tangrowth bodily flinches as her vines bounce harmlessly off the protect, her round eyes betraying her alarm as well as her bemusement. eventually she'd release a gurgling noise, the sound apologetic as she recognized her error. 

'it's okay,' cait soothed, internally. 'we'll work on it.'

while the gym leader's thoughts perhaps didn't reach the tangrowth, the grass-type sought to recover and make up for her mistake. she expertly wielded her vines without having to be told, seeking to batter the canine with the glowing appendages by use of power whip.

"extreme speed."

her pokemon carefully tilted his wings, gaining air and distancing himself from the field. he'd hover momentarily, his muscles flexing beneath his fine feathers as he prepared himself physically and anchored himself mentally. in the span of seconds he transitioned into a blur, his gaze fixed upon the bipedal fox as he sought to ram mercilessly into its lithe form.

cait didn't trust ghosts - the girl viewing them less favorably than she did dark-types by a sizable margin. and while a handful occupied her gym, she still felt a tad suspicious whenever she encountered one.

'you don't follow a beckoning ghost. you maintain your distance and go on your way.' 

her great aunt had died long ago from following a trail of litwick when she was naught more than a little girl, after all. cait's uncle had even spent countless nights telling tales of unfortunate encounters with ghosts; and horror movies certainly didn't help.  

"hit it again," cait said, her gaze hardening.

if she could understand her pokemon's native language, she'd have heard a drawled out 'gladly' as the plump fairy formed another moon blast; the orb promptly flung at the less-than-mobile ghost.

the girl muttered an obscenity as their foe began to recover, regaining consciousness and propelling themselves forward with whatever remained of their dwindled energy. her primarina's eyes rounded for a moment, before he produced a sneer in reaction. 

"sparkling aria!" 

her command came just in time, the pokemon's locks unraveling as the steel-type dove. a frothy explosion came as a result, both pokemon obscured upon impact. it would eventually clear, revealing who was the victory of the battle. 

"primarina..." 

the pokemon lay limply upon his size, his eyes squeezed tightly shut and a grimace twisting at his beautiful features. eventually the expression grew lax, his grip upon consciousness lost. cait's gaze lingered upon the beast for several beats before she gave a nod, realizing that she had lost.

"it looks like you've won," she announced.

with the dual-type's defeat she'd step forward, producing a badge which signified that gavin had conquered her gym.

"your badge." 

she'd press it gently into his hand, a hint of a smile tugging at her painted lips. 
 
"i wish you luck on your journey to the elite four."

"amnesia."

the dragon pulse impacted the pokemon, causing her stance to shift somewhat as a grimace passed over her previously dull expression. though her mistress's words encouraged her to press onward, a consecutive amnesia administered upon herself as she continued to bolster her defensive potential. 

"that's it, girl," cait crooned, approvingly. 

her grass-type blinked owlishly, appearing to be at a lost as her wide head tilted from side to side.

"i will. we wouldn't want you dying out here."

cait is satisfied enough that they had remained civil - their last encounter making for a fresh enough memory. and while the desire to verbally prod at the fellow propped itself up within her mind, she decided against it.

'we're stuck out here for a while yet,' she said. 'it'd be a shame if things became even a little bit awkward.'

and it felt nice to speak with kyle in a casual sort of way again. it vaguely reminded her of before she transitioned into becoming a gym leader; when she was fresh-faced and bright-eyed.

'and how long ago has that been now? over a year? nearly two?'

she chuckled and shook her head, beckoning for her felines to fall into line.

"we're headed back to camp."

her purugly nudged her leg, likely sensing that aught was amiss.

"it's nothing," she assured. "nothing."

"i asked - "

she sucked in a breath meant to anchor her mentally - meant to steady the shakiness of her tone. cait didn't want him to perceive her as weak; as needy; as desperate. but - 

" - what i'm doing wrong," she repeated. 

another beat.

"i tried getting too close and made myself look like a fool for it. i tried verbally declaring that i was loyal - but it was like you took it with a grain of salt. and then i tried maintaining my distance and  earning your favor and your trust by way of hard work and self-improvement."

the girl raised her gaze, her green eyes glittering with a potent swirl of emotion.

