A RUINED CITY IN ULTRA SPACE. It is unclear whether this is a different universe's Ultra Megalopolis or smaller colony. Regardless, it is a dark city with intermittent sections of flickering, artificial light... Large, black prism-like skyscrapers loom above flat black streets. Much ruin has fallen here, but you get the sense that you're not alone...

It felt like an eternity since he had seen sunlight, even if it was only minutes. He couldn't remember why he decided to enter the portal in the first place. Already, the darkness of the void was taking its toll and affecting his psyche. Something felt wrong. Out of place. Roy perceived a disturbance of some kind, but one that wasn't new. It was an eerie feeling. It felt like decay.

Without a pokemon at his command, the trainer navigated the outskirts of the crystalline city by hand. They didn't deserve to pay for his mistake, or at least not yet. Roy mostly used his phone to guide his path, but this tool had an expiration date in the form of a battery. Even with the glow of the screen at hand, the world remained dim. He would use his free hand to steer, placing it on the various different objects on the sides of his path. With each press of the hand, he'd move a few more steps forward and make a note of the structure's glass-like texture underneath his fingertips. He would go on like this until something changed and something did.

Silence, but not the normal kind. He stopped to make note of it because it was different. Something was off. Was something watching him? He started moving again, but faster this time. It felt as if something was following him. Then he stopped using his hand to steer. Now it was in his pocket, grasping at the ancient sphere that contained his charizard. Roy was ready to defend himself, if necessary.

Darkness[break][break]

All around him was the ever encroaching dread the lack of light came with. How did he end up in such an area? One moment he was walking along a path on the way to the next city and the next, he's whisked away to some foreign, unknown land. Towering above him, lights that occasionally came into view from what looked like buildings, yet here on the ground level there was no such aid. With the help of his trusted Braixen at his side, the fox-like Pokemon lights its wand with a quick breath of fire, serving as a makeshift torch and brightening up their immediate surroundings.[break][break]

Not much was shown, however, the only things they could make out were the road beneath their feet and and a glassy surface on a nearby structure. Were they in some sort of city? It was too hard to tell. Where were its inhabitants and why was it so dark? He may never get the answers to these questions as suddenly from up ahead, a shadowy figure looms in the distance. He and his Braixen ready themselves for battle as there was no telling whether or not they would be friend or foe.[break][break]

"Hey! Who's out there? Show yourself or else we'll be forced to attack."[break][break]

How terrifying. He was running for his life from something that may not even exist. Only doom and gloom existed in this world and Roy didn't expect any kind of savior but fate had other plans. Blazoned like an emblem of fire amid the sheer darkness, the ranger's voice gave warmth to the two unexplained silhouettes in front of him. Roy wasn't alone, but he wasn't necessarily safe either.

"Save it for whatever lives down here." The trainer closed the distance between the two. Noel was human enough to pass the test, but the bar was certainly low. "Do you know how to get out of here?" Before he could get an answer, Roy felt the presence again. Something or someone was here. Watching. Waiting. Ready to attack.

Pressing a single finger to his own lips, Roy's presented a gesture for the ranger to see. They needed to be quiet.

Noel opens his mouth as if to speak but is immediately hushed by the stranger. Slightly annoyed by the rude gesture, he keeps quiet for the time being as something starts to come into view. Another figure approaching from the gloomy dark, but this one was different. Its movements were erratic, the sounds of its step shuffling as if walking was a struggle. And when it finally stepped into the light, its features were bare for all to see. It was unlike anything he had ever seen with blue skin and a body distorted by god knows what.[break][break]

"What... is that? Hey are you ok?", Noel asks, breaking the silence only for his question to be answered by a guttural growl from the mysterious creature.[break][break]

Then suddenly, it attacks, its hands protruding outward, clawing at the air as it steps slowly forward toward the pair, its teeth gnawing at nothing. The blue-haired man is bewildered at the sight, it was as if a monster appeared straight out of a movie, only this one was real. Noel takes a step back along with his Braixen, the two unsure of whether they should attack or not.[break][break]

Was this guy some kind of superhero? The trainer thought himself too trusting, but this ranger was on a whole other level. It appeared that only Roy was capable of separating man from monster. Even from a distance, the creature was clearly a threat, but the trainer played along with the ranger's charade. If things were to go south, Noel would be the first casualty. This would give Roy the opportunity to react and even escape.

Then the creature lashed out.

