the beauty of not being a high ranking official of rocket is that people often get ignored if they're simply grunts. his face wasn't plastered everyone, but there's irony with the fact that only the highest on the ladder recognizes his name, but not the common folk.

blue vega.

that's the name he registered himself with for navy's gym. coincidentally, a color's name has also been a pet name of his during his stay in rocket, not unlike navy's own.

when the gym leader comes out to face his challenger, priam just waves his hand at him.

"well, y'know how it is. it got busy after the ultra sea stuff, and then there was the galar stuff, and then some other stuff afterwards. i tried camping out on your gym during the resurfaced island stuff too, but you weren't here!"

it sounded like complaints, but it was just priam trying to be loud for the sake of being loud.

"i felt bad leaving an empty promise behind so i got my busy schedule out of the way and made some time to visit since i did promise a match. we can call it quits now after you invited me to your office at slateport and i found it empty."

League doctrine dictates he should make every effort to arrest this man upon recognizing him. What the League doesn’t know won’t hurt them. A good fight is a good fight. Navy’s heard about this guy through the rumor mill. His face isn’t on any wanted posters or listed in any databases, but people notice if a person matching a certain description keeps showing up at big events.[break][break]
He wants to see what the guy’s got. He got a taste in granite cave, but that was before the sheriff truly found himself. Good fights are hard to come by. If anyone in the League asks, Blue is a perfectly nice gentleman who doubtless performed admirably in the challenge.[break][break]
“Sounds like we just keep missing each other.” A development that leaves the sheriff sad. “Thanks for finally making it. I was wondering who ran through my fridge while I was busy getting killed up north.” The dread of the grave he feels isn’t for this man. Not here, not now. It would spoil the mood.[break][break]
“I’m always around. Just do me a favor when we’re done here. Tell your grunt buddies to stop trying to use me to make a name for themselves. I don’t like killing, and it’s annoying to do the scared straight routine every other week.” Cracking his neck, he motions Priam inside. Navy takes his place. You know the drill.[break][break]
“So, just one Pokemon, huh? And a Gabite at that?”

"well, that's your fault for takin' the job!" priam points out. "but that just means i'll get a little extra now that we have our rematch!"

he releases his gabite from its ball.

"what do you mean? a gabite's more practical! they do everythin' ya can ask a garchomp for, and they're easier to feed, and i have a friend who buys any scales that get chipped off from battle for traditional medicine!"

elijah gardner better thank him for that when almost every trainer evolves their gabite at the first chance they get.

priam takes his place in the field, with his gabite taking front. he fills the silence with chatter, if there had been any point in time that n words came between the two of them.

"and come on! ya think i came all the way here just to deliberately throw? your gym haven't seen any challengers win with unevolved 'mons yet?"

“Nah. Guess that’s the consequence of the region being at war. Everyone pushes their Pokemon to evolve too early.” It had happened with his Tyranitar. Junior was once a rambunctious little Larvitar. Now, he’s a rambunctious little Larvitar in a Tyranitar’s body, occasionally beset by the killing instincts of a fully grown primordial monster.[break][break]
“Got some Pokemon that’re meant to deal with ‘em, too. Here, lemme show you.” Pulling out one of his own pokeballs, he throws out his Cyclizar. Thin Lizzy isn’t some grand, jaw-dropping beast like Vortigern, Grendel, or Smaug. What she is, in Navy’s opinion, is reliable.[break][break]
“Don’t think you’re wrong ‘bout Gabite. I like Garchomp better, but Vortigern’s middle kids look after the babies. They’ve got a responsible older brother thing going on.” Lizzy turns and yells at him, as if asking his trainer to quiet it with all the talking. Turning back to face the Gabite, she shrieks out a challenge. Her chest-wheel puffs out, the cycle dragon shifting gears ahead of the coming battle.[break][break]
“So, while I’ve got you, why’d you join Rocket?”

"that wasn't really my choice, he answers casually, his statement devoid of resent. "you've met guys from kanto, right? they know the deal with guys like me."

the gabite roars and releases a sandstorm on the field in the face of the cyclizar revving up. vision blurs as grit and dirt fly up to obscure the sights of everyone, more so on their eyes on the gabite in its sand veil.

"what about you? you didn't really mind talking with a rocket when we got our first match, but look at you now!"

a prominent member of the league!

footsteps from the gabite start to echo in the room as the sandstorm starts to buffet stronger. visibility starts to fade, both from sands filtering the light from the indoor lighting, and generally just from the sands in the air growing in volume.

