

The dragon-type let out a big, silent yawn, before affixing him with those dead, uncaring eyes. He sighed, before placing his hands together in a pleading gesture. This seemed to appease the flygon, and she stood up from her position on the ground. Funnily enough, it wasn't even necessary. The moment the gossifleur heard the sound of bushes rustling, it was out of there, disappearing in a flurry of flower petals.[break][break]

Riley sighed, lowering himself back down. Please, please let this be the end?

Finally! Something interesting![break][break]

Riley had nearly given up hope when a small, hedgehog-like pokémon wandered into the clearing, sniffing at the incense. A chespin! As far as Riley knew, those were quite rare. At this point, he'd take it—he couldn't bear to sit in these bushes any longer, praying for something more interesting than a shrub to wander out into view.[break][break]

Sneaking forward, Riley prepped a pokéball, waiting for the perfect moment. The chespin looked around, sniffing suspiciously at the incense. Then it poked it once, then twice. Now! Stepping forward, Riley approached and tossed the pokéball. The chespin could only let out a squeak of surprise before it disappeared into a blink of light.[break][break]

Riley sighed, approaching the captured pokémon. At least that was over with.
