There were few people he could trust to help him with this. When he stated his intentions to League high command, they looked at him like he was insane. Cracking his knuckles, pulling in the best trainer he knows, Navy sets out on a mad, quixotic quest.[break][break]
“Nobody can say it won’t be a cool story to tell the king, huh?” He asks with a grin, marching off to the monster’s last known location. When they get there, it’s going to be a fight. Struggles and fights are just part and parcel for their nature. Doubtless, Kyle would prefer to be somewhere else, maybe back in a base playing his game console.[break][break]
Instead, he’s been dispatched to help catch a monster spotted wandering near the camp. Gouging Fire they call the beast. It is the equal of Walking Wake, the beast that terrorized AQUA last year. With Kyle by his side, he feels confident in his odds.[break][break]
“After seeing you trot around with your Entei, kinda wanna grab one of my own.” The grin spreads. “Mine’ll be cooler, ‘cause he’s part dragon.” Kyle and their shared friendship makes him feel young again, like the man he was before Galar. He’ll need that vigor if they’re going to flirt with death.[break][break]

"dragon and fire is kind of a good type combination after all."

his turtonator had been one of the more used pokemon in his arsenal back in the days. with the high-paced nature of hoenn, however, kyle supposed that it was much better off lent to members of slateport pd than join with the chase of the hype.

"do you want to get a saddle for your paradox entei too?" he asks. "they might be banned from the silph cup, but they're actually comfy to ride on."

it was soft, and plush, and warm. they provide more cushion compared to other pokemon that kyle can ride with its fur on while sacrificing none of the speed and power.

he blames Josh Devlin for putting the thought in his head with his obsession with races.

“Ride it?” He asks the question aghast, shocked by the notion. Shock is replaced by the proverbial hamster wheel turning in his mind. Eventually, he shakes his head.[break][break]
“Nah. You seen Gouging Fire’s head crest? Wouldn’t be able to see over it. Guess that makes it a good shield.” A dry laugh accompanies the words like the soundtrack to a silent film. [break][break]
“Man, it’s been too long since we’ve done field work together.” The sudden uptick in his voice brooks no argument to his opinion on the idea. Lopez and Navidson. There’ll be stories about the duo, if they manage to make it across the event horizon.[break][break]
“Your Smeargles holding up okay? Imagine they must be on suicide watch after what happened during that swarm in January.” They had almost caught the eye of the Almighty with a trick Kyle devised first. Even if it risked the destruction of the multiverse…it’s also damn impressive, in the Elite’s estimation. [break][break]

"oh, they look like that?" kyle hasn't seen it yet, and has only seen the one that looked like suicune. "that isn't as cool as the suicune one, then."

his expectations have now been pushed back to manageable levels.

navy was right though. their schedules never manage to line up for both of them to be open for actual missions together. it doesn't help that whenever kyle has to show up to catch up on his quota of work, navy has already worked himself to the bone with other enthusiastic volunteers.

"yeah, they were pretty spooked," he informs navy. "it felt like imprison, but more, um, supernatural. the rules of the world were rewritten in front of us, after all."

he smiles as he turns to navy.

"i had my sygna suit on that time." meaning he was connected to his smeargle in a much deeper level. "it made me think my existence was going to be deleted right there and then."

this is why it's bad for him to get in with navy. kyle either kills his own productivity by filling the time with needless chatter instead of concentrating on work, or navy drags him out of his comfort zone since he can't leave him alone in spearheading the reckless shenanigans he's always done.

"don't worry about it," he dismisses easily and casually. "it's not really a big deal."

although the experience was harrowing, it wasn't too different than what most other people experience. kyle thinks he still has it easy compared to those who purposely involve themselves in complicated messes, such as the person in front of him.

regardless, they have a hunt to do. surprisingly, one appears at a convenient time.

"maybe if you stand on its back like a scooter or something, then you can see above its thing," he tries to argue, but it's too much of a stretch that it becomes an obvious joke.

from his waist, he takes out a pokemon: one that navy will be familiar of its use.

"you should catch one and try it."

he whistles to his pokemon afterwards. a howl triggers a song for a rain dance, summoning clouds that bring a drizzle to the battlefield. effective against a fire-type like entei, and effective against a paradox pokemon that relies on the sun.

Water, Navy knows, is an excellent conductor of electricity. Cracking his knuckles, he points a dramatic finger forward.[break][break]
“Shuwen! Let’s go! Punch the shit out of-” Shuwen’s surging strikes are stopped by a burning bulwark. The battle bear blinks. A meaty clunk signals that the fist has been stopped.[break][break]
An explosion sends Shuwen flying back. Gouging Fire roars in triumph, thinking that the bear is done for. Shuwen lands against a rock, making a bear shaped indent.[break][break]

not that he can judge. he doesn't have that much of a standard as any other person out there either.

as kyle was about to issue a move, the earthquake rocks the ground. the manectric appears concerned, and kyle is worried that he might have chosen the wrong pokemon for the job.

he's not sure why the paradox entei seemed startled as well though.

