it's a pupitar who's too complacent for its own good. it never sees the attack coming because it never does. armaldo's fatigue catches up to him as he stands there, slumped over, panting as he eyes the ground. nikolai doesn't blame him.

"we're almost done. come on."

just one more. it's always just one more. but armaldo doesn't disobey because he's loyal. his CRUSH CLAW is too bruised to use again so he relies on X-SCISSORS from range. it slices against pupitar's hard skin but doesn't draw blood. it won't be that easy. a STONE EDGE erupts from the ground and smacks right into armaldo; even with a swift sidestep he's unable to fully avoid it.

armaldo struggles to his feet but makes it because this is not how he'll go. a barrage of X-SCISSORS continue to fly. it's a slow and begrudging battle but there can only be one victor.

today, it's nikolai. a pokeball captures his spoils.

she asks a question he isn't willing to answer, but he's not one to spoil the fun, especially not when he's however many drinks in. he stops, paces himself carefully even though it might have been too late, and slides the glass away from him. the bartender is quick to refill.

"yes. it doesn't help."

he's truthful and that's more than she could ask for. he leans in closer when she speaks. "what can i do to help?" he asks, leaning an arm against the counter as his eyes roam.

"to help with your nightmares."

bubbling laughter turns into something else the moment their eyes meet. his movements are predictable because he's giving her a chance to back out. but when she doesn't, that's when he fully commits to losing himself in the moment, allowing himself, even if just for one night, to be happy.

that's something that's been lacking in his life: just sweet, pure, innocent bliss.

her lips find his. she takes him to the ground as his back meets the cold surface, but in that moment he doesn't feel the cold; all he feels is her. his hands are free to wander though one settles on her thigh as support, slowly moving underneath the hem of her skirt.

his other finds the side of her face, cupping gently as his thumb caresses. she's on top of him for as long as he allows it, and one he's had his fun, he shifts underneath her and uses the momentum to guide her to the floor.

he never stops exploring: he tugs at her shirt then slides a hand underneath it, feeling the warmth of her skin as he moves upwards. they break once, maybe twice, to catch their breath. but he doesn't want to stop. he can't, not when she makes him feel this good.

relief overcomes him at her words and it feels like a weight has been lifted off his shoulders. a man can only bear so much guilt until it breaks him; nikolai has carried his for far too long. it's a wonder he hasn't broken more than he already has. perhaps a part of him still remains fighting, unwilling to give in.

her words make him look up—"no, stay." again, abruptness gets the better of him as he's unable to control his emotions. he's not too sure why. he takes a deep breath and tries to calms himself, though the harsh beating in his chest reminds him it's difficult.

"please stay, thalia."

her name brings back careful memories, ones that he has no qualms reminiscing about. he gestures to the chair by the bed, asking for her to sit. he speaks only when the door closes behind her.

"i don't remember the incident." he cuts to the point because he knows why she's here. she's always been too curious for her own good. "i remember pieces; little flashes of memories; but not the whole thing." it's frustrating; his face portrays it well.

"why is that?"

maybe he had been a bit too eager and had roped her into a battle she never wanted, and with every word she speaks it becomes clearer and clearer that he's in the wrong. the worst part is that she's blaming herself.

"you're not wasting anyone's time, dear."

he interjects when the moment is right. "and no you don't look like an idiot. if anyone looks like one, it's me!" he chuckles to break the tension.

the facade of the charismatic and charming gym leader is shed to allow for a more personal moment. a ghost of his past resurfaces through his smile and his words.

"come on," he gestures her over to the side of the platform and sits, folding his legs in as to avoid the water that surrounds them. "you said you were a fresh recruit?" he aks even if she didn't follow him.

"your pokemon are stronger than they look and they trust you, and that's what's important. you just need to be a bit more familiar with them." he gives her a moment to process his words. "you already have a bond with your team that's strong; use it. learn their moves! that's most important."

he smiles at her. "i'm not the best role model for you, dear. but i know potential when i see it." it might be a lie but it's a lie he's willing to tell for her because it's one she needs to hear.

it's a lairon who's too aggressive for its own good. it has the first attack with a METAL CLAW that manages to scratch through armaldo's HARDENED exoskeleton. it draws blood which makes armaldo's facade falter, breaking for moments but it's all the lairon needs to crumble a ROCK SLIDE atop armaldo.

the cave goes silent.

