cait hesitates - albeit briefly as her verdant gaze flicks past the woman. there was something odd in the lack of a physical presence outside of her door that was accompanied by an unusual stillness that was rarely felt. 

"come in."

her tone was urgent and her volume carefully measured, the woman urging emma to enter her home. once the frantic woman was safely tucked away, she'd strain her eyes somewhat as she peered into the murky shadows of night. 

'i don't see anyone or anything.'

cait decided to ignore the prickling of her sixth sense in favor of tending to the familiar woman. but only after she had re-secured the locks to her door, guiding her to the nearby couch. she rested gentle hands upon her trembling shoulders, seeking to soothe her whilst questioning her. 

"tell me what happened," she said. "you said something about a monster?"

cait rose with a start, her slumber thoroughly interrupted by the presence at her door. her shaymin remained asleep, likely unperturbed by the noise despite the slightly muffled shouts that successfully reached the pair. the former gym leader removed herself from her bed, a look of alarm on her face as she closed the distance between her bedroom and the front door. 

"what in celebi's name ?"

she jerked the door open, her fingers having fumbled at the locks for a few moments before she succeeded at revealing the woman there. 

"you?"

cait blinked dumbly, standing there and staring at the female as her gaze lingered upon her face.

"you're - are you okay?"

night descended upon them in the usual way; the sky having only just transitioned from a pale blue to a deeper and darker shade of its former color. the noises of the forest which surrounded a lonely cabin quieted somewhat, replaced by the easily identifiable calls of her bug-type pokemon. the lights within the home shined dimly through the windows, movement and the faint scent of a freshly cooked dinner originating from within. 

that too would eventually quiet, only one lonely light left that originated from a bedroom. the woman within having only just emerged from her bathroom to prepare for a bed; appearing to be covered in a night slip and a pair of fluffy slippers that vaguely resembled leafeon in design. 

"the water's a bit cold," she murmured. "i'll see about having my uncle swing by and fix it when he's got the time."

she retrieved a bandanna and went about tightly wrapping her hair prior to slipping into bed, her tiny shaymin mumbling unhappily as they shifted a top the sheets before curling tightly into a ball.

"sorry about that, baby."

cait slipped herself beneath the sheets after giving the creature a friendly pat, retrieving her phone for a moment to look through her messages prior to plugging it back into the wall and turning off the lights. it didn't take her long to settle, the work she had done today to fix up her new home having worn her out by sizable margin.  and while her cabin was - at the very least - presentable, she wanted to further augment its interior to better suit her needs. 

her breathing slowed within minutes and her own soft snores joined her shaymin's.

'she's beautiful.'

that was the first thought which crossed cait's mind as katherine took her place. her own response to the woman's politely-worded greeting delayed by a single beat as she unabashedly eyed the dark-skinned female. 

"you haven't."

the gym leader put on a smile that oozed a curious amount of warmth.

"it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance."

she dipped her head and a pokemon leapt into view, emerging from the forest which bordered the field. it was a pokemon whom she had been working to train for the past few months - a personal gift from that had been graciously bestowed upon her sometime ago. 

"this will be a one on one," she began. "the last pokemon left standing will determine whether or not you're worthy of my badge. whenever you're ready you're more than welcome to the first move."

"it has."

the woman was comfortably seated on the opposing side of her field, a cushion settled between her and rough stone of grey. she appeared slightly distracted, though her gaze appeared to be fixed upon asher.

"thank you for asking."

with that being said, her attention flitted toward the single pokemon whom was situated at her side. the creature appeared visually unremarkable at first and even second glance as it blinked dully in asher's direction/ 

"this will be a one on one," she said, helpfully. 

her lombre strode forward as cait gestured, lazily taking up their position upon the field. 

"the last pokemon left standing will determine whether or not you'll acquire your badge."

cait paused for a moment, a hint of a grimace forming as her head cocked to the side.