"but still you preform mental gymnastics - word play, even. and it's entirely unnecessary."

she put her folder aside, stood and walked closer to the desk before firmly planting her hands upon it. cait leaned forward and toward her superior, her words kept below her usual volume.

"i want you to tell me what you want," she seethed. "so i can make your dreams a reality. i don't want a muddled - or a contorted - or a twisted version of it, sir. i just want you to give me a clear cut order; so i can obey it."

her wartortle steps forward as the sound of pursuit drew closer, the pokemon visibly alarmed at the sight of a human woman and her marshtomp as they rounded a corner. but he regained his focus as he noticed a rhydon at their heels, the turtle easily bypassing the pair to rush the enraged creature. the rock-type soon ramming itself into the solidly built walls of a protect, a grunt of surprise escaping it as it stumbled back. 

"war." 

the water-type allowed the construct to fall, quickly closing the distance to deliver a fiercely administered aqua tail; which proved to be more than enough of a deterrent as the wild beast promptly fled. 

"who - "

cait stared at the pair, a suspicious gleam in her eye as she maintained her distance. 

" - are you?"

anderson's opener was crafted around defensive measures - which was indeed a wise enough decision. it tossed one potential stratagem out of the window, but cait proved competent enough to adapt to such a minor inconvenience.

'i suppose we'll prep as well.' 

"amnesia."

the pokemon's expression grew increasingly dull as her defensive capabilities were bolstered, the usage rendering her forgetful in that moment.

"water," she began. "followed by shelter and than food. the human body can't manage without the former but can last  without the latter for a reasonable amount of time.."

the young woman was genuinely surprised kyle wasn't at least somewhat familiar with the basics. but she decided against judging the man in favor of educating him on survival.

'i don't want him suffering needlessly out here.' 

"because my accompanying pokemon are mostly carnivorous i encourage them to provide for themselves. let your mightyena hunt for their own food and perhaps even provide you with a source of meat."

her persian and luxray had already begun to make their way into the shallow waters, their eyes sharp and focused. 

"before eating any of the local vegetation - berries included - place a piece of it on your skin. if it causes any irritation you need to toss it. if it seems safe enough place it on your tongue and then chew it - but only a very small portion to avoid..."

cait continued to offer a handful of tips, her pokemon offering the mightyena a wide berth and eventually proving successful in retrieving several magikarp and even a decently-sized finneon.

cait's gaze lingers upon the man for several beats before a certain look passes over her face, the one which betrays mild irritation.

her finger taps at her thigh, one hand left the grasp tightly at her folder as she struggles to maintain her expertly crafted facade.

'i don't understand.' 

she had began to slowly yet surely reconstruct herself into fernando's ideal subordinate. the young woman had worked for no less than a year to become someone that he could rely upon - that could be - 

"what am i doing wrong?"

she muttered the question quietly to herself, her brows furrowing as her expression twisted into one of frustration.  the girl burned a metaphorical hole into his desk with his gaze, the look transitioning into a potent glare.

caius would be directed toward another section of the gym, the familiar face of infernape popping up to gesture toward the more heavily forested section of the gym. he'd find cait tending to her rapidash, the young woman grooming the mare's flank with a soft bristle brush. the pokemon lazily grazed as she did so, nipping at the lengthy bits of grass that sprouted from the soil.

a small ponyta was at her side, the foal observing cait with open curiosity as she worked. 

"caius?"

the young woman responded to his call, taken slightly aback by the sight of him. she appeared to be in her working attire, the outfit composed of a pair of stained denim jeans and blue t-shirt. her hair was tied back into a ponytail, though it was admittedly on the messy side. 

"i didn't expect to see you again so soon," she admitted. 

cait gestured for him to approach, her brush still in hand.

cait removed her goggles and breathing device with a sigh of relief, having only just slipped into the cavern after a lengthy swim. her green curls were soaked through and had been arranged in a neat and no-nonsense ponytail; her chosen garb a dark green and skin-tight diver's suit. the journey to this place had been made manageable by her selection of pokemon, the woman accompanied by creature's well-acclimated to the deep. 

"looks like we made it."

her wartortle remained outside of his capsule, chosen to escort her into the damp cavern. and with the aid of a powerful flashlight, both she and him navigated its depths. the distant sounds of someone or something resulted in them taking care to generate little noise, both unaware of the presence of iris and her marshtomp counterpart.
