"Lookin' good, ranger!" He said as he arrived at their designated arena, slapping his heel against the cobbled stone beneath him twice before grinning. "Let's try and not make too much of a mess here; this arena seems a little classy."

Read: Old. Seemed like the local ~~grandpa~~ veteran trainers would chew them out if they damaged the place too badly.

"Have you been doing well so far, Ms. Chene?" He asked as he threw out Kama, helping his scyther stretch briefly as he chatted up the pinkette. "Cause I haven't. It's actually been pretty funny."

He could only laugh. Even with the excuse of being there merely to have fun, he felt a little embarrassed with his performance so far.

Ages ago, when she'd first arrived in Hoenn, John Sullivan had been one of the first people she'd battled.[break][break]

It's a bit embarrassing to realize that she hasn't really improved all that much since then. She's definitely gotten better, but Doug's badge is still the only one that rests in her little carrying case, gathering dust.[break][break]

"Oh, thank you! So do you, Monsieur Sullivan! Your hair really suits you." There's always time for pleasantries, after all! At her side Sugar nods in agreement, waving her ribbons towards the opposing pair in greeting.[break][break]

"We're doing...okay, I think?" At least by her standards. "But we're mostly just here to have fun. I hope you're having a good time too! Let's make this a suuuuper exciting battle, okay?"

"Why, thank you kindly. I grew it myself." He said, before cracking up with a laugh.

Besides him, Kama rolled her eyes, before stepping forward onto the arena. Tapping her foot against the cobbled stone briefly, she tested her balance upon the uneven flooring before focusing on their opponent.

"Looks like Kama's done with her preparations." Doug commented, before nodding at Luka with a smile. "Right then— As you say, let's have a good one!"

Kama dropped low, spreading out her scythes.

"Begin! Go, Kama!" He ordered, prompting the Scyther to launch forth, lunging towards her opponent before attempting a sudden leap over their head, moonsaulting over her while swinging the back of her scythes at her.

TL;DR:

It still elicits a small laugh though, and it's not pity! Rather, Luka is just glad to hear someone else having a good time.[break][break]

While they share pleasantries, Sugar plods onto the battlefield and begins her own preparations. However, unlike Kama, these merely involve a long, languid stretch and a bit of preening. Her ribbons curl around her as she sits and blinks over at her opponent, eyes bright and attentive.[break][break]

"Mmm...I guess we're ready as we'll ever be! Good luck!"[break][break]

The battle begins with a flurry of action. Kama moves so quickly that Luka can barely make out her blurred form. Sugar leaps to her feet and sprints forwards as well, though the sudden leap takes her by surprise. In the time it takes for her to relocate her opponent, there's a prominent opening for the Scyther to strike.[break][break]

However, she's quick to retaliate. One of Sugar's ribbons spools out, attempting to grab the Scyther by the leg and pull her out of the air. But her attack is two-pronged; she launches a shadow ball at the same time, giving the oversized bug two obstacles to try and avoid.[break][break]

It seems that she's not fast enough, however, and the attack against her strikes, sending her tumbling backwards.

With the fight well underway, the crowd's roaring rose and fell with the ebb and flow of combat, each clash between the two pokemon drawing low gasps and excited cheers.

Having managed to grab a lucky lead at the start of the fight, Kama was eager to maintain the dominant position in the battle, going for an aggressive offensive.

Still, she lacked the toolset to truly pressure her opponent, with no supereffective moves and only a singular unresisted move at her disposal. She had to play it smart.

Her arms would constantly blur, her Vacuum Waves blowing against her opponent to keep her at bay while trying to fish for an opening with her feints. And when she thought she saw one...

She lunged!

Her opponent is fast. Sugar is quick when she needs to be, but she doesn’t have the same kind of raw speed on her side. The Scyther has started their fight extremely aggressively, and it’s a struggle to keep up— but it’s too early to give in! [break][break]

In order to get the upper hand, she attempts to distract her opponent and become a harder target to hit. Misty terrain spreads across the field, obfuscating her body with clouds of soft pink. It’s far from an impermeable cover, but it’s something at least! [break][break]

The vacuum waves cut swathes through the mist, and Sugar uses those thicker clouds to try and hide in. She darts around in the fog and tries to hit the Scyther before she can reach her, her dazzling gleam lighting up the mist so brightly that for a second, it’s completely blinding.