Without delay, Roy drew the ball from his pocket. "Balm-" He was suddenly interrupted. Instead of his charizard, the trainer found his unruly canine placed before him. She reacted without her trainer's command, closing the distance between her and the monster. In one swift maneuver, the Lucario unleashed a single Force Palm into the creature's trunk before the ranger could finish his conversation. But it was too late. The monster's guttural growl had summoned others. Distant sounds of taps and hums could be heard but they were too far to be seen.

Just then, a horde of the very same creatures appear from seemingly out of nowhere into the light. Their ghastly, dreadful appearance causing the young trainer to freeze in fear for a moment. Noel gives an affirming nod to the stranger, he didn't fully trust him yet but he didn't have much of an option right at this moment. With his Braixen in tow, the two of them retreat away from the horde after summoning the courage to finally go. However, no matter which direction they went, they came face to face with even more hostile forces. [break][break]

Frantically searching for a way out, it seemed as if all hope was lost, until by the corner of his eye, Noel spies an abandoned-looking building just up the road ahead. He shouts out to his human companion who hopefully followed suit.[break][break]

"Hey! I see someplace that might be safe just straight up the path. I think its our only safe bet to get away from whatever these things are."

Despite her aura of defiance, the Lucario followed her master's initial orders to run. The two trailed the other pair as they scoped the scenery for any kind of escape. Every corner they discovered carried another pack of ruthless monsters to stack on top of the total count. They were quickly running out time, but Roy believed his Lucario might be able to buy some.

"Find us a way out of here." He knew that wasn't possible, but he said it anyways. It was obvious that she was doing everything in her power to hold back the urge to fight. She just needed permission and Roy delivered it. Without any reluctance, the feral canine relieved her position in the group and made her way towards the horde behind them. Too busy to look back, Roy could only imagine pictures to go along with the sounds of her attacks. She wasn't enough to stop the horde, but she did leave a mark.

The rest of the pack found their way out. There wasn't enough time to vet the ranger's decision, so Roy just followed his lead. Outside, his Lucario continued as a distraction.

Running like his life depended on it, the trainer and his Braixen step inside the building and turn around, holding onto the door and getting ready to slam it shut once the others arrived. After some time Roy steps through along with his Lucario not far behind, as soon as the Pokemon steps through, he quickly closes the door, pressing his body up against it as a few of the mysterious creatures crash into the door to try and get in. He quickly fumbles around for some sort of lock and finally stumbles upon it, stepping away as all seemed safe for now.[break][break]

In order to make sure they wouldn't go through, his Braixen sets up a Light Screen around the entrance, almost invisible to a human eye, it would take some time for the zombified Megalopolans to get through.[break][break]

"Phew... That was a close call, we'd best find another way out of here before they get in. That barrier won't last too long."[break][break]

Taking a moment to take in his surroundings, it seemed they ended up in some sort of library. Books were scattered all throughout with paper littered all across the floor. It looked as if whoever was here made a huge mess of the place. Noel would walk past row after row of shelves with some books still organized in their spots. None of the titles made any sense to him, he wasn't much of a bookworm anyway. After touring the ground level, he comes across some stairs, with seemingly no other way to go, he shouts to the stranger in order to get his attention.[break][break]

"Hey! Looks like I found a way up, it's probably best we stick together for now. Who knows what's up ahead."

She wasn't done yet. The Lucario wanted more. She showed her fangs and growled. This barrier wouldn't stop her, but Roy could. A well-placed hand on her shoulder relieved her from her duty. "That's enough." In a sudden burst of light, the canine was returned to her ball-like enclosure.

In this time, the ranger had managed to explore a bit of the location. They were clearly in a library, but there was no telling what kind of information it housed. Many of the books were strewn across the floor. One in particular piqued the trainer's interest. It had a plain cover with an etching along the binding that resembled glass. He took a few steps towards it and removed it from the floor. Before he had a chance to skim its contents, the ranger revealed his plan.

"I'm right behind you." Roy slammed the tome shut with a single hand and made his way towards the stairs.

