A hand reached up to tuck an errant strand of pink hair away. It just fell right back out. “So…” Her nose wrinkled up. “You’re like a zombie?” Even if he wasn’t actually dead, he might as well be. Not that she was any better. A birth certificate? Any kind of legal proof she existed? Harper didn’t actually have any. Or, if she did, it was stuck in a bunch of rubble in some unnamed place.

“So, you’re like what—” Harper peered at his chin for a minute. It was hard to guess someone’s age with nothing but their ears and chin to go on. But he did talk kind of high-pitched! “Thirteen?” She tilted her head. “What’d ya do to get someone to actually hate you?” Sure, people got mad at her for stealing. But she never felt the urge to change her name, put on a stupid mask, and go into hiding. People thought kids were stupid, so they got away with a lot.

The pink-haired girl pondered for a minute. “Kinda? It’s kinda hard to tell what he wants sometimes. But that's cats for you.” She answered.”But we wanted cash, and they paid the most.” She lifted her shoulders in a shrug. “Rocket doesn’t make me sit in a classroom all day either.” She smiled at him. “What got you down here?”

Harper peered back up at the dark man. Those red eyes were reminiscent of a feral cat. Full of panic and teetering on the urge of lashing out. Those initial hits were about as useful as hitting a wall with a feather. Her Pokemon wanted to intervene, but she was in the way.

This didn’t stop the Tinkaton from lifting its hammer though. Little arms even went so far as to draw it back. She just had to be super-duper careful about which leg she crushed! It’d be cake. But, before she did anything, the guy dropped like a ton of bricks. Tinkerbell blinked in shock—dark eyes flitted to her hammer to make sure it hadn’t fallen.

If he’d gotten to finish that question, the pickpocket might have played along. Some weirdos just gave her stuff. No strings attached. Others were total weirdos. With her hand free, Harper danced out of Raphael’s range. “Serves you right! You shouldn’t just grab somebody like that! It hurt.” Never mind the fact that the pinkette had been trying to fleece him like an overgrown Mareep.

The righteousness quickly faded, however, as the guy dropped to his knees. Curious, the wannabe kitten leaned closer. “You, uh, okay, mister?” She gnawed on the inside of her cheek. “I didn’t kick ya too hard, did I?”

The creature burst out of the hallway with a guttural, hungry noise. CRASH! The door opened with enough force that it smashed into the lockers. A metallic noise reverberated down the hallway. Red eyes caught the Megalopan’s for a moment, a shiver running down Harper’s back. “Mr. Dorian, what’s wrong with him? Why’s he going after your—”

A frightened squeak emerged as its bluish ichor sprayed across the tiles. The thing clawed mindlessly at the hole in his chest. With a hiss, it slumped forward. Sluggishly, blood dripped beneath it. A noise—somewhere between a gasp and a scream tumbled out. With a surprising burst of speed, the teenager took off down a nearby hallway. “CAS!” Cumoo followed with a look of panic.

The sound of the confrontation had apparently woken more than one Megalopan. A fact soon confirmed as another handful staggered out a doorway in front of her. “Shit!” Harper slid to a stop right in front of them. Her heart pounded. A glance over her shoulder revealed another group of hungry Megalopans. Suddenly, their blue skin didn't seem so funny anymore.

“Hey—uh—” She tried to forget the dead man’s expression. The mon slid forward. “--ya guys wanna see a card trick?” Her heart pounded as Cumoo began to glow red hot.

The bug’s rudeness went right over Harper’s head. She was way too busy fretting over her BFF to care what some flying cockroach thought about her. It wasn’t like she was waiting for popcorn at the movies! This kind of stuff was life and death! At least, she thought it was. She was a pickpocket, not a doctor or something.

Come on! Come on! Harper crossed her fingers more tightly as time ticked on. Every minute felt like an eternity. Or, well, even more so than it usually did. At Hideo’s question, her eyes shot up. The thief’s crimson gaze was wet—teary and full of righteous anger. “Both.” The pink-haired girl hissed. Her nails dug into her palms as she stiffened. At his warning, something uncharacteristically fiery thrummed in her chest.

The danger was brushed aside with all the bravado of a spitfire kitten. “If they do, I’ll give ‘em what for! I ain’t going to be as nice as I was earlier!” As a recent encounter showed, a nice kick to the balls could be way more effective Or, if the ladies came out, to the taco. Still, the blind kid’s next words drew a frown.