As ever, Kama's early leads never lasted. One would hope she would learn after so many battles, but perhaps the old adage of old dogs not learning new tricks rang true.

I don't know, how do you justify consistently terrible dice rolls across 20+ battles?

Kama is sent hurtling back sizzling by the blinding dazzling gleam, her scythes coming down unto the pavement with ferocious force as she forces herself to grind to a stop...

"OI, MIND THE MASONRY, IT'S HISTORICAL!" An old dude spectating the fight chimed in as if on cue, waving his cane.

Doug palmed his face, sighing.

Kama did not give a crap, however, growling angrily before launching into the offensive yet again. There was no intention to lose here— nor of holding back.

Her scythes were swathed in a deep crimson light as she reeled back— before sending a storm flying towards her opponent.

TL;DR:
-Kama used her Z-move: Heaven Cleaver.

"Way to go, Sugar!"[break][break]

Luka beams over at her Sylveon, fists clenched in triumph. For a moment there, they'd managed to break through their opponent's relentless offense![break][break]

But it's clear that neither Doug nor Kama will be deterred by such a setback. The crowd continues to roar, though for now it's unclear who's favored to win. Doug and his Pokemon seem the obvious choice, but there's something compelling about the adorable underdogs as well.[break][break]

And neither of them seem to mind the destruction they might cause their surroundings. As Kama summons her powerful z-move, the misty terrain around Sugar begins to twist and spiral as well. A crimson storm meets sparkling pink as Sugar's springtide storm clashes with the heaven cleaver, causing a blistering wind that tears through the center of the arena.[break][break]

Luka squints, trying her best to see what's happening within the twisting winds. Once they clear, who will remain standing?

As the dust cleared, the battle was revealed to not quite be over. But if a winner of that exchange was to be crowned, it certainly appeared like Kama had taken less damage than her opponent.

"You've got this, Kama!" Doug cheered out for his Scyther— or rather, tried his best to offer support.

Because she did not look nor feel like much of a winner, panting hard as she swayed from side to side, her weight shifting from one leg to the other.

She couldn't lose here, though— not again. She had suffered so many losses in the tournament already. She wanted to win!

Clamping down her teeth, she shifted from a sway into a low crouch without warning, her thigh muscles briefly bulging before she suddenly exploded forward into a mad dash, lunging towards her opponent with a spirited cry.

But when the field becomes visible again, it's clear that the Sylveon is struggling. Her movements are slower, her reactions not quite as sharp as they had been. She works best at a distance— against an opponent that prefers close combat, she's at a clear disadvantage.[break][break]

However, they aren't going to give up yet! Though she's struggling, Sugar still makes a valiant effort to get another hit in. She can't compete with Kama's speed, so she chooses a full frontal assault instead. Her dazzling gleam shines so brightly that it might blind the Scyther and give her the split second needed to strike back.[break][break]

Only it's not fast enough. Kama's attack hits first and Sugar goes flying back, with Luka crying out in alarm.

Kama's carapace still sizzled and steamed from the dazzling gleam, her eyes blinking rapidly to try and shake off the brief blindness inflicted upon her. She groans, sinking to one knee whilst panting.

Until she feels a familiar hand on her shoulder. The burning feelign wracking at her disappears within seconds after, her wounds knitting themselves together as Doug squats besides her, patting at her gently.

"Ya did great, Kama. The crowd's roaring for ya." He said, patting her in the back.

As Kama turned her newly brightened eyes to the roaring crowd, Doug turned towards Luka and Sugar, jogging up towards them.

"Ya two did great, too." He called out as he approached, smiling. "Ya've gotten a lot better since the HsT, pinkie. Ya must've been training a lot."

He looked over sugar, crouching down near the trainer and pokemon help.

"Want me to get her back on her feet?" He asked, raising a pink glowing hand.
