They had managed to defend the Primal Point, it had fired, and surprisingly enough, the world hadn’t ended. Hooray! No apocalypse! Hoenn lives to see another day! Even if he were in the mood to cheer, Tam has never been the type to do as much, and that doesn’t change when Dialga is freed and when Rocket begins their retreat.

He’s exhausted.
[break][break]
He thinks of the theatre, wondering if Team Rocket had found their way in. Passingly Tam considers going to check on things, but then he sees it: the tears in Orion Lykos’s eyes. There it is again: the knowledge that Orion hates him for all of this, for stopping him from killing Chu-e Choi and instead apprehending him. It hurts, but as Tam does best, he pushes the feeling away, burying it as deep as it gets.

Guard the primal point, make sure Chu-e Choi doesn’t escape (you never know what an avatar might pull, even when still unconscious and babbling nonsense), and look after Orion Lykos, Caleb Harcourt, Hailee Jacobs, and Noah Camus.

Tam takes a deep breath, and it’s over comms that he then addresses the League’s forces.

”This is Ranger Captain Fawley. We apprehended one of Rocket’s avatars. I’ll await further instructions on the matter. Over.”

He’s not police, his job is not to arrest people, so as far as he’s concerned, this scrawny and unconscious criminal that is somehow extremely dangerous will be taken wherever dahlia goode deems most appropriate.

Once the transmission is over, his attention turns to the Slateport rangers around him, and a simple question is asked:

”...Are any of you injured?”

He’d ask if they’re alright, but even someone as poorly attuned with other people’s emotions as Tam is can realise what the answer to that is under these circumstances. His gaze lingers on Orion. There’s nothing he can say that will make things better.

”Let’s heal up. We should be able to go back to Slateport soon.... Good work today. All of you.”

There's a strange feeling with those words. He's proud of them, even if Tam may not realize it there and then.

In the grand tradition of workplace activities that everyone ends up obligated to participate in due to peer pressure, the Slateport Rangers had organised their own holiday gift exchange. It had not been Tam’s idea, for the record.

Two weeks ago, when everyone had written their names in neat little pieces of paper and then drawn someone else’s, the captain had been convinced that this is a work obligation, and that misconception had not been cleared even now that he walks into the break room with a plainly wrapped present and pizza for everyone.

Now, the breakroom of the Slateport Ranger headquarters generally isn’t particularly impressive. It’s spacious, as far as breakrooms go. There’s a large table, a couch, appliances, even regularly-stocked vending machines… and these days, as if for the sake of giving it a sprinkle of “holiday spirit” there’s also a small artificial tree sitting in a corner – topped with a golden Jirachi ornament and everything. Garlands adorn the windows with a perfect view of the empty training grounds, and the doorframe where everyone had marked their heights (the newest 4’11” written by Genevieve Cromwell finally having dethroned the fake 5’2” he had given Orion Lykos as the shortest in the squad) is now topped by a mistletoe that someone had likely put there as a prank. There’s even fruitcake on the table, although for some reason it remains untouched…

”Okay, so… Who starts?” Tam asks after putting the boxes down by the fruitcake, because while it’s his duty and obligation to take the lead when work is concerned, he had not been the one to plan this. For now, the recipient of his gift remains secret.

In fact, this is his first Secret Santa, or whatever it is that Hailee Jacobs had called it.

If Marshall were to actually ask, he would find out that Tam doesn’t really like how much time he has to spend sitting in his office. There are many reasons for this, some of them being obvious with how outdoorsy he is, but one of the main ones is actually right there before Marshall: the energetic Yamper who accepts his petting and praise with happy barking and a wagging tail.

Tam had found Clover when he had first become a cadet in Slateport, and one of the many things he misses is taking her out on patrols with him.

Alas, this is just how the job goes, and Tam being Tam, he had learned to accept it just as he learns to accept most things.

”One of these places.” He echoes when returning to his desk, his tone as neutral as ever. He finds it funny, but of course he doesn’t think of making that much obvious. ”What did you wanna ask, then? Figured it must be important if you came all the way here.”

There’s always a cadet assigned to sit at the front desk, perhaps one day it may even be Genevieve Cromwell herself. On this day, however, the young man that leans back on the office chair greets her with a chuckle, looking her up and down before making an educated deduction:

”You’re the new kid, eh? Captain’s waiting by the training grounds out back.”

Of course, he could have told her that while Tam is punctual, he is also, in fact, not particularly strict, but sometimes cadets just have a thing for messing with new trainees, don’t they? Call it a little bit of health hazing.

At least he hadn’t lied.

The captain does indeed stand by the training grounds: leaning against a tall tree, clad in a suit, and with a cigarette in hand. He’s not one to smoke indoors (not at HQ, at least, his own house is another deal entirely), so he takes the chance to do so while waiting for the newest trainee to arrive.

Nearby, a Yamper plays with a ball he had just tossed for her: Clover, Slateport HQ’s unofficial mascot.

Tam Fawley is just about the last person in the world who would ever just sit around and build a snowboy. He hadn’t done it as a child, and he sure as hell won’t do it as a grownass man. But this grownass man just so happens to have been born and raised in Icirrus City, and a good and proper snowy winter is… Well… He had missed it. Even if he won’t admit it.

The cold bite of frost, the sound of the snow with every step, the imprint left behind; all those things awaken strange, nostalgic feelings. The fact that the Ranger’s PR Team are the ones organising this had been his personal excuse to come support the event, but in reality he’s here because he wants to be… and because of Clover.

