and, when he thinks he's too close to one's tail, back away- just to bump into some awful decoration that releases a low pitched, demonic "ho ho ho merry christmas" that can only be found in things that haven't had batteries replaced in a year.

which, in this case, would be understandable if it wasn't absolutely fucking terrifying. like, the stuff of nightmares.

once the chaos has (somewhat) died doing and aster thinks he can move without risking stepping on a cat, he looks up- just to see the source of the chaos, cats and all, standing behind an elderly old woman who looks like she may kill the poor cashier. or the source of the cats- they look like if they have to stand there a moment longer and hunt down their pokemon, they'll just keel over.

it's more the fact that aster doesn't want his holiday ruined by seeing a death rather than any sympathy that leads him to speak up.