She hadn’t robbed a Pokemon Center ever—just the clients wandering outside of it. They probably wouldn’t stop her from going in there. “I mean—I don’t need you too.” The thief was quick to reassure him. “But I’d appreciate someone to watch my sixes.” Just in case those assholes came slithering back like the slippery snakes they were. “I’ll pay you back later!”

Maybe he’d take some fake Rolexes? Dad had plenty of those.

Harper gently stroked the cat’s dozing face. Sure, he wasn’t Moo, but they’d come a long way since she found him in an alleyway. The cat was the first one to push her toward magic and always willing to lend a paw. He was pretty cool for gutter trash. And, he was her family. “It isn’t like those guys play fair.”

As the cyclone closed in, Harper couldn’t resist throwing a glance its way. The grip on her Castform grew tighter as the maelstrom threatened to rip him away. Hundreds of feet shrank into a few handful of yards. Rocks and rubble disappeared into the thing’s hungry maw. But she couldn’t stare at it for long. Just looking at it hurt her eyes. It was like black but waaaaay darker. Even when she squinted—feet planted on the building’s stoop—she couldn’t see through it.

A black flash made her head snap back to their destination. Her eyes—watering—focused just in time to “Hey!” Harper took a step back as the puppy raced in. With little regard for the adults, she barged in right after him. “You coulda said excuse me, yanno?” Leaving the door ajar—as the weirdo asked—Harper moved deeper inside the building. The dim light from the ajar door helped enhance the glow coming off her now Sunny Form Castform.

What the heck is this place? It feels like a prison. Harper looked at a row of metal boxes. They looked like they’d been mauled by something nasty. She reached out to pull a flyer off one of them. Her head jerked up as something clattered further down. “You know—” Her mind turned briefly to the classrooms her foster parents had thrown her into. How stupid she felt trying to figure out numbers and letters from a base three or four years below her grade level. The eThe teenager fell back as the sound repeated itself. “I might hate school, but I’ve never seen one this bad.”

Eager to protect his trainer—and perhaps hoping to prove he was more than a babysitter—Cumoo drifted toward the strange clanking noise.

It was weird seeing Daddy’s face like that. His amber eyes were soft, filled with concern. He pointed at the printout for the hundredth time and then all the rules. Most of it was super-duper obvious stuff: no wandering off with strangers, no being obnoxious, and no wandering off. A few odd rules were in the middle though. One underlined about putting out any flashlights.

Then, of course, came the image of the whatchamacallit she’d been sent to collect. It looked like a gem. Apparently, it gave off weird readings that the eggheads in research wanted to take a look at. A location was sent to her phone. And, depending on who she snuck out with, she’d have to break RULE 3 to nab it. But that stuff was all BS anyway. It just stopped people from suing or whatever.

A wave was given to the two old guys she’d found herself saddled with. Stretches began as she prepared herself for a jump into a weird place. She didn’t really get what alternate dimensions were or where they came from. A Castform bobbed around her head, straightening her clothes with little bursts of air. At her heels, a Tinkaton stood with its hammer poised to strike.

As the portal opened before them, Harper jumped through it without hesitation. There was a sensation of falling and then a murky, almost sea-floor-like darkness. Big red eyes examined the area around them, growing wider with each heartbeat. “Whoa.” A clumsy whistle emerged—she’d never been good at them. The whole place was trashed. It reminded her of the time she had to rob a frat guy.

The advice for caution was met with a flippant grin. “Yeah, yeah! I know. I’ve already heard that like 37 times today. I’m a kid, not stupid.”

But this bravado evaporated as she spotted the undulating, twisting thing moving toward them. “What—?” Bright eyes widened as she saw the twisting, undulating thing moving toward him. Her voice dropped to a whisper as she moved closer to Dorian. It was as if she was a toddler expecting a game of peekaboo to banish a tornado. Her heart pounded as she glanced at her Castform. “I don’t think we can—” The buildings on either side started to rattle, lights snuffing out one by one.

“Moo!” She grabbed onto Dorian’s sleeve. The little weather ball frowned as he floated in front of her. A Hurricane was tossed at the thing in hopes of reversing it or slowing it down. Maybe it’d buy them enough time to—to—there.

Among the rubble, she spotted a half-open doorway. The old, half-dead phone in her pocket began to flicker. "C'mon!"

