[break][break] "i'm captain annalise henderson," she offers in distracted greeting, glancing his way and then immediately focusing her attention downhill for signs of movement. "you must be ranger akiyama."[break][break] the ghost-type floats lazily toward her side, searching for anything to LOCK ON to. annalise doesn't indulge them in idle conversation with enemies near, but she does ask toki a murmured question eventually:[break][break]"have you ever been sent out to deal with poachers before?"

[break][break]delight warms her features as Grigori Sokolov reveals he's an avid baker. in flashes, she imagines sitting in this living room, sipping coffee and biting into some homemade pastry. while this guy might be a little strange, she thinks he'll be an excellent addition to their household if he's good at baking. [break][break]"we have the basics. i thiiink we have a stand mixer in one of the cabinets but i'm not sure — i'm not much of a baker myself." she shrugs. "you're welcome to use whatever you find. as for allergies, we should be all clear on that."[break][break]she motions for him to follow her down the hallway. it opens up into the kitchen at its end, but she doesn't take him that far. instead, she passes the bathroom, door slightly ajar, and opens the closed door neighboring it. [break][break]"this is your would-be room," she announces, reaching into the threshold to blindly feel for the light switch. light spills in from the window, then suddenly from the ceiling light overhead. it's a sizeable room with a decent enough closet, but it's in a pale and unfurnished state. "you can look around if you want."

[break][break]"sorry."[break][break]a glance at her pinned wrist is enough for her to notice the thin red line against his skin. she settles in the dust and tilts her head back to look up at his face, eyes tracing the assuredness of his grin. he's been smiling this whole time, she thinks, but it's only here, from this perspective, that it dawns on her. "[break][break]she looks down between them. she has a hand free and her hips are open — her strategy returns to something familiar. her fingers furl into her palm. she swings her fist at his jaw, leveraged by a pinned arm and the shift of her hip. the punch has no power to it; it's just a demonstration. [break][break]"have you flown something before?" she moves to sit down, but something on the dashboard grabs her attention. she moves to the front of the ship, squinting at the text. "white hair. appeared. said. here origin point? she. searching ... took dark stone."[break][break]her face clouds with worry. the mention of an origin point lingers with her even as she takes her seat, settling like a rock in her stomach. in her dreams, annalise knows the desire swirling around in her head isn't real. she finds people in neon-lit streets, some of them familiar and others not, and tells them not to look in the mask, to not believe their toxic chain is salvation. the wellspring mask doesn't show the future. she knows it doesn't.[break][break]but each time, consciousness rushes back in and this certainty crumbles like gravel off a cliffside, plunging her back down into the dark. she wakes up in a panic, sitting up on her cot, fearing fezandipiti has seen the dreams that aren't her own. [break][break]they can't be her own. [break][break]the toxic chain is her only way out of this prison. it promises her escape and whispers revenge each time she looks at THEO BECKETT. he will die. she will be happy. it gets her through days subjected to laughing hour, through beatings endured from the creature she and Greyson Connors saw in rks.[break][break] and then, at the end of each day, she eats and lays on a hard cot and feels her delusions slough off her mind as sleep claims her body. [break][break]each night, she searches for her pokemon. each night, she finds them as she left them a dream before — suspended in a glass display, unresponsive no matter how hard she hits her fists against the glass. this time, she leaves them to venture deeper into the city in search of something that could be of use to them. [break][break]a tower protrudes above bright buildings, giving purpose and direction to her wandering. she finds its base. she finds a pokemon she's never seen before suspended within, unconscious like her pokemon. fingertips touch the glass, eyes searching for vulnerabilities in the casing. she sees none, but she does see someone on the other side of the display.
[break][break]Remiel Calcifet, his figure refracted in the strange fluid between them. in her dreams, her hate is the commanding influence on her mind once more. and yet —[break][break]"calcifet."[break][break]— should she warn him? to better her odds of escape?[break][break]her mouth opens again, but her thoughts muddy. she can't really hear the words as she speaks them, can't tell if she's taunting him for being trapped here or offering him help. just as she comes to understand her dream is disintegrating, she feels tidal wakefulness break over her. [break][break]she shoots upright in her cot, heart hammering as her heretical thoughts blunt against the absoluteness of her toxic chain. tears drip through the bottom of her mask, landing in protectively cupped palms. she deserves to relish in the impressed look in his eyes, to smile self-satisfied that she drew her knife before he could manipulate the ground into something deadly but she just feels a tangle of guilt as the adrenaline leaves her system. for a moment, he had been an echo of everyone that had ever hurt her, vulnerable beneath her. [break][break]but she sees him now. MATIAS SILPH. looking steadily at her instead of the knife. he grabs her wrist to move the knife away, but she's already in the stages of withdrawing it anyways. annalise doesn't feel cocky. she thinks comfortable is a better word for it, maybe. she feels comfortable here, with MATIAS SILPH, in a simulated fight where she knows they aren't actually trying to kill each other. she takes the rest of his critique with minimal pouting, readied for it by the preceding gentle pat on the shoulder. [break][break]she's acutely aware of something against her skin, but it isn't him this time. she lets him guide her hands into place, but it isn't necessary anymore. she knows where they belong. she knows the steps to throw him over her shoulders, just as she can approximate the spot where he'll land after knocking him down twice before. [break][break]and she knows the flash of silver that appears from within her jacket. she's imagined this with so many rockets, but a split-second of clarity reminds her of the man below her. she doesn't follow through with dragging the blade across his neck, even though she can feel the lingering itch in her fingers. [break][break]she stops holding the handle against his throat and sits up on top of him, chest rising and falling with effort. her eyes wander from his face, looking for his killing blow.
