Dewford is no stranger to killing.

Over the past months, its been the centrepoint of many a bloody spat between the League and Team Rocket. Be it the war waged in the Ultra Deep Sea, or the conflict in the mysterious ruins off the coast, or whatever tragedy will next befall this misfortunate town, it matters not. The people are numbed to the idea of violence. They're tired of it. And yet, they've accepted it, because what else can they do? After all, they've been told this violence is necessary. The League needs to kill so that it can prevent the proliferation of evil. The bodies that wash up onto the beach are simply their burden to bear.

But the sheriff isn't called out in the early hours of the morning because of anything so mundane. No, he's not been summoned to witness the aftermath of a killing. No, he's not here to ID the body of a fallen soldier. No, this is not the turning of gears in a machine made to grind men into meat.

What happened in this unassuming alleyway, sealed by police tape and guarded by a few tired-looking officers, was a murder. And from what little he was told, it was anything but a necessary evil.

There’s gonna be more murders like these if I take that job.[break][break]
The sheriff quietly ruminates on his future as his truck rolls through the night. Window down, he takes in the cool scent of the sea outside. It’s chilly, too chilly for a region this tropical. Outside forces have seen fit to bless them with proper winter.[break][break]
Gods give, and gods take. Evil things lurk in his little town. They have for months, since before he was appointed the town’s peacekeeper. This feels different.[break][break]
Pulling his truck up as close as he can get it to the scene of the crime, he gets out. His headlights shine across the alley. He’s not alone. There are deputies, rangers, a small army of people who show up after the crime has been committed. If even one of these people had been here when it really mattered…[break][break]
Ruff!” Voyager, his Arcanine, barks, bounding out of the back of the truck. Dewford’s official police dog stays close to Navy. His internal fire gives the sheriff much needed warmth on this cold night.[break][break]
Wish Olivier was still around.[break][break]
Having a Gardevoir to sense latent emotions after killings like these helped immensely. He’ll have to make due. Evil waits for no one.[break][break]
What’re we looking at here?” Navy asks a deputy, sipping on lukewarm coffee.

"Far as I can tell, we're looking at a Pokemon-assisted homicide." The deputy replies, stifling a yawn as he glances past the yellow tape. He's a no-nonsense man, married to the law, dedicated to the dubious cause of justice, but he's still human. His eyes are so tired they're practically sinking into his face. Nevertheless, he soldiers on. "I count five claw marks total, one for each limb with a spare for the neck. The coroner's already on his way, but..."

The deputy shakes his head, as though dismissing whatever stray thought had wandered into his mind. Then, with a deep breath, he crosses over the "do not cross", and beckons for the sheriff to follow.

"Better if you see for it for yourself."

Not that there's much to see. Everything here has already been combed over twice by the experts, figuring out what's a clue and what's just garbage. Of all the alleyways in Dewford, this has to be one of the cleanest. It's so spotless you could eat off the ground, if you were so inclined. It makes what little evidence there is stand out all the more. The yellow evidence markers label them as such...

One, a muddy footprint near the entrance of the alley.
Two, a white feather stained red.
Three, the butt of a cigarette.

And four five six and so on and so on, all gathered around the body on the far side of the alley.

"Well? Notice anything odd?"