Up and up they went in what seemed like an endless staircase. After what felt like an eternity, the blue-haired trainer begins to pant slightly, showing fatigue. Struggling to take the last few steps, they reach upon one last floor, an open doorway with its frame seemingly broken by someone or something. Noel lets out a tired sigh as he steps out onto the building's rooftop, bending over slightly and placing his hands on his knees, trying to regain his energy back.[break][break]

"Who's idea was it to have so many stairs for one building... We've best find a way out of here before those things get to us."[break][break]

Moving over to the edges of the topside, no railing served as a guard between him and a long fall surely to his death. The area was dimly lit by an overhanging light coming from another building up ahead. As he surveys for a way out, he stumbles upon a plank of wood that seemingly connected to the previously mentioned structure. However, upon further analysis, the walkway appeared shady at best, yet they weren't left with much of a choice.[break][break]

"Hey there, sorry I never got to introduce myself. I'm Noel, I wish we could have met under different circumstances but here we are. Looks like this way is the only one out... or at least I hope it would lead out. What do you say?"[break][break]

As an extension of his overall attitude, Roy wasn't one for small talk. He found it annoying, even if knew the ranger meant well. Instead of contributing to the conversation, he kept to his thoughts during the ride up the stairs. His attention was placed in this new book he retrieved from the first floor. While the glass-gilded pages appeared to be the most interesting aspect of the book, it was actually the cover that pulled the trainer's curiosity in particular.

Once the group reached the top of the structure, the trainer shifted his attention to the scenery. Unfortunately, there wasn't much to work with.

"I'm Roy." The ranger caught him during his examination of the area.

"I say we don't have much of a choice." He releases one hand from the book to let it dangle from another near his hip. Against the silence, subtle screeches and growls could be heard from their previous exit. They needed to move quickly, but the trainer would allow the ranger to lead the path.

With a nod to his partner, he starts his way across the walkway. Placing one foot after the other slowly and carefully. He takes a glance downwards and sees just how far high up he was. Gulping down whatever saliva was in his mouth, he continues his trek to the other side, having a few close calls along the way but ultimately ending up safely into the next building. Landing into what seemed like another staircase, the only options to continue on were either upwards or downwards. But first Noel would have to make sure that Roy followed him safely behind.[break][break]

"All right! You can come across now, don't worry I'll be sure to keep this thing steady."[break][break]

Placing his hands onto the end of the plank in order to secure its balance, he'd hold tightly onto it in order to make sure no accidents happen. If anything were to happen to Roy here, his consciousness wouldn't allow it to ever go. If anything, he'd make sure the two of them would get out of this alive, safe and sound or die trying.

To Roy, this guy was way too good to be true. Way too heroic. Patient too. There were benefits to this heroism, especially the willingness to go first, but it was also annoying in a way. The trainer had a willingness to help, but not like this. It seemed fake or unreal.

After the ranger made it across, the tamer followed. Unlike his comrade before him, Roy was a lot less timid. With one arm wrapped around his book and the other in his pocket, the trainer gently stepped across the makeshift bridge. He could hear the small fibers of wood snap beneath every step. Instead of being encouraged to run, his pace remained dull, that is until he reached the last few feet of the bridge.

The creatures from below had finally reached the top. Like a living organism, the monsters climbed over each other like insects to reach their objective. They were fast because they were hungry. Their combined weight on the end of the plank caused it to suddenly collapse. As the bridge fell into pieces below, the trainer used his toes to climb the debris in any which way he could. In one last attempt for survival, he tossed only a single open palm towards the hero that was initially waiting for him.

Noel lunges forwards towards the edge of the building, where once the plank stood was now just an endless-looking drop to who knows where. Reaching his hand out, he's able to just barely grab hold of Roy's arm just in the nick of time.[break][break]

"Don't worry I've got you!"[break][break]

Half of his body is left hanging as he attempts to pull the trainer up from the air. Grabbing hold with both hands, he slowly but surely lifts Roy to safety, panting softly from the exhaustion and rush as he sits on the cold floor. Yet there was no time for rest, soon thereafter, multiple of the zombified creatures jump their way towards the pair. Almost all of them falling down into the abyss however one could easily make its way across and cause all sorts of trouble.[break][break]

Rising back to his feet with his Braixen by his side, the fox-like Pokemon waves its wand towards the horde and begins to unleash a Flamethrower that would burn away their foes across the way. Their flesh melted under the intense ray, the sight was enough to unnerve Noel and he looks away from the mess. Once fully cleared, all the remained were the singed bodies with a disgustingly foul smell.[break][break]

Now that the danger was over for now, Noel calms himself down and stands near the stairs leading downwards, he didn't know where they would lead but anywhere was better than here for the moment. Turning to his companion, he would give off a nod before staring back down the stairs.[break][break]

"I think its best we go back to the street level, who knows what lies in this building plus we could use the cover from the alleyways. There must be some way out of this whole world."