“Eh…” League protocol demands this man’s arrest. Whether or not Priam is an active threat, he is a known member of Rocket. He has played on the trust of others before and taken valuable intel back to Rocket. A flicker of a faded memory makes him feel like he saw the grunt somewhere else, in some simulated reality of the war’s beginning.[break][break]
And despite all of that, he can’t muster up the energy to want to arrest him. Not when his eyes are drawn to the sandstorm. Thin Lizzy cries out over the building storm. Sharp granite digs into her, caught by the wind.[break][break]
“Spin, Lizzy.” She’s a master of speed. If she wants to win, she has to play into her strengths. While she makes her play, it gives Navy time to talk.[break][break]
“I can talk to just about anybody. Talking’s cheap. Planning on shooting someone while we hang out?” He hints at a smile. The words are playful. Rocket has already claimed his life once. What more can any of them do?[break][break]
Lizzy spins, and spins, and spins. She kicks up such a fuss down below, her rapid spin covering the whole breadth of the spreading storm. Priam’s Gabite has to be somewhere, and her sheer speed keeps the storm off of her. It’s an immature strategy, but Lizzy is an immature Pokemon.

the spins from the cyclizar was enough to keep strong winds at bay. dust and dirt with the sand keep visibility low as they float in the air, but it was enough to kill the winds' velocity.

"i'm the type of person to keep promises," he reminds navy. the promise was months old already by the time it got fulfilled, but he still remembered. "ya really think i'm the type to do that?"

then again, he still was a member of a terrorist organization.

the gabite remains unfound by the cyclizar. nothing remains on their side of the field, besides maybe holes dug on the ground that could trip the speeding lizard from high speed.

"priam conrad is a man of honor, i'll tell ya that! a rare breed in this day and age, i know, but what can i say? i'm an exceptional human being."

he continues to talk, unable to see what was happening due to his own sandstorm, but if he's getting responses from the gym leader, it meant that the gym leader wasn't giving instructions as well.

Navy knows he really shouldn’t, given they’re on opposing sides. Rocket’s the enemy. Big R Rocket. It’s hard to see individuals like that.[break][break]
“I know what kind of guy you are.” A chuckle punctuates the words. Priam speaks with a young man’s pride and propensity for staking their identity, but he does not strike Navy as young, exactly. Maybe young in the way Virbank makes men young.[break][break]
“Guess I’m the same. Or maybe I’m just a bad cop.” Once more, he speaks in good humor. Lizzy is lost in the storm. Neither of them can see their own Pokemon. Some of Vortigern’s brood enjoy employing this trick. They shroud themselves in a sandstorm, wear down their prey, strike. A Gabite doing this, rather than a full grown Garchomp, is impressive.[break][break]
“Lizzy, use your pulse!” Navy chides her. It’s good she’s getting this practice. If he took her out onto another battlefield, he worries about how she’d do. Cillian Quinn almost killed her, the last time Lizzy saw real action.[break][break]
Lizzy shrieks her obedience. The shriek becomes a hum of draconic energy. The dragon pulse spreads out across the field. She little notices the holes until she almost trips over one. By then, it is too late.

"aw, c'mon! no one that has realized the greatness of priam conrad's that bad!"

his gabite pops out of the hole, revealing that it has been digging. claws jab the cyclizar once it slowed down from almost tripping, utilizing its blind underside.

"if ya think about it, ya have the same eyes as the gods? why else would they give me the ability to locate the treasure of ultra deep sea? even that little azelf guy thinks i'm important enough to be visited!"

priam continues to talk about his accomplishments, if those could be considered as that rather than strokes of luck.

the sands continue to billow. they have waned from the cyclizar's efforts, but its presence remains, no matter how weak it had been within the last few seconds.