As if on cue with this thought, the Yamper in question barks excitedly by his side, having taken notice of Ranger Cadet Genevieve Cromwell. Tam gives her a slight and simple wave in greeting, but Clover runs towards her through the snow, taking hopping steps and looking fucking adorable in her little Stantler sweater. To keep her warm in this weather, of course, even if she seems as comfortable as Tam is in the snow.

Tam really spends a solid moment thinking about it when Orion points that out, but ultimately, despite the fact that they’re currently having a movie night, he absolutely draws a blank. Leave it to him to completely miss what would likely be obvious to most. Typical Tam.

Thankfully for Orion, he also misses the hopeful notes in the suggestion.

Just like that, agreement is spoken as they watch the movie, and for a second or two, Tam is pleasantly distracted by thoughts of going to the movie theatre with Orion. The music soon grabs his attention once more, though… as do the strange sounds coming from outside.

He tries his best to ignore it at first, he really does, but when something hits the window just as the movie’s soundtrack hits its most suspenseful moment, he can’t help but noticeably tense up and instinctively move just so slightly closer to Orion.

Well, soon enough that sentiment finds itself enhanced, reinforced, and goddamn doubled. All it takes is Lily devolving back into a Pupitar after having dealt with a bunch of pesky Megalopolans who probably were looking forward to eating them as lunch.

”...What the fuck?”

See, Tam had had his orders: take part of the Slateport ranger squad to Littleroot, protect the town from Team Rocket’s attack, and make sure they don’t get to the primal point. All that was well and good, and he had done as the League had asked even when things got way crazier than what was originally anticipated.

Tam’s apathy only goes so far, though.
[break][break]
They’re out here trying to save the world, but at that moment, when seeing his Tyranitar get hurt, when seeing the same thing happen to the pokémon of his squad around him… The world is not what matters. His attention is not on Dialga anymore, not on Team Rocket, not on the Megalopolans, and not even on the whispers of a likely-still-unconscious Chu-e Choi. His attention is on the man who had commanded the legend to attack them all.

Lily is called back to her pokéball for her own sake, much to her dismay. In her place, he releases a seemingly harmless Klefki. The same Klefki that had been the only surviving egg after his battle against Cillian Quinn, and also the same one that had aided them in apprehending Chu-e Choi.

”See that guy over there?” Despite it all, it’s with his characteristic calm and composure that Tam nods towards Chef Quanto. ”Get as close as you can and use Steel Beam.”

He knows the danger that comes with it, the implications, but there is still no hesitation. He simply watches as his pokémon (and by consequence also Chu-e's Lopunny) moves in for an attack, only one thought remaining prevalent in his mind: to get Orion Lykos, Caleb Harcourt, Hailee Jacobs, and Noah Camus out of here safely.

In order to do that, first they must deal with this.

A war with a criminal organisation, a meteor coming to end the world, Ultra Beasts, legendary pokémon, and motherfucking Dialga being summoned by some genocidal asshole from another dimension. Great. Peachy. It’s just too fucking much, isn’t it?

Tam searches within him, looking for the will to care, but he just… doesn’t.

Orion Lykos hates him, the world is fucking ending, and they all may just die in one moment. Why the fuck do they keep fighting each other?

All Tam knows is he has his orders and that he would very much like to live to see another day.

This is what drives him.

So, while chaos reigns around him, Slateport’s Ranger Captain shifts the weight of the unconscious Rocket avatar he’s carrying over his shoulder, having apprehended Chu-e Choi after stopping Orion Lykos from using lethal force. One handed, he reaches into his pocket and lights a cigarette, watching the shitshow that surrounds him.

A tall stack of papers lies neatly on the captain’s desk: paperwork, mission reports from the last couple of days. Calmly, methodically, he reads through them – impassive sky blue eyes analysing every sentence from behind glasses. His expression never changes. His thoughts on the results remain hidden.

The change happens when the Yamper that had been peacefully sleeping on her bed in a corner of the office wakes. Her long ears perk up, she sniffs the air, and with an excited bark, she gets up and quickly walks to the door with the full intention to greet the man standing at the other side.

Tam looks up then, his gaze meeting Marshall’s.

Faintly, if only for a second, he smiles.

Rising from his chair, the captain walks to the door, opening it for his friend. Unlike most people in Slateport Ranger HQ, he does not wear a uniform, but a simple suit along with the armband expected of his rank and profession.

”Hey, Marshall. Come in.”

He doesn’t know every detail about why they’re meeting like this, but he can take a guess or two. Still, it’s pretty damn unusual, isn’t it?

It’s not obvious. Of course it isn’t. Not to him, at least. As far as Tam’s aware, there’s no reason why anyone would actually want to go to the movies with him. If anything, they’d probably just agree out of politeness.

Still, he takes a second to think of who’d he’d invite if he had to choose someone, and out of all the people he knows, it’s actually Orion that comes to mind.

”True, you are, but it’s cute.” It’s said in passing, as nonchalant and blasé as it gets, because it’s what Tam thinks and in the case of things like these, he doesn’t even stop to consider if he should or shouldn’t say it. Why would he keep something like that to himself?

”Sounds good. Have you watched it?”

Taking some popcorn, he watches as the movie begins, already feeling the slight tension that comes with the all-too-ominous music.

”Not really? It always feels kind of a waste to just go alone when I can watch stuff at home.” Tam explains, his attitude about such things being as blasé as ever. The truth is that going to watch movies rarely ever crosses his mind; he’s much more likely to want to do something outdoors.

Perhaps he should bother with taking a look at the movie’s title, then he would be somewhat prepared for what’s to come, but of course Tam doesn’t. He simply goes sit down, taking the popcorn with him.