"you are here for a challenge - correct?"

she flashed him a genuinely apologetic look, her painted lips spreading into a slight grin.

the dual-type glimpsed the future, allowing him to adjust and roughly gauge the trajectory of his following attack. his eyes narrowed upon the roserade as it bolstered its strength, the bipedal creature coiling his muscles prior to lurching forward. without a verbal prompt from his mistress, he sought to cross the distance between himself and his foe.

a dynamic punch sprung forth, his arm extending dramatically as he aimed toward the creature's chest.

the fire's blast was unpleasantly hot, leaving singed feathers and tender flesh in its wake. her togekiss nearly became unbalanced mid-air, flapping unsteadily for a moment.

"steady." 

cait granted the pokemon a brief window of time to recover before issuing another command. 

"sky attack." 

her togekiss plunged toward the fire-type, a slight grimace tugging at his features as he did so.

"a reserve unit located in fortree. i'll report in once every few months." 

cait sounded slightly distracted as she prepared their individual treats. it took her a small window of time, but eventually she;d be handing kim an expertly rolled blunt on their way out. 

"i'm actually moving someplace close by. there's a cabin and a huge patch of land out here i've acquired the rights to," she said, appearing pleased. "more than enough land to accommodate both myself and my pokemon."

she produced a lighter, setting the tip of her own blunt aflame before surrendering the cheap tool to kim once they were outside. 

"my reassignment should pass over your desk. nothing you'll need to sign off on, of course. just a report to brief you on what's going on."

she considered both options for several beats, her painted lips lightly pursed.

"i'll accept the latter option."

it'd offer her a far more reliable source of income, money that she'll desperately need since her paycheck would be halved in the coming months. and while her savings account held a considerable amount, it would run dry in a year's time. 

"i'll be in the reserves," she said, shrugging lightly. "so i'll need to locate ordinary work regardless. so why not silph co.?"

"i'll need a brief window of time to resettle. a month at the most - a fortnight at the least. afterwards i'll be taking on any personal assignments you have for me."

she had a solid idea of where she'd live; a location where she could raise her pokemon and allow their population to more easily swell in number. they'd be allowed to fight - to hunt - to establish territory and more freely select suitable mates and produce offspring. cait had every intention of ensuring they were kept entirely under her jurisdiction; but pokemon with a wild edge proved far more potent in battle. 

"i look forward to being apart of your team, sir.  a change of pace is what i've been looking for. while i enjoyed my work as a gym leader - i genuinely missed being out in the field."

she glowed with excitement at the prospect of reacquiring her former title.

" - i guess i'll go back to being lieutenant alfric."

alfric paused briefly and then decided to make one more request.

"i'd also like to request a monthly stipend on behalf of my pokemon. i want to ensure they're in proper health, electronically chipped, collared and prepared to go to work at a moment's notice. they'll be entirely at your disposal, of course."

"they should be fine," she said. 

she shoots the pair of children a glance, noting their desire to remain within a close proximity of their mistress. they were at that age where they were entirely dependent; which meant they weren't wont to wander. 

"i have good news, actually."

the girl happily takes a seat, her movements and the look in her eye betraying her excitement.

"i'm being reassigned," she announced.

she was unwilling to wait to present him with her change of station. 

"no more active duty for me."

cait reached into her basket, producing a package that produced a barely noticeable reek. 

"do you want me to roll one for you? we should probably smoke them outside and leave the kids in here so they're away from it."

wartortle shifted his gaze onto his mistress, awaiting her instruction. she appeared to be in the midst of mulling over the stranger's response, her eyes narrowing before she beckoned for her water-type to return. 

"i haven't."

cait shifted her focus toward the local fauna, straining her senses to make out the subtle sounds of webbed feet upon wet stone. 

'nothing dangerous,' she thought. 

"you're the only person i've seen for miles. or would the more appropriate term be knots?"

she didn't await a response before moving to walk past the woman.