it takes him far too long but eventually armaldo busts out from underneath with his CRUSH CLAW slashing away at lairon. his claws dig into the exposed skin its armor can't protect. blood for blood, a final CRUSH CLAW slams lairon into the wall, fainting it.

it's a druddigon who's too curious for its own good. nikolai notices it before armaldo, but that's nothing new: his spatial awareness has always been one of his strong suits.

armaldo is quick on the prowl with a CRUSH CLAW aimed for the dragon's head. the impact feels equivalent to slashing at rock: the dragon's head is harder and doesn't break as easy. its ROUGH SKIN hurts armaldo and allows it a chance to retaliate with a CRUNCH into a strong DRAGON TAIL to separate them.

but armaldo's stronger. taking the crunch, he PROTECTS himself with his exoskeleton and swivels on his feet, turning to deliver a precise X-SCISSOR to the vulnerable skin of the dragon, downing it instantly.

her haxorus is as cocky as she is; that fact isn't hard to read. they're similar in that regard; in fact, they both ooze it. the way she commands her dragon with such strength and bravado is similar to how he approaches the whole concept of training. there's no doubt about who's the alpha on her team: he's looking at her right now.

haxorus' buffs are noticed the moment it starts thrashing its head left and right. he sees it coming from a mile away and yet, he lets it because he needs to send a message. the moment the haxorus rushes forward is when he takes control of the battle.

click.

haxorus is quick but not quick enough. armaldo's intuitive PROTECT crashes into the body of the dragon, blocking its OUTRAGE. her first mistake is assuming she has the high ground. another click tells armaldo to capitalize with a swift CRUSH CLAW to the dragon's foot, targeting what its armor can't protect.

haxorus is locked into its OUTRAGE.

"you'd be wrong, darling."

the battle spirals out of control but not in a way that he's familiar with. her reaction to the unfolding battle tells the tale of someone who's way too nervous; for reasons he actually can comprehend because he has a firm idea. orders spill out of her mouth but nothing comes of it but confusion. her pokemon are as stranded as she is.

the battle pauses with three clicks of his tongue.

"hey—it's okay."

he sheds his obligations to continue the battle for a moment as he jumps across platforms, crossing over the cold water before reaching the one she's on. he approaches her calmly.

"why are you so nervous?" he asks a rhetorical before breaking out in a chuckle. "calm down, dear. it's only a battle! if you lose, you lose. it's not the end of the world. you can always come back again later, i'm not going anywhere." he won't, but the gym will. but that's a tale for later.

he offers her a compassionate smile; one that he doesn't normally portray. "is this your first challenge?"

in truth, she wasn't bad at spying: she simply chose the wrong person to spy on. his reputation as rocket beast tells the tale of someone who's fierce and capable; one doesn't get assigned this reputation out of good will. one has to earn it, and he certainly has. it's not hard to notice someone who's trying to achieve what he's already earned.

her answers are without substance. they're pretty at surface level, like her, and for a moment he wonders if she shares the same connection.

"i think you found it."

a charming smile envelops his features as he reaches for her glass, shifting it closer to her. "you said one drink and this is your second. no point stopping now, is there?"

he takes his shot.

the littlest of skips in his heart and the knot in his stomach tells him he's enjoying this more than he should. he's not sure why; he attributes it to the alcohol, but maybe there's more to it than that. her laugh, her smile, they're infectious; she's infectious, and yet he welcomes her with open arms because he'd choose happiness even if it comes at a cost.

"you practically took it from me."

words interlaced with his breath escape in the form of hushed, warm whispers as they roll the exposed skin of her neck. the moment she leans into him harder is when his lips find her neck, kissing, tainting as he slowly moves to her collarbone.

his hand finds the side of her face, gently cupping as his fingers weave through her hair, brushing loose strands to the side. her giggle makes him break into a smile, interrupting as he pulls back for a moment. only a moment.

he leans to kiss her.

something sparks within her and even though he doesn't see it, he feels it. she suddenly becomes chatty and graces his question with an answer he doesn't expect. one that manages to catch him off guard. by the end of it, he's impressed, but not silenced.

"i don't think you are, darling."

she's pretty and those are the most dangerous ones. he speaks from experience. "you'd be wasting your time because there's nothing of value in the cave of origin. i don't think you have a talent for spying." he takes a moment to let silence fill the air. "your best bet would be the civilians, yeah."

the moment fleets when he picks up his glass to finish off his liquor. the bartender goes to refill but nikolai doesn't pick it up yet.

"it is. how long are you staying?"
