What was it with children and attitudes? Oh right, their swirling mess of hormones and lack of parental influence. Thanks, Rocket, for your severe lack in parenting skills.[break][break]

Apparently, Emma's intimidation factor had waned since their last meeting on the yacht. Or maybe the beast simply had a soft spot for children and was too damn tired to worry about baring teeth and making little girls wet themselves.[break][break]

People are only so strong- and Emma has always been stronger.[break][break]

He was a man living in fear. A man desperate to protect someone that he loved, desperate to hold onto something that was important to him, something he didn't trust anyone with but himself. It was noble, sure, but it was stupid. She didn't blame him for not putting his faith in Rocket, because she wouldn't do that either.[break][break]

But look how far that'd gotten her.[break][break]

"No, I'm making decisions."[break][break]

Emma watches him, relaxed in her scrutiny. The way Killian reacts to her every movement, to her every word only encourages these 'assumptions' he's says shes made. All she sees are red flags, all she sees are lies he's convinced himself are his truth.[break][break]

"You put your trust in the wrong people, and are shocked when they betrayed you. The people you thought you trusted weren't Rocket, and that makes you the fool, not me."[break][break]

She tilts her chin down, her expression is severe.[break][break]

"Rocket wants to protect this region and its people. It wants what's best for society, what's best for the world. We are the solution, we are not the disease. It is the weak, it is the misguided and the afraid that is our greatest weakness, the parasite that prevents us from doing what we need to do."

Emma remains silent, and instead, slowly presses her chin against his shoulder. There is no use arguing with him on something he's right about.[break][break]

That, and the easy-going gait helps to calm her. Ironically, in his arms she feels secure. Emma's breath is warm and steady against his neck, indicative that she is falling asleep.

The first thing she notes is that he is warm. It seeps through her clothing and against her skin. Admittedly, it is comforting. Subconsciously, Emma leans into it.[break][break]

Although his demand is almost insulting, her hand moves on autopilot, pulling the smoke away from his lips. The man's muffled responses clear up, though the smoke in his lungs she can hear worsens the gravel in his voice.[break][break]

But he would find that she is incredibly light, perhaps scarily so.

The pain in her ribs is excruciating, blotting her vision with white. Each breath rattles in her chest and her head aches. More than likely, she's bumped her head again.

Realistically, the woman should never have been out in the field.

Emma let's her rifle slide off of her shoulder, sinking down as her signal of releasing control.

She exhales and it echoes in her mind, a hitch in her breath. He's caught her off guard by using her first name. Her shoulders are stiff and she digs in her heel.[break][break]

She tilts her head back, choking temporarily on the grief in her chest, the reminder her name spoken on his lips had brought her.

Emma begins to rise to her feet, admittedly wincing and sucking in air. She's re-bruised old injuries, jostling cracked ribs and potentially reopening cuts. Air hisses through her teeth as she stands, barely masking the pain shes in.[break][break]

Rather than respond to his attempt to be aggravating, to get under her skin, Emma walks past him and toward the Gardevoir. She kneels, inspecting the closest one. One hand clutches her side, fingers digging into her ribs to brace herself.[break][break]

"We're done here."[break][break]

That explains why she knows there is not just one, but two Gardevoir converging on their location. King's Lucario is fast enough to spot the first- and she's sure that the Pokemon is aware of the second, as well.[break][break]

But her unexpected and unwelcome partner's cocky attitude indicates that he hasn't seen it. [break][break]

The woman doesn't hesitate. She advances on King abruptly, it could almost look as though she were about to attack him. But there isn't time to explain, there is only time to kick the man's legs out from under him and slide onto her hip. Her rifle shifts, aimed and fired.[break][break]

She exhales at the resounding thud, and the third Gardevoir falls over, fast asleep.[break][break]

Emma lowers the rifle, exhaling softly as the nose dips below her line of sight. She tilts her head, listening for movement outside of the soft thud.

There is nothing except King's vulgar response. He brushes past her, eyes wild, lips peeled back in a sneer or snarl.

He reminds her of a wild animal.

She scoffs, shaking her head and shouldering her weapon. King takes the lead and she follows the sound of his snickering. The forest grows dense as they move along, but it doesn't take long to find the downed Gardevoir.

"There could be more nearby. Don't let your guard down."

Emma stares at him, bewildered.

"Your ego is massive, holy shit."

She sees the flash of teeth but she turns around on him anyway. Determination driven by her own pride and stubbornness push her to work harder.

The woman he had met in training, with the careful tone and the sly expression was gone. It had been a mask hiding the angry, resentful woman underneath.

Having him here was humiliating. With his eyes watching her every move it felt as though she were being hunted, as if her actions were no longer her own.

She has half a mind to shoot him herself. To leave him paralyzed in the grass until she finished with her assignment.

But she doesn't.

Instead, she raises her gun, loosens her shoulders, and fires into the dark.

Slowly, quietly, the sound of something heavy drops to the ground.

The longer he stayed, the more he talked, the less he did, the more reason she had to believe he wasn't here on someone else's authority.

And maybe he was, but Emma was a skeptical, paranoid woman.

Had he been staring at her ass?

She watches his his eyes crawl back up to her face before looking away. His boredom and lack of interest was grating.