The man’s admission made the pickpocket blink. What a lame intro to magic. Harper’s had come courtesy of one of the meth heads on cannery row. He’d been a pretty big deal in Unova before he got caught fleecing his audience. Even though he’d only made a flower appear, it made Harper’s whole night. For days after, she pestered Daddy about how he did it.

Even after being told, the act seemed just as cool. It was like stealing but people liked it! Sneaking stuff where it didn’t belong. Grabbing things out of places it did. Making fricking Arcanine disappear? That shit was sweet as hell. Her voice was full of reverence and awe. “Your first magic trick?” She stared down at the worn cards, frowning for a minute. “Not exactly able to judge me are ya, Mister?”

Again, the stunned blink followed. “What kind of stuff?” Had he never snuck into a rich brat’s birthday party before? Watched some boring old movie with CGI magic stuff? “Just didn’t have the funds?” After a moment, her eyes lifted to the Castform over her shoulder. It pressed its gelatinous lips into a thin, stern line. It shook its head—twice.

“C’mon!” She shouted. As she stood, the little card table was upended. The papers not in her hand clattering to the floor. “I got an idea!” She grabbed for his hand intent on dragging him deeper into the alley.

The pinkette blinked at him. Did she know how to actually use the stars? She craned her head back to observe the robin’s egg skies above. It was almost as if she expected an instruction manual. Finding nothing but a cloud that looked like a Wooper, she chirped, “Nope!” Her shoulders lifted in a shrug. “But medieval people could do it—it can’t be that hard.”

It was probably a lot like how she navigated the city from a central point. Usually a skyscraper with an antenna.

In other words: she’d figure it out.

Harper turned to the Castform. At Dorian’s words, the little jelly ball nodded enthusiastically. Though, he wasn’t sure he liked agreeing with this Mad Dog behind them. This guy was definitely bad news. Even worse than that slimy, crippled cat who called the shots. But Dorian was right. He did love Harper! Even if she’d stolen him from the lab eons ago. She was family. “I know he loves me. It’s just annoying. You don’t see Daddy hovering around me like that!”

You never really saw him around at all. Not anymore.

Dorian’s next words made her raise an eyebrow. Her voice increased in volume as the Flygon’s wings beat more rapidly. “And what ways are those?” Even as she asked, Harper was pretty sure she knew the answer. “Books can’t teach everything, yanno?” She shook her head. “Ya can’t learn back flips or lock picking by reading about em.” And, in her mind, this whole Indiana Jones thing was just like that.

“I know! I know!” She returned her Flygon as she slid her way down the ladder and into the ruin’s center. “I ain’t gonna activate any booby traps or nothing!” The Castform at her side shifted into his Sunny Day form. His gentle yellow glow lit the tunnel ahead.


Harper pushed forward; she figured now wasn't the time to mention she forgot what they’d come here for.

Hearing Dorian behind her, Harper turned to face him. “How old do you think this place is?” She grinned. “Do you think aliens built it?” That’s what the TV guy at the pawn shop said.

The path in front of them was well-traveled. A pretty good sign nothing dangerous was out here.

As the man ignored him, Twiggy couldn’t resist a huff. He’d been practicing that for days! And this goon just treated him like the yellow signal on a traffic light—gave him a single glance and sped up. Holding his yo-yo, the cat watched as his trainer drew closer to her target. Sure, she did card tricks, but this was the real magic.

The girl did her best to draw in silently. She waited for another woman to walk by, diving in behind her. As subtle as a summer breeze, her fingers dove for Raphael’s back pocket. Even from a distance, red eyes could see a pretty nice bulge. And she didn’t think it was a banana. Her fingers edged past the seam. Carefully trimmed nails brushed pay dirt.

“!?” A vice-like hand crushed her wrist in its grasp. “Shit!” Harper gasped, instantly pulling back. “I wasn’t doing anything!” Her fingers clawed at Raphael’s grip, resembling an animal caught in a trap. Whatever he said wasn’t heard. Let go! Let go! Let go! All she knew was that she was caught and she didn’t like it. It’d been years since someone nabbed her like this. Waterworks threatened—the good old Krookodile tears.

Dropping his yo-yo, Twiggy raced over to help. But it seemed his trainer reacted quicker.

This guy was big. He could brain her like an egg—kid or not.

Instincts kicked in.

She tried to drive a knee into his junk.