“Think I’d prefer the gods keep their eyes away from me.” He gives a glib response to his challenger. “Life gets messy when they show up.” Twenty years in another world messy. Cataclysm messy. I need therapy messy.[break][break]
“…but tell me what Azelf said. Must have been something important, if he showed up to talk to you.” He’d heard tales about Azelf speaking to people, but no one had ever addressed the matter so directly. That did, in fact, sound pretty important.[break][break]
Thin Lizzy is nowhere near as calm or composed as her trainer. She’s huffing, out of breath, panting and trying to keep her head above water. Sand whips at her, a Gabite’s claw rushes up from beneath her. Problems on all sides.[break][break]
There is only one thing a cornered lizard with dragon blood can do. She spins around, slices her own tail, disappears in a brilliant flash of light. She sheds her tail, biding her time. Another of the dragons is forced out in her place.[break][break]
Gramps is an unassuming thing, a Drampa found in the mountains on the edge of Dewford island. Humming, he sits on the edge of the sandstorm, not yet registering the creature inside as a threat. His howl is more the greetings of an old man talking to a younger one rather than a demand for dominance.

the gabite's claws find their mark on the cyclizar's tail, and the target ceases to be part of the battlefield. instead, it calls out its replacement.

"it's nothing important," he tells navy. "it's just part of the prophecy that has already come true."

with the regice's appearance, it has all but confirmed itself as part of the inevitable future that hoenn will eventually face.

"what happened in the resurfaced island is part of it. let's say the prophecy's sayin' somethin' 'bout how that's just the start."

the gabite stares back at the drampa, and after deeming it not aggressive, turns to priam for a moment. priam motions for it to settle down.

"anyways, are ya sure ya just ain't jelly? your friends do have their own after all."

another sandstorm slowly develops, compounding itself to the weakened one that barely holds anymore. a curtain of dirt and dust slowly forms once more, removing the vision from the dragon outside the gabite's zone.

Gramps sees the sandstorm kick up and starts to yell at the unseen Gabite. Who can say what he says in Pokemon speak, if they can even speak. He conjures a light screen, its invisible glass warding off the sand. He continues to yell at Gabite.[break][break]
“Jealous? Huh…” Is he jealous? Is that it? Some part of him feels like he’s still playing the part of the coward, like the boy he was so long ago. That man stayed on the sidelines, letting people like Kyle, Balder, Thomas, and all the others fight the wars that needed to be fought. Coincidentally, each, in turn, was blessed.[break][break]
“Kind of…” He pauses, voice trailing off as he thinks about how to word this, “…feels like, until some god notices me, I can still get off the ride, if I want.” Funny, he wouldn’t admit that to most people. What is Priam going to do, blackmail him?[break][break]
Besides, he’s in this for life now. He’s died for the League once. Chances are, it will happen again.[break][break]
“It feels like it’s a different person talking when I say that. I was…kind of a halfway crook before Galar.”

"i... feel you."

his role was already determined, however. the option has been closed for him since ages ago, but the same predicament that weighs on the gym leader's mind is something he can sympathize with.

the opinion doesn't fit the persona he gave himself, so priam quickly shifts his tone.

"b-but who cares?! can't just wait around doin' nothin', y'know. might as well do y'er job and get things goin' for ya."

he snaps and calls his gabite.

"sand tomb, gabby!"

the sands that have been accumulated start to press against each other, solidifying into one big dome. it condenses around them, covering the entire field that includes both trainers, minus the drampa who would rather sit outside the range of the sandstorm and stay passive.

gabite has trapped them all in his own sand tomb. the tomb covers the light from outside, and the split second of adjusting to the change in scene was enough to make one crucial move for victory.

"this is where you would go down if it was the real deal," he says in the dark.

“Don’t mind him, he just takes a minute to get wound up. Now, where were we?” Priam’s outwitted him, so the badge is his. The rest is just pretense and good conversation. Picking the brain of a man he’s heard stories about after their first meeting seems prudent.[break][break]
“Not gonna sit on the sidelines anymore, even if some god never tells me I’m a cool guy.” Leaning against the rail, he asks an obvious question. “But wouldn’t your side want you to take me out before something could notice? Seems like the smart move.”

he had a chance for a promotion, but he declined it at that time for reasons he isn't even sure of himself. it was always been difficult to read his own subconscious for the past few years, but he follows it nonetheless.

"but don't worry! you'll get up there on the kill list one day, bro! i believe it!"

priam turns for a moment to instruct his gabite to make an escape out from the dome. he'd seen the worry on its eyes when the drampa started to bang on it after all.

watching his pokemon dig away, he turns back to navy.

"if you're this accepting to other rockets, then shouldn't it be the other way around?" that leaving him around is the smarter move. "am i really the only guy you tolerate?"

it was a promise for a rematch though, and promises aren't meant to be broken.