"thunder wave!" he shouts, breaking free from his worries.

his manectric paralyzes the pokemon from afar, breathing a sigh of relief when the pokemon doesn't appear to be a ground-type because of the earthquake.

"so it's like a turtonator?" he utters blankly after all has transpired. "i missed the guy. i should use him for future missions or something."

as of right now, most of his pokemon were available to be rented out by his fellow officers at slateport as long as it's for work purposes. he wonders if his turtonator is having fun.

“Man, if life had a camera, you’d turn around and wink at the motherfu- aaah!” A sudden rumble of the earth almost makes him lose balance. Exercise and training pay off, along with a convenient pivot into a tree that catches his fall. Navy doesn’t even see Hattori slip out of his ball just long enough to redirect him.[break][break]
“Man.” His repetition of the word is huffed frustration, like a dragon having to deal with another annoying intruder in his lair. “These damn earthquakes. They happen on the reg down here.”[break][break]
Gouging Fire roars, until it doesn’t. The paralysis takes hold. Whatever trick the creature meant to play is stopped in its tracks. Kyle likes propping others up, and the thunder wave certainly helps. It leaves Gouging Fire open when Shuwen charges in, leveling a barrage of close combat punches against his vulnerable belly.[break][break]
“Bring Turtonator out with you more, man. I’m sure he’d enjoy the exercise.”[break][break]
Or, an intrusive thought interjects, he’ll die like so many other Pokemon do.[break][break]
“You know…sometimes, you meet a guy, and all the cool scenes come after. Not every meet-up has to be a damn tragedy.” He smiles like the thought never occurred. “We kinda just met. All the dramatic stuff came after.”

it's a common anime trope that comes up a lot in shoujo titles during the old days.

the paradox pokemon activates burning bulwark once more, but the manectric's rain dance does its job once more: helping out the urshifu's strikes while damping the gouging fire's retaliation.

"you've been hanging out with the angsty people again aren't you?" he teases.

as far as he knows, the people that he knows that navy was friends with all had the same gloomy outlook in life. kyle, who originally was pessimistic to a fault, had to hold back since it killed the mood.

"when's the last time you hung out with someone normal?"

It’s what he adores about Shuwen and Hattori both. They’re independent while still being great partners.[break][break]
“Arceus, that’s gotta be Eddie.” Eduardo Hisakawa, the latest in a line of people Navy resolves to see survive this war. A good man, older than Navy or Kyle by at least a decade but still holding onto the vigor of youth. “This construction worker I met down here turned soldier boy. A casual step back helps him avoid Shuwen, who was shot like a missile towards them where they stand and discuss. His bear gets up, surging with infinity energy. If there’s one thing that helps break through protection moves, it’s that they take time to recharge. It creates an opening. Shuwen lumbers forward.[break][break]
One fist turns into three, which turns into nine, on into twenty-seven. On and on he punches. Shuwen’s surging strike combo hit would make Kyle or Gabe proud in a round of Street Brawler.[break][break]
“Hope he doesn’t go through what I did in Galar. It, well…hard not to angst.” There’s no humor or joy in the smile he gives Kyle. “Wish you could’ve met Crystal and Raphael. They’d like you.”

"huh? that name sounds familiar..."

an image is quickly connected to the name when he mentions construction worker. he just looks like the stereotypical one, though he wasn't aware Eduardo Hisakawa joined the military.

"wait, that guy? who got him in the military? the guy was a tour-"

he remembers that hoenn isn't exactly a destination for normal people and that ending is within the sphere of realistic plot developments for him.

"is he really normal though? he went to hoenn for a vacation. nice guy though. gave me a book for palentines."

the manectric joins the fight and gets its hands dirty. when the urshifu lands its blows, the manectric gives its tick damage for the sake of it. quick attack hits its ankles, but with a strong base, the gouging fire probably doesn't notice it.

then again, it was already close to giving in.

"who are they?" he asks. the mention of galar gives him a hint, but he'd rather not make assumptions. angst and galar pretty much leaves a lot to imagination.

Maybe he just hasn’t wanted Kyle to see that grief, to have it clinically analyzed by someone who’s trying to save scum the routes. he wondered if he hung out with kids in that world. he does play with children in his hometown, but that wouldn't translate well with medieval settings of that fantastical galar, he assumes.

the paradox entei is captured, and they're left with nothing else in the agenda with their objective complete. what comes next is just random spitballing of ideas on how they'll spend their afternoon together, like the good old days.
